Are you speking of the passport whit the digital photo? (actually the photo is actually a paper photo that is digitalized and printed as digital photo, not a photo directly taken in digital). This is what is required to enter in U.S. (who has a visa can use a passport without the digital photo. Passport iussed before October 26, 2005 may still have not the digital photo, but if the passpart was renewed after that date, it can not be used without the digital photo).
Biometric passport is a different thing. A passport with a chip inside in which many personal informations (not only hight, colour of eyes, but also a photograph and fingerstamps, etc) will be registered.
/me wondering over US government paranoia /me wondering over French government absolute disability to handle tough issues within decent deadlines, whilst all other european countries manage.
Alas, French is not the only country to have such problem. In Italy the situation is similar or worse. And I belive that in many other countries the situation is similar, and it is surely going worse and worse as summer is approaching.
At least you have not to pay a 40.29 eur stamp every year on the passport (which is lost if you have to change the passoprt because someoneelse choose that you have to change the type of you passport)
(well, I have never undestood why all the countries should change their passport because of the willing of just one country. This is the reason why the other countries are not ready: because they were not the one who choose to have the passports in this way).
I urge anyone neededing a new passport, to request it as soon as possible.

I believe that's what Florence is talking about. The French have finally caught up with the US's conditions.

And yes, it should be big, red and flashy on the Visa information page that people *need* to call the American Embassy closest to them to make sure their passport is OK.

I finally figured all that stuff. My passport if from 2003, so is valid to enter the USA. What is not valid, is my son. I will come with him. He does not have a passport of course. A passport offers only two slots for kids; Then, the children area is covered by plastic and no more kids may be added. So, I thought that to add my son, I had to have a *new* passport. What I did not realise at all, is that biometric passport are per individual. So, the kids can not be added on passports any more, they have their own passport. Consequently, I can keep my old one, but need a biometric one for my son. An invitation letter for a baby is probably not gonna be very convincing, so I do not need that anymore (we'll add a letter to the request to try to explain the urgency).
What I find funny are the identity picture recommandation. The background should be neutral (no hands should be visible). The person head must be a certain size. The person must have eyes looking in the front (not up, not down, not on the sides). The person must not be sagging. Not smiling. Eyes should be open, and mouth closed.
Now, just TRY to do that on a baby who is not yet really able to keep his head straight and sucks two fingers all day long !

:-) You might want to try doing it via photoshop, ie. sit your baby down somewhere and have someone take a photo of him while you keep his head still and hands out of his mouth - make him look at the camera by clicking your fingers, waving a rattle etc. Then you can photoshop yourself out, plus anything in the background, making it neutral. If you don't have photoshop, you could use something like the GIMP <www.gimp.org>. If you can't/don't want to do that yourself, load it onto Commons, and have someone do it for you :-)
We just want you (and your son) to get to Wikimania - we'll do anything* for that to happen :-)

I don't know about in France, but our state department is inclined to reject any photo that shows any evidence of having been altered, digitally or otherwise. And when you think about it, you really can't blame them.

It's true, you would want to be pretty darn confident of your photoshop skills... or of your puppeteering skills

Funny, I didn't get Autin's reply at all..
But, yes, I anticipated this - though I figured we had some photoshop whizzes around (don't know if my abilities are up to this).
Alternatively, Florence, you could try everything else I suggested, but just try to keep yourself out of the photo at the critical moment - tough, yes, but it has been known to have been done :-)

Hmmmm, dangerous to discuss this kind of law-breaking things on a public list ;-)

Agreed. My hubby wanted me to do it on Photoshop. This is what we did for our first son when he got his american passport. He was 7 months old, and after we found ourselves playing rider and horse in an automatic machine (with very little success), we gave up and ended up doing his passport pictures on Photoshop, with a white linen on the floor.
These days are gone. :-(

In this case it is better to use a professional photographer

Very important to notice (to you and and everybody interest). As far I know any children travelling to US (including US citezens) MUST have a personal passport (irregarding of their ages). The inscription in the parent's passport is not vaild.
By the way the photo is required only for children 10 years old or older for the parent's inscription (but this is NOT the case, you NEED a personal passport for your child).
And if you have more than one childre, you NEED a separate personal passport for evry children.
What I find funny are the identity picture recommandation. The background should be neutral (no hands should be visible). The person head must be a certain size. I belive that this is not very important for children (since the software is not so good in elaborating children photos). But I do not know if who recive the photo act in accepting and rejecting the photos with strict control of the rules or if in the case of the children the rules are a little bit relaxed.
Please be very careful, even in the case of the digital passport you have to give them a PAPER photograph, that is scanned and digitally printed!!!!!!!
Of course as somebody else has already said, you can surely not alter any photo!!!
About the letter of invitation, ask for one in your name and atttach it to the rrequest for your children's passport with an explanation letter. (I belive that the should be already used to this).
