Hello everyone
As you prepare to travel to Esino, remember to also have a look at the
program : https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programme
Lots of cool things planned !
I have done an "extraction" of all the discussion/talks/training/events
related to gender gap and summarized them on the Wikimania women facebook.
If you are interested by those topics, before the conference start,

Hello everyone,
For several years I have asked the organizers of Wikimania to formalize
thematic meetups because I think they are essential. This is where we
gather by group of interests, we develop relationships, making friends,
organize projects together, etc.
<great fanfare>
For the first time since the beginning of Wikimanias, thematic meetups are
included in the official schedule. Isn't that wonderful? So we are done
with meetups on the corner of a table, between two sessions and two
sandwiches! We can meet without schedule worries, every morning from 9.00
to 10.00 and every evening from 18.00 to 19.00. The thematic meetups are
held at the primary school of Esino Lario.
If you wish to organize a thematic meetup, there are still some available
spots. If you have questions, special needs, or anything else for your
meetup, please contact me.
For all details, please visit:

Dear Wikimania participants,
Eight weeks ago, around 200 people met in Berlin for the Wikimedia
Conference. You can find the documentation of the conference on Meta.[1]
Our approach for the Wikimedia Conference is to carry the thematic
conversations and conference strands throughout the year instead of
organizing one-shot events. This is why we introduced the role of the
Program and Engagement Coordinator. Wikimania is a perfect place to
follow-up on the process and conversations and we invite all interested
participants – no matter if you attended WMCON or not – to join us for the
“WMCON Follow-Up Day” on Thursday, June 23. At this event, you will find
the opportunity to discuss five different topics. For each topic we will
have around 90 min, which should be sufficient to discuss details and lay
the ground for further steps.
The Follow-Up Day will take place in the “Gym Palace”, the biggest
hall/room in the western part of the village. You can find all the
information in the Wikimania wiki:
https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/WMCON_Follow-Up_Day
For an easier planning and to increase the chances for coordination and
engagement between participants/speakers during preparation, please sign up
there.
I’m really looking forward to seeing you!
Cornelius

I have partial scholarship; I registered online for accommodation and
event ticket, but don't seem to have received any details of where I'm
staying - should I have, at this stage?
(I have checked the website, but an see nothing at:
https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Accommodation
or its linked pages, which answers my question.)

I just sent an email to everyone who registered with an accommodation
package in Esino Lario. Another email with check-in information for
everyone else will be sent soon.
The organizers are reviewing the airport manifests for the shuttle service
from Linate and Malpensa airports to see if they can open up space on the
buses for other attendees who wish to purchase this service. More
information about this will be posted soon.

Hey all,
It seems Milan pride parade will be happening in June 27th [1]. It's
exactly the day after Wikimania and due to the recent events, some people
might want to show their support.
Is it possible to do some coordination and/or guide where should people go,
when is better, etc.

Hi all,
Reading the recent posts on this mailing list and elsewhere, I realised we
never got around to sending you an update on the roundtable
discussions/Discussion Room for the upcoming Wikimania! So let me try to
make that up to you. You can find the final schedule here
<https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Discussions>, and I hope to find
many of you involved in at least one of the discussions!
This year we have scheduled 18 round table discussions on a wide range of
topics. Besides the 18 scheduled 'regular' round table discussions, we will
also organise a number of round table discussions with board members on
themes, to replace the traditional 'Q&A' with the board. Hopefully we can
offer you some more interaction and in-depth conversations this way.
After our calls for suggestions, we got an overwhelming number of
submissions
<https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Discussions/Submissions> with
many good ideas for potential discussions. With a committee of five
experienced Wikimedians, we discussed those submissions, and pronged a bit
with questions - what could the discussion result in, what kind of outcomes
are possible, etc. Based on these proposals, questions and answers we made
selections of what would be the most likely fruitful discussions - along
with criteria like diversity in the schedule. After much discussing, we
ended up with the selection linked above.
I realise many people will feel somewhat disappointed that their topic was
not selected. I would have liked to give every proposer at least a personal
comment on it, but unfortunately due to time constraints we were unable to
follow up sufficiently. Sorry for that.
We still have some details to work out for the discussions, so please bear
with us (facilitators, the details of the session itself).
I'm looking forward to a lot (!) of constructive conversations in the
'Primary School' building in Esino Lario. See you there!
Best,
Lodewijk

The question - which I asked earlier today, but which remains
unanswered - is whether we (full scholarship recipients, partial
scholarship recipients, independent travellers) need to book in
advance for these buses. If so, how?
Likewise for the return journey, on the 27th.

I missed the quoted part of Iolanda's comment, as it was prefixed (on
a separate line) with "Pleonastic", which I misread as being someone's
name.
I have never been presented with a working opportunity to "buy a
ticket for your direct transport from and to the airport", not least
for the reasons Andrew cites.
I have just been told in private email that I may, at an unspecified
time today or tomorrow, "buy a return ticket" for bus transfer, via
Eventbrite.
I do not want a return ticket. I am travelling - as I was advised to
do - from central Milan to Varenna-Esino-Perledo by train. I therefore
need a bus from VEP to EL on the 21st.
We have conflicting information about the need to book the latter in
advance (Where? How?), or on arrival at VEP. There is (as I recently
highlighted) conflicting information about regular scheduled service
and specially-commissioned buses. No guarantee has been given, that
everyone will be able to get a place on the buses
On the 27th, I need a bus from EL to Malpensa airport.
I still do no know whether I can obtain this; what it will cost, or
when I should try to do so: will there be many people competing for
few tickets? Will they go one sale at a time when I am in a meeting,
or asleep?
If I cannot get a bus from EL to Malpensa airport on the 27th, then I
must get a bus from EL to VEP, and train to Milan. The issues noted
above again come into play.
I too, am doing this as a volunteer, and am spending time today, when
I should be doing paid work, to make up for not earning any money
during Wikimania, trying to sort out these issues.
