hi folks,
Its come to my observation that large number of new editors/members
who come in to the kannada wiki go clueless when starting new articles.
(All one has to do in a wiki is to type the URL and then click on 'edit'
to start editing).
But still, to help them out more and to try expand the kannada wiki, I'm
going to start adding some stubs (or short articles) for some articles
that are very much needed on the wiki.
Please feel free to create even the stubs until we can reach some 3:1
ratio for complete articles to stubs. We can try collaborating weekly on
few and try expanding them.
****
Any ideas for next collaboration? Looks like we've come to halt abruptly
on the idea. Any takers for the weekly collaboration if we start one
this week?

"Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties." ~ Erich
Fromm
I am the ODP editor chang, real name Chengappa. I find myself in the
unexpected position of having found what I thought would be a private
email from me, here reproduced in a public forum.
First comments. I've had two emails so far as a result of this thread,
apart from those from Hari Prasad Nadig (HPN). Thanks to the person who
sent a useful and constructive email. To the person who emailed me to
say there were 'vulgar and blatant' errors in the ODP Kannada section,
I've never suggested to anyone that I was competent in Kannada. 4 years
or more ago, I posted a message in soc.culture.indian.karnataka
<news:soc.culture.indian.karnataka> , asking for someone to volunteer to
set this up. That produced one enquiry, and no further active input.
I've also written privately to three strangers who I thought might be
interested, and I've tried to persuade some of my relations in India to
take on the work. None of this has been successful. My knowledge of
Kannada is restricted to a couple of years learning at primary school
level, and I am aware that my competence is minimal. I intended, and
could only hope to provide a basic public ODP category to attract
attention and interest. The results might be vulgar, but there are
better answers than to criticise me for not doing things beyond my ability.
But it is is good that there is active participation now. Hopefully this
will increase, and this category will improve.
Clarifications of some comments in previous posts.
1.
The ODP has no font problem. The Kannada section is all in
unicode, and has always been. The only current font problem is
that on my internet facing machine, and I have had this only
recently (since installing Suse Linux 9.3 ). I can no longer see
any Kannada text. The 'issue' derives from a misunderstanding of
my email, which on reading again, perhaps was not clearly written.
HPN wrote to me suggesting changes of names, and included the
suggestions written in Kannada unicode. All that the message was
intended to say, was that my reply to HPN would include the
Kannada names written in simplified itrans.
2.
the 'kriiDe is ok' comment. The comments were made in response to
HPN's prior email, which he has not posted, and they need to be
seen in context of this. This email of his suggests some name
changes; aaTe to aaTagaLu for instance, and you can see my
agreement or questions on these changes. But it did not suggest
any changes for kale, kriide, vignaanya, and others, and that is
what I was seeking to confirm when I said 'kriide is ok', et.c.
3.
The misreading of praadeeshika as draadeeshika was just that,
literally a misreading. It came about after saving the email from
HPN on another PC. On this machine, with WinXP, Firefox and
Kannada fonts, the underlining of hyperlinks goes through the
middle of the letter, not underneath. I've tried again since with
IE6 and it is better.
4.
The current World category exists under the ODP's root only, as
http://dmoz.org/World., and houses all other language settings.
This displays it in the English section of course, but it is there
to keep the directory structure. There is no need for an
equivalent 'World' category in any language. Cross referencing of
directory categories is available across all languages with 'this
category in other languages' links. Whether the English word
Regional can be adequately translated as Vishwa is something I'm
not well placed to judge.
5.
There is no miscellaneous type category at the root of any
language. In general, the ODP does not use such category anywhere
if it can possibly be helped.
I feel that there may be some other misunderstandings here, but these
may be removed after HPN has had some time to become fully acquainted
with ODP culture and guidelines. Despite the negative publicity the ODP
gets, mainly because of its antagonistic relationship with the SEO
industry, it is a successful, productive and functioning organisation.
Thank you for your other comments, I'll take them on board. I've to go
back to real life now.
Hi folks,
A forward mail needing a bit of attention from all of you.
This is regarding http://dmoz.org/World/Kannada/
Chengappa is a 'catall' editor at ODP - meaning he has edit
previleges to the top level category on /World/Kannada on dmoz. He
mentions that his familiarity of the language is limited, and hence
requested for some help with the kannada words that form the names of
the primary categories of http://dmoz.org/World/Kannada and more
prominantly insists on being "convinced" for the ones I suggested.
There are two issues:
1) Naming - the editor has been informed that "aate" is for games,
"vyapaare" is for business, "praante" for region.
2) Unicode or just English script - wether the category name should be
in kannada unicode or English script (in itrans style).
Please send out your opinions and convincing notes.
==================================
Hi chengappa,
I'm forwarding this mail to the kannada wikipedia list. The
volunteers here volunteer in editing kannada wikipedia (which is an
open content encyclopedia) in their free time. They may help in
convincing you that its ಆಟ (aata) and not ಆಟೆ (aate), ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ
(vyaapaara) and not ವ್ಯಾಪಾರೆ (vyaapaare). If someone has told the
former is true, I'm afraid you've been highly misinformed.
also, its "praanta" not praante. But vishwa sound good 'cos pranta
denotes "region".
Personally I feel its fair enough to use unicode as some or the other
day that needs to be done.

Hi. Regarding the subcats, I'll make some of the changes shortly, but
perhaps not all, because of recent machine problems, I have to copy all
the stuff between machines to work with Kannada fonts. I've some
questions. I'm going to write all these in a simplified Itrans because
of the fonts problem.
aaTe to aaTagaLu - will do, but see below
aaroogya is ok
kompyuTar has already been changed just before you were accepted. That's
the reason for the strange category that appears first in your
request/accept list. Please do not put comments such ' the name of the
category is erroneous' into the category description; this is part of
the public directory. You should raise these in the forums or by email.
kale is ok?
kriiDe is ok (but consider my comments on Recreation, below)
praante to vishwa . See question below.
vignyaana is ok
vyaapaare to vyaapaare - will do
(reference) to ullekhagaLu
samaaja is ok.
suddi is ok.
The reason for aaTe and vyaapaare is that I was told by one person that
all these forms should end in 'e' in this context, rather than 'a'. She
also said the same for samaaja , et.c. though I never changed that.
Presumably she was wrong?
praante is supposed to be Regional. You've provided an alternative
regional, Draadeeshika?
I assume you intend vishwa to be World, yes? But there will be no World
cat, except in the root of Dmoz = English Dmoz, containing all languages
other than English. It's a bad choice of heading in English, would have
made more sense as 'Languages'.
Shopping and Recreation. Consider if these are needed at the top level?
They are present at the top level in English DMOZ only because of its
history and derivation from the old usenet hierarchy. Ideally Shopping
would be a subcat of Business, and Recreation would be combined with
Sports and Games (the distinction between these latter three is quite
artificial in English). Many languages do not have such top level cats
because they confuse the overall ontology (as they do in English).
Kids and Teens - no, not for World/Kannada. The K&T directory is a
separate directory, with its own rules and management system, and it
could have a Kannada subcat there. See
http://dmoz.org/Kids_and_Teens/International/. The alternative which you
probably want here is a Society/Children equivalent. However, if there
were a K&T/International/Kannada cat, that could be @linked into
World/Kannada. See for instance, World/Deutsch which has such a link
called Kinder und Teens.
Thanks, Chang.
