Hi Vladimir
Yikes. I'm glad to know as we are just starting to tag items.
Is there another property that could be substituted instead on Wikidata?
We need a category to constrain the items by a query -- to identify the subject as being part of the Black Lunch Table area of interest, which is Visual artists of the African diaspora.
Any ideas?
It seems wrong to tag items with Black Lunch Table, as that has little meaning across the projects, as far as conveying quickly what the connection is -- at least for the Task list functionality. That was why the categories seemed so logical.

Hi Erica! As I can see at https://tools.wmflabs.org/reasonator/?&q=28654190, you misuse WD prop "topic's main category" to make a list of things related to a category. But that property is intended to be used only once per category: to list its single main item (if any).
You're not alone in such "misuse": I also need it for some projects. However, creating a prop "category" or "useful for" was rejected, see https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal/Archive/30#category. Unfortunately no.

It IS logical to use an existing category for this purpose.
But the WD community has rejected my proposal https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal/Archive/30#category (and the previous one “useful for / interesting to”) because: - categories are a bit messy, since many people use them for various purposes - synchronizing cat-item assignments between WD and Wikipedias would be a major hassle.
They even rejected having such property that is NOT synced with Wikipedias, for project purposes like yours (Black Lunch Table) and mine (Europeana Food and Drink, European Holocaust Research Infrastructure).
WD does have a bunch of over-specific categories, e.g. “people born/died/buried here”. See https://tools.wmflabs.org/sqid/#/browse?activepage=1&type=properties&...
Does anyone think we should reopen the discussion for creating props Category and/or InterestingTo?
