Hello everyone!
We are organizing an event for Research and Wikimedia to exchange about
research done in the field and for researchers and Wikimedia community
members to work together on new ideas. The idea derived from the fact that
many researchers reusing Wikipedia, Wikidata and their sister projects
often are not yet integrated with the community. This makes their work a
lot more difficult than necessary. At the same time, many research projects
are useful for the community, but not yet integrated into Wikipedia and co.
We want to change this and facilitate the exchange between researchers and
Wikimedia community members in an event, where we bring people interested
in similar topics together. If you are either doing research in the
Wikipedia space or are a community member of one of the Wikimedia projects,
please come by on the 8th of February. More details below.
Please spread the event invitation in your communities!
Best,
Lucie

*Description*
We are organizing an event for Wikimedians and researchers to exchange!
Come along and learn more about research happening around Wikimedia and
what Wikimedians can teach you about the different Wikimedia projects!
A large part of the computer science research community is exploring
Wikipedia, Wikidata and their sister projects. In the fields of natural
language processing (NLP) as well as semantic web, Wikipedia and Wikidata
are often used as a fundamental part of the research world. At the same
time, the community of Wikidata and Wikipedia could make use of a variety
of tools developed by researchers. However, currently, the gap between
things explored in research and actual applications in Wikidata and
Wikipedia needs bridging. Therefore, we want to build a community of
Wikidata community members and research to exchange needs, existing tools,
open challenges and research question to foster an environment, where both
communities can benefit from the exchange.
The ideal is to have all the different approaches and commonalities under
one umbrella to foster exchange and support of different research
communities and their approaches.
OpenSym and the WikiWorkshop are already doing that for the people
submitting to and attending computer science research conferences. But
without the exchange with the community, there is a lack of communication,
creating silos of missing exchange.
*The Goal is*
to connect the researcher and the Wikimedia community to enable an exchange
that could ultimately lead to the research projects being implemented as
tools for Wikipedia. And vice-versa: More research projects build on
community needs.
*We invite*
*Researchers*
Anyone who does or is planning to do research on or around Wikimedia
projects, such as Wikipedia, Wikidata and others.
*Wikimedians*
Anyone in the community, who is interested in improving the research
happening around Wikimedia - you don’t need any experience in research.
Wikipedia editor, Wikidata data magician, whatever you do in Wikimedia
projects, your feedback will be highly valuable.
*What we need from you*
We would ask all researchers to bring an A2/A3 poster about what they are
doing in Wikimedia that we can put up so that we can create an easy way to
exchange on different projects. If you don’t have a project yet, don’t
worry- just bring a poster with topics you find interesting, and you might
be able to meet other researchers already working in your field of
interest. (If you struggle with printing the poster beforehand, please
reach out to us a few days in advance.)
*Event*
We will spend a day exchanging on recent challenges around Wikimedia.
Besides the posters, we aim to form working groups for the afternoon to
work on topics of shared interest and possibly propose a project of common
interest.

Hello Folks!
For the Python enthusiasts on these lists, I’m signal boosting this message
with info on PyCon dev sprints and financial assistance for the conference
from a former Wikimedia colleague.
I plan to attend PyCon this year and am also hoping to figure out setting
up a development sprint around some Wikimedia Cloud Services and Toolforge
code.

I wanted to mention - feel free to pass this on publicly and in personal
invitations - that PyCon North America, mid-April in Pennsylvania,
offers financial assistance to people who would like to attend:
https://us.pycon.org/2020/financial-assistance/ <
https://us.pycon.org/2020/financial-assistance/>
The deadline for requesting financial assistance is 31 January.
PyCon loves to cross-pollinate with other free and open source
movements, and I know there are many Python developers in Wikimedia
tech. If Wikimedians want to use the April 20-23 in-person sprints
https://us.pycon.org/2020/events/sprints/ <
https://us.pycon.org/2020/events/sprints/> (will be editable soon)
to work on Wikimedia-related Python tools together, that would be cool!
Best wishes.

Hello all,
As you may know, every year around October 29th we celebrate the launch of
Wikidata together. In 2017 and 2019 we organized a Wikidata conference in
Berlin, and in 2020 just like in 2018, we encourage local Wikidata
communities to organize events in their area
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Eighth_Birthday>.
Although October 2020 seems to be very far in the future, now is a good
time to start thinking about it, especially if you need funding.
*➡️ What kind of event can you organize?*
The main goals of the Wikidata Birthday 2020 are:
- *share knowledge* among your local community: encourage people to
share what they know about Wikidata and its related tools
- *onboard new people*: introduce new people to Wikidata
- *celebrate the achievements* of the Wikidata community
Examples of events:
- Meetup in your town with your local community
- Kick-off a Wikidata section in your user group
- An introduction to Wikidata for beginners, a training about Wikidata
tools...
- Hackathon, edit-a-thon, transl-a-thon...
- Give an introduction to Wikidata to a local partner (university,
library...)
- Wikibase workshop or install-party
- *Online events* are also welcome: editing contest, challenge,
livestream...
*➡️ What do you need to start an event?*
It doesn't have to be a big thing like a conference. I encourage you to not
start on your own: try to find other people in your area who could be
interested: other Wikidatians, but also Wikipedians, your local open
source/hacker/open data community...
Together, you can start thinking about the following things: what do you
want to organize, for what target audience, to achieve what goal?
*➡️ How to connect with other event organizers?*
The other events organizers will be your main source of support and
inspiration. If you want to get in touch or ask questions, don't hesitate
to:
- write on this talk page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:Eighth_Birthday>
- join the Telegram group <https://t.me/joinchat/HGjGexK8LA2wJZEk1x1p_A>
dedicated to Wikidata events
- join the regular call for organizers (next one on January 29th, more
information here <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Eighth_Birthday>
)
*➡️ How to get funding or Wikidata swag?*
You will find a summary of the information on this page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Eighth_Birthday/Funding>. Here are
the main points to consider:
- In order to get any kind of funding or swag, you will need to present
a detailed project of your event (what are your goals, how many people do
you expect, main logistics details, etc.)
- If you want to apply for an event grant at WMF (requesting more than
$2000), the deadline is February 2nd!
- If you want to apply for a rapid grant at WMF (between $500 and
$2000), the deadline to apply is July 15th
- Wikimedia Deutschland cannot fund events taking place outside of
Germany. However we can provide a reasonable amount of swag. Because
sending packages is complex in various countries, we will try to dispatch
most of the swag during the Wikimedia Summit in April.
If you have questions, feel free to contact me or to write on this talk page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:Eighth_Birthday>.
In 2018, almost 40 events have been organized
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Sixth_Birthday> for the Wikidata
birthday around the world - I'm super excited to see what can happen this
year!
Cheers,

On FactGrid we have matched all our items with the respective Wikidata Q-numbers (wherever possible). Does anybody know what SPARQL query I should use to get these numbers?
This is a geographical entity on our wikibase with the Wikidata number at the appropriate place
https://database.factgrid.de/wiki/Item:Q89076
and this is the SPARQL-query to all geographical places which I would love to get with the respective Wikidata numbers

Hello Everyone,
My name is Gabriel, I'm a Ph.D. student who's trying to research the
relevance/quality of internal references in Wikidata (non-external URLs).
My first objective is to locate these references, and for that I wanted to
ask you all for help.
Here <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Sources>, it is mentioned that
sources come normally either if the 'reference URL' property (I assume for
external references) or the 'stated in' property (I assume for internal
references).
So, my question is, apart from the 'stated in' property, what other
properties are used for internal references?
My goal is to parse these references, match them with their claims and see,
for each claim-reference pair, how relevant is the reference.
Thank you!
Kind regards,
