Hi all,
I was collecting geodata from Wikidata and showing them into a map they
look quite weird... So I look at them more intensely and coords seem
inverted.
Try with a simple query like: http://tinyurl.com/ht9ffj3
And check the coords on a item and on its result in the third column. The
third column have Point(lon, lat), isn't it?

Hi folks,
I'm working on a project to document (with the help of Wikidata of course!)
different kinds of "digital tools" from a user experience point of view.
You have all kinds of digital tools: smartphone app, Windows program,
website, Software as a Service, software you have to install yourself on a
server, with a Docker image, etc.
What I want is a universal property to differentiate the experience offered
by these tools and in particular to be able to say if they are easy to
install/launch/open. Basically I want to answer the question "what do I
need to use that tool"?
The platform property [1] is not really satisfactory, first of because it
is limited to the concept of computing platform [2] which in theory does
not allow the use of "world wide web" as a value for example. And saying a
software is "web" does not allow to differentiate between a website — such
as OpenStreetMap — and a software you have to install on a server — such as
Discourse.
I thought of adding a "self-hosting" property to describe the possibility
of hosting the tool on your own server but it seems too narrow. I have
found nothing similar on Wikidata (the Wikipedia article itself is very
poor [3]).
A discussion as part of the Informatics/Software WikiProject [4] has given
me the idea for a one-size-fits-all solution: adding a "requires" property,
which in the context of a software could be used to say "X software
requires Y operating system", "X software requires Z hardware" or even "X
software requires an installation".
The "depends on software" property exists [5] but is obviously still too
limited. The "requires" property could also be used outside of the software
context, similarly to the "uses" property [6]
What do you think?

Hello All
Together with a group of researchers of the University of Southampton, we would like to set a data quality framework for Wikidata.
Such a framework would allow to understand what the main quality issues underlying Wikidata are, what Wikidata can be used for, and what it ultimately aims at.
In addition, it could be successively used for a large scale evaluation of Wikidata.
I have spent the last three weeks at Wikimedia Germany, where I benefitted of the help and of the advice of the Wikimedia developers to draw up a draft of this quality framework, which has been already published as a Request for Comment and advertised on the Project Chat page.
In order to obtain the largest possible contribution from the community, I would like to give notice of our research also on this mailing list.
You can add your comment here https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Requests_for_comment/Data_quality_fr…, any contribution would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Alessandro

I am about to propose much more widespread use of Property:P2888 "exact
match" for linking from a wikidata item to a URI that should resolve to
linked data about the same concept from another semantic web resource.
(amongst the biomedical items that our team works with)
Is there any other pattern that the community here is using to do this that
we should be following?
thanks
Ben
I've been playing with Wikipedia (to extract list of links), Wikidata (to
enrich), Wikipedia pagecounts (to estimate fame) and BigQuery (to mix
everything) to visualize the parties conventions.
Sharing here as you might like the techniques and results:

Hi,
It seems that some changes have been made to the JSON serialization
recently:
https://github.com/Wikidata/Wikidata-Toolkit/issues/237
Could somebody from the dev team please comment on this? Is this going
to be in the dumps as well or just in the API? Are further changes
coming up? Are we ever going to get email notifications of API changes
implemented by the team rather than having to fix the damage after they
happened?

Hello all,
repeated discussions about what constitutes a breaking change has prompted us,
the Wikidata development team, to draft a policy on interface stability. The
policy is intended to clearly define what kind of change will be announced when
and where.
A draft of the policy can be found at
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Stable_Interface_Policy>
Please comment on the talk page.
Note that this policy is not about the content of the Wikidata site, it's a
commitment by the development team regarding the behavior of the software
running on wikidata.org. It is intended as a reference for bot authors, data
consumers, and other users of our APIs.
We plan to announce this as the development team's official policy on Monday,
August 22.

Have you ever wanted to join the Wikidata development team? Maybe this
needs your attention ;)
Wikimedia Deutschland is looking for a PHP Software Developer to work on
programming and maintaining backend functionality of Wikidata and other
services. He/she will be responsible for devising, implementing and testing
new features in line with the product plan.
You can find all the information here
<https://wikimedia.de/wiki/PHP_Software_Developer>. Don't hesitate to
spread the word if you know someone who could be interested!
