Hi folks,
I do lots of edits related to artworks. Many artworks (and, I assume, many other things) are dated in the following ways:
1. 'between 1850 and 1899’ - on Wikidata that could be ’18. century’ (yep, needs to be written like that) with qualifiers start date and end date ?
2. ‘between 1784 and 1787’ - on Wikidata ‘1780s’ with qualifiers?
3. ‘between 1878 and 1904 - on Wikidata... eeeehm?
I was wondering: can’t we express this without needing any qualifiers at all?
We can enter units as ‘320 cm plus/minus 7 cm’, right?
Might we also be able to say ‘1898 plus/minus six years’?
I can imagine we’d then also have an interface that helps you enter a ‘between date x and date y’ elegantly without needing to do any math.
Or would that not be possible?
I think it would be great to have, as it would make our dating conceptually much more accurate IMO.
Curious what others think.
Best, Sandra (User:Spinster)
p.s. On Commons we have an {{Other date}} template that’s used very frequently, that allows rich time/date expressions, and that I really love. Here’s the documentation: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Other_date <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Other_date>
Besides this ‘between’ concept, it also has, among other things
* before (date) or after (date) - also very common!
* seasons - you can say ‘Spring 1986’
* first/last half/quarter (year, decade, century) etc
Some might not be translatable to a period as I suggested above, but some may.

In February, I'm undertaking a three-week tour of Australia, giving
talks about Wikidata, and Wikipedia's GLAM collaborations. There will
also be social meetups. I'll be visiting Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra
and Perth.
If you can, do join us, and please share this draft itinerary (more to
be added!):

with your Australian Wikimedia, OpenData, GLAM or OpenStreetMap
contacts, and invite them to come along.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Connected Open Heritage project started
To: wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hi all, (cross posting on purpose, no excuses)
Great news for everyone interested in cultural heritage.
Wikimedia Sverige, along with partners UNESCO, Wikimedia Italia and
Cultural Heritage without Borders, has received a $300,000 grant from
Kulturstiftelsen (the Swedish postcode lottery) to work on a project
called Connected
Open Heritage.[1]
The project lasts until July 2017, and during that time we will work on:
-
Migrating the information in the WLM database to Wikidata
-
Updating and adding new data about monuments, including from ten
countries where cultural heritage is at risk
-
Uploading tens of thousands of images and media files from cultural
heritage institutions
-
Increasing awareness about what the Wikimedia movement is doing in the
cultural heritage field, both to the Wikimedia communities, general public
and also to experts in the field
-
Promoting open data and free licenses
-
Organizing a photo exhibition with images of cultural heritage in at
least three countries.
All info on the project, including who to contact if you want to get
involved, timeplan, activities and such are available on Meta. The talk
page on Meta is open for comments and questions, and all input on this is
welcome.

The Wikimedia Foundation has started a consultation about strategic
priorities.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2016_Strategy
There is a survey with one question and several possibilities for each of
the main themes: Reach, Community, Knowledge. It is a good chance to
influence the WMF strategy with your individual voice. I really mean it!
Taking the survey took me about 15 minutes and I found the exercise
interesting.
This survey is being promoted across all Wikimedia projects. I'm forwarding
the announcement to this list in order to help assuring that our technical
communities are well represented. Please take the survey, and feel free
forwarding this message to whoever might be interested as well.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Launch of Community Consultation on strategic
approaches
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Wikimedians,
We are excited to have you participate in an important Community Engagement
regarding our strategic approaches. This is a major step to help us
prioritize the work of the Foundation beginning in July 2016 and running
for the next 12 to 24 months thereafter into a strategic plan.
Throughout 2015 the Foundation has been exploring how to prioritize its
work to best support the movement's goals, set forth, but not yet reached,
in the 2010-15 strategic plan.
The strategic approaches presented here are based on our vision, strategy
consultations in 2010 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/2010-2015>
and 2015
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2015_Strategy/Community_consultation>,
research on external impacts, and input from staff and a few small
community think groups on key challenges and potential solutions.
Timeline: These are our target dates for this process.
-
January 11: Put up pages for translation (done)
-
January 18: Launch of community consultation on key questions
-
February 15: Close of consultation
-
By February 26: Release synthesis of consultation
-
By March 4: Publish first draft strategy for comment
We appreciate your time and efforts to help guide the Foundation in its
work to support the movement.
Warm regards,
Lila

Thanks Magnus for the pointers, the mix'n'match data are like jewels for
StrepHit.
Does the database you mentioned also contain the **body** of the
catalogs items, i.e., the raw text of biographies?
If so, I can avoid scraping all those sources, and it would be just perfect.
As a side note, I'm currently outreaching GLAM people to ask for more
biographical sources: links are coming, and I'll definitely import them
into mix'n'match as well.
I was aware of the Sourcerer tool: I'm concerned with those references
coming from Wikipedia articles though, since they stem from inside a
Wikimedia project, and I want to make sure that everything comes from
the outside.
I'm open for discussion with the community about this.
What do you think?
Cheers,
Marco

Hey folks :)
I'll be doing another office hour to talk about all things Wikidata.
As usual I'll give an overview of the past 3 months and what's ahead.
It'll be in #wikimedia-office on Freenode. It'll be on January 21st at
17:00 UTC. For your timezone please see

Fellow Wikidata enthusiasts,
Just a note the I've released an update to WikiBrowser, and renamed it
to ConceptMap as it now creates dynamic concept maps. ConceptMap is a
web application that leverages the structure of Wikidata to semantically
navigate Wikipedia articles and dynamically create directed graphs
composed of items that you select. ConceptMap is being developed in
Java, using technologies such as Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Data,
Neo4j, D3 and Cloud Foundry. This web application is live at
http://ConceptMap.io and the code is open source and located in my
GitHub repository. Here's the announcement on my blog post, which
contains a link to a brief demo video, included here for your
convenience:

Please let me know if you have any feedback, including desired features
for future releases.

As part of my Bachelor’s thesis I worked on an extension called
“ArticlePlaceholder”
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ArticlePlaceholder over the last
months.
One of the biggest barriers for accessing the knowledge Wikipedia provides
is language.
There are many topics that are only covered in few, big Wikipedias. People
who don’t speak any of these languages don’t have access to all the
information available potentially vital to them.
The Article Placeholder extensions aims at smaller Wikipedias to support
them in increasing access to data available on Wikidata. Article
Placeholders are automatically generated content pages in Wikipedia or
other mediawiki projects displaying data from Wikidata. They are clearly
not actual articles but an overview of data on a topic which does not have
an article yet. The design of the page and its content is under the control
of the local community via Lua and templates but we will provide defaults
so smaller Wikipedias can work with them without having to worry about the
technical side of it.
I have a test setup on Labs with an example for Ada Lovelace
http://articleplaceholder.wmflabs.org/mediawiki/index.php/Special:AboutTopi…
The reader can find these pages by searching for a topic and gets results
if there is an Item on Wikidata with the respective label and/or alias.
The reader would benefit a lot since even if there is no article on a topic
yet, they will still have basic information provided in their language. But
it also might increase the numbers of editors due to increased usefulness
of that Wikipedia.
We are now looking for the first Wikipedias to support the extension by
deploying it and giving their input. I am still developing the extension
and the first Wikipedias to try it will naturally have a larger say in how
it evolves.
If your Wikipedia would like to give it a try please let me know. We would
start it as a beta feature.
Thank you,
Lucie (Frimelle)

Hi everyone,
The mix'n'match tool [1] provides a list of catalogues from different
sources with lots of biographical data.
The list seems like a great starting point for the selection of reliable
sources that would feed the StrepHit pipeline [2].
I was wondering 2 things:
1. Is it possible to directly access those datasets?
2. Who are the contributors that maintain the list?
If you are involved into this effort, please get in touch with me.
Cheers,
Marco
