Hello,
I support the XAPI instance on one of the new servers. With the standard
output format it is really useful for other tools to get only a subset
of the huge osm-data mountain.
It has also load balancing for more than one servers and runs stable for
a long time. The query interface is simple and good.
So I see it more on the productive database server where we also have
more hard disks with space and performance, which we perhaps don't need
at beginning.
Would this be OK?
The Xapi on wikimedia servers would speed up my query-to-map tool
really, so I have perhaps no neutral point of view, but I thing it would
be also a good way to give
OSM fast something back if Wikimedia profits from the osm-maps. If we
get later a really high load level on the database server we can talk
about it again.
We would have with Xapi a good base to upgrade it later perhaps to a
more common system in the backround like PostGIS or to a more directly
output on a maps-layer or something like this.
So the Xapi could be perhaps better but in the moment we have nothing
that is similar or better.
Greetings Kolossos

The Direct Broadcast capability of the NASA Terra and Aqua spacecraft provide new remote sensing capabilities for the observation of planet Earth. Both of these platforms have a direct broadcast X-band downlink that allows MODIS (Terra and Aqua) and AIRS/AMSU/HSB and AMSR-E (Aqua) data to be received in real time by sites having the proper reception hardware.
I trust this information is sufficient for your purposes, in case you require any additional details, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely,

I'm nagging some previous colleges about SAR-interferometry and
stereo-SAR. Perhaps it turns out we can use something they have
implemented, I don't know. I guess you all knows about the SRTM-data.

Hi all
I'm pleased to tell you that the servers have been deliverd and installed into
the racks. They are awaiting some more setup which should be finished in a week
or two.
My question to you is: what shall we call them? Our naming sheme revolves mostly
about plants, often poisenous ones. The names used for the current Toolserver
boxes can be seen at <https://wiki.toolserver.org/view/Servers>, names used by
the foundation can be seen at <http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/Server_roles>.
There's the OSM toolserver, the DB server and the tile cache to be named. We
need suggestions BY FRIDAY. Note that the ultimate decision about the name will
be made by the server admins, based on nothing but their vim :)
So... let us know your suggestions!

Dear Wikipedians,
During the OpenStreetMap Users Day 2009 in the Netherlands Hay Kranen from
Wikipedia mentioned something about geocoding, so Niels Leenheer acted
upon that, and mashed up Wikipedia and OSM.
See below. He wants to see if it is possible to drag the markers and that
the geocode of the wikilemma would be updated. But his knowledge of
OpenLayers is not that good enough.

Groeten,
Niels Leenheer

Hi all
I'm happy to inform you that the new servers arrived in amsterdam. So we will
soon have an extra toolserver for OpenStreetMap stuff, as well as the two
production map servers - and a bunch of other shiny new stuff for the toolserver.
It will be a while until all is installed and set up. Full functionality is
expected to be available after the next regular maintenance window, july 6th.
Some parts may become available earlier, but we are out of room in our rack, so
we can't set up everything before the new rack is ready.
We'll keep you posted

Saw this on the Italian Wikipedia list (from Frieda), might find it
interesting and relevant. Rough translation (a cleaned up version of
the google translation ;-) ):
"In Trento, the headquarters of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler, the
OSMit 2009 conference <http://www.osmit.fbk.eu> will be held between
June 5 and 6. It is the first conference of the Italian Open Street
Map.
I will point out for two reasons:
1. OSM will be "integrated" into MediaWiki, and therefore the maps
will be usable on Wikipedia
2. Wikimedia Italia is sponsoring the conference"
Has anyone heard anything about this, reached out to them, or
considered going if they're nearby? :-)

Hi all
Just a quick update on the order for the three servers to be used for OSM
things: the order is out, but servers won't arrive before May 25th. And it's
possible that there will be another week of delay, or even two. I will let you
know when I have more details. Please be patient for a little longer.
Regards,
Daniel

Hi Lodewijk
I have no idea, but I'll forward your message to the OSM integration list.
Maps-l folks: please CC Lodewijk in any responses, as he's not on the list.

Hi Daniel,
do you happen to know whether any Dutch people are involved in some way
in the OSM integration in MediaWiki? Someone who's doing Geo Freedom Day
in NL would like someone to give a talk about the integration, so that
person might be helpful :) (or maybe someone living near the border from
Germany?)
Thanks for your help,
Lodewijk
