There are occasional community discussions about how to preserve Wikipedia (and hopefully the sister projects) for a very long time even if there are any of several kinds of global disasters. This archival technology might be of interest: http://phys.org/news/2016-02-eternal-5d-storage-history-humankind.html Quoting from the article: "As a very stable and safe form of portable memory, the technology could be highly useful for organisations with big archives, such as national archives, museums and libraries, to preserve their information and records." [x-posted announcement] Hello, The next online office hour session of the Wikimedia Language team is scheduled for next Wednesday, September 21st, 2016 at 13:00 UTC. This session is going to be an online discussion over Google Hangouts/Youtube with a simultaneous IRC conversation. Default maximum "Public Domain year" for digitizations

Hi, I could do with some quick views to advise a UK GLAM institution as to how to make part of their digital archives of images "No copyright known", based on the date of creation of works (a proportion may have year of publication instead). To make this an easy step for the GLAM, there needs to be some evidence of why any date chosen is no risk, or extremely low risk, so that a case could be made to the institution's management; and lawyers. I'm aware that Google Books ran into a lot of lawsuits for releasing book scans a bit too liberally, while at the British Library there was a very conservative date of 1874 (I think) where everything before than could be considered public domain as a default. The tricky part is to choose a generic date that can apply regardless of the nature of the item digitized, or its country of creation/publication. Immoveable heritage = real estate?

I'll suggest to Nemo and Axel that "Immovable cultural heritage" refers to "real property" or "real estate", i.e. land and buildings. If so, this might be handled well via Wiki Loves Monuments. I do know of one GLAM who has such a collection. The Philadelphia Art Museum owns about a dozen historical buildings in Philadelphia and about half of them are open to the public. Most of them are in Fairmount Park and funding to maintain the buildings might go through either institution, or even the city of Philadelphia itself. Hi Leigh, While I don't have research, anecdotally I can say that staff turnover and competing priorities seem to be limiting factors for GLAM+STEM programs in Cascadia. Our GLAMs seem to be low priorities for financial support from government agencies, so GLAMs rely on donations (the priorities of donors can shift from year to year) and ticket revenue. My reading of their budgets suggests that none of their revenue sources are well aligned with assigning staff time to Wikimedia GLAM workflows. So if we want Wikimedia GLAM to happen here in Cascadia, we may need to find a way to fund our own Wikimedia outreach or GLAM person. I had hoped that the University of Washington Libraries would be willing to train one of their existing staff in Wikimedia GLAM workflows, but so far that hasn't happened. I suspect that the disconnect between their budget priorities and Wikimedia is again the main reason why not. Pine

One thing we still need some help with is to get in touch with GLAMs who has digitized collections of photos, videos, paintings or drawings, or possibly scanned books (such as travel diaries) of immovable heritage sites[2] that could be relevant to the project.
