Any thoughts on having a gender gap or women's outreach IRC channel?
I think it'd be nice to have an open hang out for those interested (of any gender) to participate in not only conversation, but, have live action dialogue about articles of concern and so forth.
Or is that opening a can of worms that shouldn't be opened?
I like the idea, but, if it'd be just me sitting in a room by myself...that'd be no fun!

Well, it is an excellent opportunity to talk without thinking and get into trouble, but as I seldom bother with IRC, I would generally be a no-show. I would go ahead, but unless a regular crew of women shows up it will be a bust.
I think we have to get over the idea that bringing up some issue is canvassing. It would be if there was an enforceable demand that each of us take a particular action, but as experience shows, social pressure does not get you far on Wikipedia.

Again, the point is to encourage dialogue and partnership with all genders. I'm quite impressed with how diverse IRC actually is. And if you're not participating, then you need not worry ;) It's also another tool for female editors to utilize, and once you show people how to use IRC (I hadn't used it in over 10 years, until yesterday, and all I needed was a little guidance), it's just another place for people to have community.
I just think it'd be cool to have a place called home for those of us interested. Just like we have this mailing list (which seems rather male dominated, too!). :)

Rather than just set up a channel and hope that people show up, why don't we try a weekly IRC meeting at a specific day and time. I guess #wikimedia-gendergap would be the logical channel name (unless someone has another idea). Any suggestion for a day and time? Should we log the discussion to post elsewhere or keep it "off-the-record"?

We already have #wikimedia-office for this type of stuff; we could just use that.
I think that Ryan has the right of it here. We can have topical meetings for a while, and if there is clear and sufficient interest, a channel could be created.

I think that's a good idea. It's just deciding when...and topics? and what we seek to achieve in these "meetings", unless that's not a necessity.....? The whole IRC meeting concept is rather new to me, so I'm not sure how organized/micromanaged it needs to be.

It doesn't need to be micro-managed, but it does help to have a moderator to kick off the meeting, say when to wrap things up, keep track of questions, and try to make sure people don't get drowned in a wall of text (though some side conversation is inevitable and okay). If you want to talk about this further Sarah, myself or Philippe have both run WMF office hours in #wikimedia-office and would be happy to give you more of a primer.
I'd be on board for a gendergap channel. I'm nearly always on IRC, and I've love the opportunity to coach new women or just chat with old gendergap types of both sexes. Office hours-style meetings are less attractive to me, as they're nearly always chaotic enough to be almost useless.

That was one theory behind my original intention (that I failed to mention). Provide a hang out spot (which I did mention) and not just limit ourselves to an occasional 1 hour office spot. I'm happy to see a gender-related office hour event take place (I hope it does happen as the strategic plan goodness proceeds), but my only fear is that it will limit peoples participation who might want to have a little corner of the IRC world to call our own on a regular basis.
Why not both? :) I did have a few other folks +1 this idea via IRC!
#wikimedia-gendergap
(and Steven I'll still take you up on some IRC coaching for my n00bness)

The assumption should always be that a new venue or opportunity for participation will be appreciated and used. Often enough that is the case.
