I think most people here will remember the appalling harassment Anita
Sarkeesian suffered in YouTube and on Wikipedia.
If not, see
http://www.feministfrequency.com/2012/06/harassment-misogyny-and-silencing-…http://www.feministfrequency.com/2012/06/harassment-and-misogyny-via-wikipe…
So now we have another ANI thread on her biography
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incide…
The discussion is whether a chap who made the following comment (among many
others) should be topic-banned from her biography:
---o0o---
Now she has over 4 million views, which is a huge leap (relatively),
despite not publishing any new videos since then - these 3 million new
views, and a big fame (especially among gamers), and the notability (also
on Wikipedia), and the money (from donations), all of it was only due to
the massive trolling response to her trailer video for a Kickstarter
project, which she then *media-savy way used to start a huge moral panic (a
smooth move, I'll admit) instead of just ignoring it, or do things like [
http://www.destructoid.com/bioware-writer-s-vagina-versus-the-internet-2222…
literally using her vagina,
* which is what Hepler did], and so this is what she is "best known for"
(note: best).
---o0o---
That guy is the most frequent editor of her biography's talk page, having
made over three times more edits to it than the next editor.
http://toolserver.org/~daniel/WikiSense/Contributors.php?wikilang=en&wikifa…
The ANI discussion has been running for a week.

Subject: [FC-discuss] Announcing the Empowermentors Collective: a group
for women of color and queer people of color
To: discuss(a)freeculture.org
_This has been cross-posted at the Free Software Foundation blog
[here][1]._
The [Empowermentors Collective][2] is a new space by and for women of
color and queer people of color within free software and free culture.
We recognize the need to address deep-seated cultural norms within the
free software and free culture communities which, under the guise of
openness, have excused and perpetuated alienating behavior. It is
imperative that we acknowledge that there are systemic structures of
control embedded in our society which permeate our movement. Refusing to
do so in an effort to compartmentalize and focus on our own goals is
detrimental to our success. We cannot afford to be an inward-facing
movement.
To expose and undo this culture of exclusion, we would like to support
the recently established Empowermentors Collective, a community for
intersectionally marginalized identities. This type of intentional space
also opens up the potential for much needed coalition building and
advances our own understanding of how technology and media are
inseparable from our experiences and ourselves, our bodies.
As [the description][3] reads:
> The Empowermentors Collective is a skillshare, activism, and
discussion network by and for women of color and queer people of color.
We are a group of community members with a strong commitment to
furthering free software and free culture through an intersectionally
marginalized lens and making a more welcoming space out of these
communities. We therefore necessarily also work against and do not
tolerate oppression in all its forms: ableism, racism, cissexism,
heterosexism, sexism, classism, etc.
>
> The Empowermentors Collective strives to be an affirming and safer
space for people with disabilities, people of color, women, and people
self-identified as queer or LGBT.
>
> We are called Empowermentors because we focus on education and
encourage participants to host workshops and skillshares geared towards
intersectionally marginalized identities.
>
> * We maintain a safer space for marginalized identity groups.
> * We address issues of oppression within the free software and free
culture communities.
> * We equip each other with skills and knowledge of free software and
free culture.
> * We file, catalog, and help solve bugs related to race, gender, and
accessibility in free software projects.
> * We take on mentorship positions and run targeted workshops,
classes, and skillshares.
Students for Free Culture and the Free Software Foundation are proud to
support this effort to identify, expose, and confront crucial issues
within our communities; to bridge our movement with our contemporaries
in the critical intersectional analysis of oppression, hierarchy, and
domination; and to develop our own philosophy at the cutting-edge of
feminist, queer, critical race, and cyborg theory.
If you are a woman of color or queer person of color in the free
software or free culture community and are interested in being a part of
the Empowermentors Collective, please [join the mailing list][4] and the
#empowermentors IRC channel on freenode. If you are an ally to these
issues, please help spread the word!

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share my report about the WikiWomen's Collaborative with
you. It's a project I developed as a way to engage and build community
around experienced and potential women editors and contributors to
Wikimedia projects. My fellowship ends this week, and I'll be writing a
blog about my experience. But, please do know: I am so grateful to
everyone who has been involved in the past year. Just knowing I had a
community of people to come to really means a lot - it's been an
emotional and remarkable experience. I'll be writing a more formal blog
about the past year, soon.
--
Here are my report:
* http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:WikiWomen%27s_Collaborative/Final_r…
The highlight for me is seeing that women involved in the Collaborative
started editing more than ever in September - the same time when the
project launched.
You can also find the main page for my fellowship here:
* http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Fellowships/Fellows/Sarah_Stierch
I hope you'll join us in the project and get involved:

I am moving back to volunteer status in regards to my gender gap work. I
am still doing public speaking, presentations and all the stuff that
goes with spreading word about the importance of women's involvement.
But, please do remember: I'm a volunteer again and have three jobs :)
If you're curious as to what I'm up to right now:
-I'm serving as US OpenGLAM Coordinator for the Open Knowledge Foundation
-I'm doing a Wikipedian in Residency at the World Digital Library
-I also run my own consulting firm where I work with public and private
clients around the world doing museum curatorial work, marketing,
lecturing, blahblahblah.
I'm also hoping I can do some more projects with Wikimedia, so we'll see!!
Thank you again for all of the support this list has given me. I am
indebted.
In wikilove,
Sarah

Can you believe Wikipedia Community Fellow and first Smithsonian

It's only my second article creation, and I could use some help
expanding it from a stub if you have some time to contribute!
Thanks for all your hard work, Sarah,

A lady down under has started her own "Wikipedia about New Zealand".
http://www.hawkesbay.co.nz/general-stories-page:/52063-a-new-wikipedia-abou…
---o0o---
Wiki web to satisfy Kiwi curiosity
If knowledge is power then Lillian Grace's new website - WikiNewZealand.org
- will put power in the hands of ordinary Kiwis.
The concept - which is supported by crowd funding - was seeded a year ago
when the former New Zealand Institute research associate and physical
education teacher sat down under a Hawke's Bay tree to think out her next
hobby. She came up with a Kiwi version of Wikipedia.
Grace hopes her not-for-profit hub of information - mostly data and
statistics represented as graphs and infographics - will, like the globally
recognised online encyclopedia, become a universal resource for students,
business people, politicians and ordinary citizens alike.
The data on Wiki New Zealand won't be coloured by ideological viewpoints,
or undergo endless revisions, as occurs on Wikipedia; its main aim is to be
an unfettered source of information for rational debate, whether it is used
to settle a bar bet or to inform a submission to a select committee.

Hi everyone,
Tonight I'm hosting a #wikiparty at my house, inspired by Siko's recent
blog post[1]. A few of us decided to use the hashtag #wikiparty in
regards to the event, and similar events we do in the future.
So....whether you're partying with friends...or editing alone (with your
favorite beverage of choice!) come join us on Twitter tonight (around 6
PM PST).
And if you do have your own gatherings, let's try to make the fun of a
Wikipedia party go viral - #wikiparty!!! :)
(Or whatever you prefer in your own language!)
Talk to you on Twitter tonight :)

I have read this list with great care. I am a senior faculty member in what
used to be a library school but is now an iSchool. Most of our new hires
have been men who try very hard to pretend that the librarian legacy is
disappearing. In my classes (one is the History of Libraries) my students
are 60% female. All of my assignments are to edit and contribute
to Wikipedia from the scholarship students uncover in archives and local
histories. 35 years ago I chaired the American Library Association
Committee on the Status of Women in Librarianship--baffled that a field of
women was dominated by men. It was a long effort to isolate factors that
resulted in status differential but the factors were 1)publishing;
2) professional involvement; 3) willingness to relocate.
So, the issue of women's opportunity for full participation continues. I
will do my best to encourage women to be involved in Wikipedia and thus
help to broaden the perspective. Reading this list has been very
inspirational. In the past ten years my efforts to edit in Wikipedia were
very discouraging in spite of a doctoral degree in my subject field. I know
there were many nameless boys delighting in destruction. I have completely
given up trying to post images as the image watchers delight in making this
near to impossible even if one is trying to upload one's own pictures. The
cover of a journal I edit, that is in the commons that I had full editorial
board approval to upload has never been allowed. But a boy in pajamas beat
me every time
.
This group has shown that that is so and must be fought--before I
encountered this group I was more and more discouraged. Don't back down.
