Hi all,
if it's not too late you could include https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wangari_Maathai for translation. On Sunday, February 19, 2017, < african-wikimedians-request@lists.wikimedia.org> wrote:

Saudi Arabia is borderline... but came out when I did some WikiData/Category search for GA Africa Women. But the fact she is borderline is annoying. She is also fairly well translated already.
Anna is a fairly good bio (strangely... it is still recorded as "Stub" here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Anna_Tibaijuka) Less translated. Interesting caracter. And undoubtely from Africa.
So yeah... ok. Let me fix that.
But Ingo, can you make sure to review the article (check languages, fix links etc.) ?
Thanks
Flo

Chere Florence
if it is allowed to point out that Saudi Arabia is not exactly Africa, so what about taking Anna Tibaijuka from Tanzania in the list instead? (so far existing in Deutsch, Français, Hrvatski, Kiswahili, Polski, Português, 中文 - which is less than the lady from Saudi or Yaa Asantewaa)
Cheers

Hi Flo,
I completely agree with you on the need to do cleanup on the English
language version of the articles before translation. In most cases, people hardly check for errors before translation. You can nominate the 16 articles for improvement at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Wikipedia:Today's_articles_for_improvement/Nominations. However, this does not stop anyone on this list from helping with improvements as well.
Best,
Isaac

I very much hope so.
But right now... what we need is to review the articles so as to avoid keeping obvious and stupid mistakes in the biographies before
translation.
And to make sure the English versions are ok, because I suspect most people would be more likely to translate from English rather than other language.
Quality of articles vary A LOT. Initially, I thought we could find 16 articles about african women of good quality. Well... no.... not so. I searched a lot. There are hardly any GA articles about African women. Half of the current GA ones were done this year.
So the articles are a mix of GA articles and articles of lesser quality but interesting nevertheless. Either not translated in many languages or most versions being stubs.

In about a week, we will launch a friendly "translate-a-thon" effort on 16 biographies of African women so that they get translated in "as many languages as possible" (at least 16).
In the meanwhile, we need your help to "improve/polish" the ENGLISH Wikipedia version of the biographies selected (as it is likely to be the "master" of most translations). #16wikiwomen
Please join and help us to do that : https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/16_African_Women_
Translate-a-thon#Our_list_of_16_articles
The complete list includes
- Malouma, Mauritanian singer, songwriter and politician
- Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, politician, South Africa
- Cri-Zelda Brits, South African crickete
- Manal al-Sharif, Saudi women's rights activist
- Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Nigerian women's rights activist
- Flora Nwapa, Nigerian Igbo writer
- Samia Yusuf Omar, Sprinter from Somalia
- Maggie Laubser, South African painter
- Fatima Massaquoi, Pioneer educator in Liberia
- Frances Ames, South African neurologist, psychiatrist, and human
rights activist
- Asmaa Mahfouz, Egyptian activist
- Yaa Asantewaa, Ghana, former Queen Mother
- Fatou Bensouda, Gambian lawyer
- Martha Karua, Kenyan politician
- Chinwendu Ihezuo, Nigerian professional footballer
- Nassima Saifi, Paralympian athlete from Algeria
Please defend the colors of your nation if one biography is about someone from your country !

Dear Mr. or Ms.,
I have submitted a proposal to IdeaLab Inspire about the creation of a group that searches for, invites and convinces professors emeriti to work on Wikipedia. As you already know, these professors emeriti have much free time, are willing to spread their scientific proficiency and knowledge worldwide so that younger researchers and people can learn from it and consequently will be happy to contribute to Wikipedia as it can easily help them achieve what they like. If you liked this important idea, please support it by endorsing it in https://meta.wikimedia.org/ wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Inviting_Professors_Emeriti_to_contribute_to_Wikipedia .
Yours Sincerely,
Houcemeddine Turki
