Today the Wikimedia Foundation, in cooperation with a number of volunteers
who attended the Wikimedia Conference, have posted on Twitter and Facebook
a video message speaking to the one-year anniversary of the block of
Wikipedia in Turkey.
The video re-enforces our message that this block is a lost opportunity
both for the people of Turkey and the rest of the world. Any assistance
that you all can offer in terms of helping circulate the video amongst your
networks would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
Are there any speakers of the Jula language (also known as Dioula)?
If you know this language, I wanted to let you know that there is demand
from people for Wikipedia articles in this language.
I've been researching the usage of the search box in Wikipedia's
interlanguage links panel, and I can see that there are many people
searching for this language while they are reading articles in French and
English. They cannot find anything because the Wikipedia in this language
doesn't exist yet, but if it existed, there would be people who would want
to read it.
If you speak this language or know somebody who does, please contact me.
I'll be happy to help you start a Wikipedia in it.
(I'm expecting these questions, so I'll just answer them right away.
Q: Where can I read about this research?
A: I'll publish a report very, very soon.
Q: Are there any languages that people are searching?
A: Yes, there are many, and you'll see all of them in the report, but I
wanted to mention Jula especially because it's the most notable languages
that came up in this research in which there is no Wikipedia at all, not
even an Incubator. There are other languages of Africa that came up there,
such as Yoruba, Xhosa and others, but there are Wikipedias in them, albeit
small ones.)

Hope this email finds you well. We are sending this message to select
community mailing lists and all previous recipients of a Wikimedia
Foundation Rapid Grant.
We have an announcement regarding the closure of the Rapid Grants [1]
program between May 14 - June 30, 2018. This year we've received a lot of
interest in the program and this quarter we've almost doubled the amount of
grants offered to the community compared to last year's quarter. You can

reference. Unfortunately, this means we've expended our funds for this
fiscal year. The last date we will be receiving an application for a rapid
grant before the closure will be *Friday, May 11, 2018*.
We encourage *Wiki Loves Earth* participants to apply for a Rapid Grant by
May 11, 2018 to receive support for their project.
The grant program will be open again to receive grant requests starting *July
1, 2018*. At this point we will be implementing the following changes:
1. There will be a minimum of *$500 USD* for grant requests
2. Applications will only be accepted between the *1st - 15th of each month*.
This is to help with our current workflow and to allow us to be more
responsive to your requests.

*Hello 1Lib1Ref Organizers,#1Lib1Ref, the annual campaign where librarians
add references to improve Wikipedia, is coming back again this year,
running from May 15th to June 5th, 2018. Why twice? We heard from you a
desire to run it again out of excitement, because May is not summer
vacation for the southern hemisphere, and because Spanish Wikipedia's
birthday also falls in May. This is a great expansion of the event and it
means that there is another opportunity to make Wikipedia more factual and
verifiable by leveraging the expertise of librarians around the world. How
does this relate to the main campaign in January? We encourage librarians,
community members, and affiliates to make 1Lib1Ref their own. So whether
we call this 1Lib1Ref May, 1Lib1Ref for the Southern Hemisphere, or
1Lib1Ref Strikes Back, the point is the excitement is building again, and
we'd like you to be a part of it.If I participated in January, do I have to
do it again in May? It's entirely up to you, this is just another chance
if you want to do more, or if you couldn't get around to January
activities. This is a pilot for us, too, so we'll see how it goes and

Dear all,
I am happy to share another update on the movement strategy process. As we
resume work, we’re planning to put together a team to design and facilitate
the next phase of the movement strategy process. This team will be
responsible for shaping the overall process in a way that supports
participation and engagement of the diverse constituents and stakeholders
of our movement.
As I mentioned in my last email, I’ve asked Nicole Ebber of WMDE to take on
the role as Process Lead for this next phase. She has been busy mapping out
the team and skills we will need to move forward, including writing
descriptions for each role, which you can find on Meta-wiki

In clarifying these roles, it became evident that there are some people who
have played a major role in the process to-date and who bring much-needed
skills and insight to the team. As a result, we’ve asked two people from
the first phase to formalize their collaboration in the Strategy Process
Architect and Process Support Lead capacity and join this next phase as
core team members. *We’re still finalizing details, but I look forward to
announcing them soon!*
We are still looking for people for two of the other roles in the core
team. In the first phase of the process, last year, we worked with a number
of consultants from outside the movement.
For this phase, *I am very interested in building a team from within our
movement* -- bringing together people with a passion for our movement, the
necessary skills for the work we need to do, and an interest in helping us
solve some of our most challenging questions. I believe that this is an
exciting opportunity to take on a leadership role, develop their skills,
and work on an essential priority for the future of our movement. *I
strongly encourage people from all across the movement to apply. *
*We are looking for candidates for these two positions: *
- *Information & Knowledge Manager* - A person with experience in
managing the flow of large amounts of qualitative information. They will
be
responsible for ensuring the effective, yet inclusive, collection of
inputs
from movement stakeholder discussions around key questions and themes of
Phase II. They will be responsible for making sure community has clarity
about the process itself and its goals, for ensuring a steady information
flow to critical stakeholders, and for effective communication of the

*We strongly encourage applications from members of our extended Wikimedia
community. *Some additional notes:
- Both of these roles are meant to be 40 hours/week for a period of
approximately 24 months.
- Contractors in both roles can be located almost anywhere, with support
for travel as appropriate.
- Because we want people from across the movement to consider applying,
please note that these roles require you be comfortable working in
English,
but do not require English as a native language. Particularly for the
Project Manager role, the emphasis is on functional comfort, rather than
fluency.
- We are especially interested in candidates from our emerging
communities.

and groups from across and beyond the movement. This means that in the
course of the process, we will again be calling for a steering committee,
advisors, and liaisons to take many different perspectives and experiences
into account.
I am excited that we can now kick off the first steps of the process with
these team members and prepare for the first essential milestone in the
upcoming phase - the Wikimedia Conference and its movement strategy track.
