Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Movement Strategy: Open Call for Working Group
members
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Wikimedians,
Following up on Katherine’s email from last week[1], we are today
opening the call for Working Group members for 9 Thematic Areas (yes,
we added one more!).
== Working Group members ==
The Working Groups will map the present situation of their Thematic
Area, the obstacles and opportunities, as well as needed changes to
advance our movement in our strategic direction. They will identify
possible strategies for making these changes and develop concrete
recommendations for the movement on how to ratify and implement
them.[2]
Working Group members will need to be able to invest a minimum of 5
hours per week, but that time might vary depending on the workflow
that each group agrees upon. Members of the Working Groups are
expected to act in the interest of the movement, not in the interest
of their own organization or community.
== Selection of members ==
We are looking for a maximum of 15 members for each of the 9 groups.
For best results we will need a diverse set of members from across the
movement. We have developed a set of criteria, to ensure the necessary
expertise, diversity, and representation.[3] We will assemble a
Steering Committee to decide upon membership of the Working Groups in
close coordination with the Core Strategy Team.[4]
== Apply to become a working group member ==
We encourage everyone with an interest in the strategic conversations
to apply for becoming a Working Group member in their topic of
expertise. We recommend that movement organizations and groups create
internal processes for the selection of their candidates to avoid
multiple, competing applications.
The call will be open until June 25, 2018. ***Please apply via this
application form.[5]*** To prepare your application, you can consult
the overview of the questions asked in the form on Meta.[6]
== Next steps ==
We expect to be able to announce the Working Group members in the
second week of July, so that the working groups can be assembled,
onboarded and ready to start working before Wikimania. The first step
for the groups will be to agree upon their set-up and scope of work.
At Wikimania, we plan to convene the attending Working Group members
in the Strategy Space to discuss and refine their road to the
recommendations and ensure exchange between the groups.[7]
We invite you all to familiarize yourselves with the existing
documentation of the Working Group(s) of your interest,[8] add
comments, additional input or share your concerns via talk pages Your
comments will be then be taken into consideration by the respective
Working Groups.
We are looking forward to working and having these long-awaited
conversations with many of you!
In the name of the Strategy Core Team,
Nicole

Dear African Wikimedians,
I hope this email finds you well.
As you will remember that during our Wiki-Indaba
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Indaba> conference in Tunisia it was
agreed that we need to put together a steering committee that will be
responsible for capacity building which includes amongst other things
providing support to countries who wish to host Wiki-Indaba conference in
the future, support Wikimedians within the African continent who wants to
run Wikimedia projects but don't know where to start or how to go about
doing that, as well as finding out about the progress of projects run by
Wikimedians within the African continent and diaspora and letting everyone
know through social media etc.
Currently the Wiki-Indaba Steering Committee (WISCom)
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Indaba#Wiki_Indaba_Steering_Committee_…>
is composed of representatives from countries who were previously host to
the conference, this includes Myself, Bobby Shabangu and Felix Nartey. We
would like to increase the steering committee, and we are calling for
applications from volunteers who are interested to be part of the WISCom.
The applications can be done by answering a few questions on this page here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Indaba/Steering_Committee_(WISCom)> .
The due date for applications is Friday 22 June 2018.
You are free to share this message on other social groups for more
participation.

*Dear Friends,During Indaba 2018 in Tunisia, there was an announcement of
setting up a steering committee for the organisation of Indaba. The role of
the steering committee is to create a well-defined process for the
selection of future hosts of Indaba and supporting the Local Organising
Committee (LOC) in the preparation towards the conference. This thought was
carried to the African Meet Up at the Wikimedia Conference, where the issue
was deliberated and a proposed structure of the steering committee was
worked on. We wish to share this document
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NoQFHPdvrQeF6_C9K_M14CIlRdqwaE1_J9_B7Xy…>
to invite your contribution (suggestions and comments) on improving the
structure.[1]The current structure proposes membership/representation from
previous organisers of the conference, 3 volunteers slot (for anybody who
is willing to support the cause of Indaba), 2 liaisons from the Wikimedia
Foundation and a designated representative from the current Local
Organising Committee (LOC). At the moment the steering committee consists
of the representatives of previous organisers and we are looking to fill
the 3 volunteers slot. The steering committee will open a call for
interested volunteers soon. We are also working on a Meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Indaba> for Indaba and related
activities, we encourage you to visit it when you have the
opportunity.[2]On behalf of the steering committee,*--

Hi Isaac,
I mistakenly took this conversation out of the mailing list. I believe in
an open process. And I also believe that we must aim to solve problems that
win arguments.
We've sent an e-mail on this mailing list early last month for everyone to
participate in exactly that process of developing, designing and defining
the scope and roles of the committee. Unfortunately I didn't see you
participate in that process. (I'll forward you the email).
And the suggestion of a Wiki-Indaba Steering committee as I've explained
many times did not start in Tunisia. It started in 2014 in Johannesburg.

Bobby Shabangu

Hello All,
I think this may be worth our interest.
Can this (working groups) be added to the agenda for the African hour?

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Update #4: Upcoming call for participation in
Working Groups
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Cc: Staff (All) <wmfall(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, EDs mailing list <
eds(a)listen.wikimedia.de>
Dear all,
It’s been a while since I sent out the last movement strategy update. A lot
has happened in the meantime, and I wanted to give you a heads-up regarding
an upcoming call for participation!
But first things first:
1. The report from the Wikimedia Conference Movement Strategy Track
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2018/Documentation/Mov…
>
has been published[1]. It captures all the conversations, insights and
outputs from three days of intense strategy work, so it’s a (quite) long
but very interesting read. It is meant to document the state of the process
and to allow for a deep dive into it. It should be especially valuable for
those of you who did not have a chance to participate in the conference or
attended another conference track.
2. Based on WMCON outputs (and various conversations we’ve been having in
our movement for years), the core strategy team has mapped eight key
thematic areas
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Working…
>
[2] -- and some initial guiding questions -- that should to be answered to
enable us to advance towards our strategic direction. These areas include:
- Roles & Responsibilities
- Resource Allocation & Revenue Streams
- Diversity
- Partnerships
- Capacity Building
- Community Health
- Technology
- Advocacy
3. The core team will be supporting the creation of Working Groups to take
on these critical conversations. These working groups will be asked to
assess the current situation of the thematic area, and obstacles and
opportunities. They’ll have access to all the relevant information already
collected, and the chance to do further research if needed. They’ll be
asked to identify the changes needed in movement structures and develop
concrete recommendations for the movement on how to ratify and implement
them.[3] An open call for working group members will go out to the movement
this week -- please stay tuned for an update from Nicole!
I also had the chance to present more about these plans at last week’s
Metrics Meeting. Please do take a look, either look it all up on the
Meta[3] or watch the video![4]
Cheers,
Katherine

Dear African Wikimedians
Yesterday the Comms team for Wikimania sent out the first press release to South Africa’s media. It would be great if you could consider sharing this press release with people (especially media) within your networks. If you speak Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu (or any of the other Africa-based languages), Arabic, French or Portuguese, please also consider translating it onto the page.

Now is the time for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania! FOSS4G 2018 will host numerous
workshops over 27 - 28 August with exciting keynotes and presentations at
the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre 29 - 31 August, and
finally Code Sprints and community building events September 1 & 2. In
addition to bringing together the FOSS4G community in Dar, the 21st QGIS
Developer meeting
<https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/wiki/DeveloperMeetingZanzibar2018> will take
place in Zanzibar (a short 60min ferry trip away!) the 20 - 24 of August -
the Geospatial Savanna is on the rise in East Africa!
The vision for our conference is to make it as accessible and inclusive as
possible, bridging the gaps between the various communities that make us so
strong, to make us stronger. This will be achieved through a Travel Grant
Program that will enable economically disadvantaged participants the
opportunity to attend, covering travel, lodging and conference costs. This
will be bolstered by an exciting conference program, taking the very best
that the open source geospatial community can offer. This ranges from
locating schools to the instrumentation of communities with cheap, open
source, 3D printed weather stations that improve community resilience to
climate change.
Our theme for FOSS4G 2018 is “Leave No-One Behind”. We live in a world
where our users and developers have the opportunity to make a difference to
the lives of everyone, whether it’s those in extreme poverty looking for
access to clean water, to those using routing algorithms to calculate the
fastest route to work. Location and geography are at the heart of these
challenges and a FOSS4G 2018 in Dar es Salaam will invigorate our existing
projects, bringing them to new users and developers while supporting and
nurturing the existing community.
To deliver on this mission, we've built collaborations with various
communities, from within the open source geospatial community and beyond.
For example, in collaborating with Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team
<https://www.hotosm.org/>, FOSS4G 2018 will host their annual summit as a
track within the main program; collaborating with Understanding Risk:
Africa, to focus on the use of open geospatial tools like Geoserver,
Geonode, and Inasafe while be bringing users and developers together at an
extent not done before. To see the full extent of this exciting program,
have a look at the lists of presentations
<https://2018.foss4g.org/programme/list-of-presentations/> and workshops
<https://2018.foss4g.org/workshop-schedule/>!
Ultimately, you should attend FOSS4G 2018 because:
- Dar es Salaam is the centre of technological innovation, culture and
social activities in Tanzania;
- A vibrant city of many cultures and warm hospitality;
- The gateway to African sights, such as world beating safaris, heritage
and world leading beaches;
- A historic centre surrounded by the construction of a new Africa;
- At the centre of East Africa, within easy reach of the world;
Workshop, Main Conference (and experience tickets!) are now available at
2018.foss4g.org at the lowest early bird price in years for a global
FOSS4G: $500. Early bird registration ends on June 5, book your place
