Hello all, and apologies for crossposting!
I hope you are doing well!
As you may have noticed when we announced the partnership in August [1]:
the Wikimedia Foundation is working with the UN Human Rights to help expand
the availability of knowledge about human rights online.
As one of our first collaborations, we are going to be running a campaign
from November 15 - January 30 to add and improve knowledge about human
rights on Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. The initial focus of the
campaign will be on improving articles about topics related to the UN
Declaration of Human Rights and youth standing up for human rights. More
information about the campaign is also available here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights
We would like to invite you to get involved in the campaign in one of
several ways:
Help us build the list!
-
We need your help identifying more topics related to youth involved in
human rights that don’t have articles on Wikipedia or could use further
improvement. We would like to represent many different languages and
geographies in the campaign. To propose topics for the list, see
instructions at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/List#Adding_a_topic_to_t…
Organize an online or offline event!
We need your help finding community leaders from throughout the Wikimedia
to:
-
Host an online campaign on your language Wikipedia! To learn more about
hosting a local topical campaign see the kit here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Organize#Campaign
-
Hold an in person editathon with local human rights organizations or
partners! To learn more, check out the kit here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Organize#Editathon
Promote the campaign starting Dec. 10 for International Human Rights Day!
Help us amplify your efforts around the campaign and publicize it to wide
audiences. We’ll be sharing a communications toolkit (including graphics)
soon with suggestions on reaching out to folks about the campaign.
-
Reach out to local media and supporters: Journalists and the public
can help add momentum to the campaign through storytelling and spreading
the word.
-
Promote the campaign on social media: We’ll be using
#WikiForHumanRights to promote the campaign on social media, when we
increase the communication to the public on 10 December
If you want to help in other ways, let us know on the discuss space
#human-rights tag
<https://discuss-space.wmflabs.org/t/do-you-have-questions-about-organizing-…>
or by emailing Alex Stinson <astinson(a)wikimedia.org and Luisina Ferrante <
educacion(a)wikimedia.org.ar>
If you are interested, let us know by indicating your interest to organize
in the Organize sections linked above!
Note: We are still updating the communications assets for the campaign! To
watch for those materials, add
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Share to your meta
watchlist.
Have questions?
If you have questions, we are going to be hosting an office hour next
Tuesday

or you can ask questions on the discuss space #human-rights tag

.
Looking forward to your engagement with the campaign!

Librarians and library lovers,
We hope that you and your loved ones are taking care during this
challenging time for the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected
countless aspects of our personal and professional lives, and the Wikimedia
Foundation is sending our very best wishes to all of you.
Equitable access to reliable, unbiased information has never been more
important. From *May 15th to June 5th*, we will be running the global
#1Lib1Ref campaign (virtually), with a focus on improving and increasing
the quality of content for the billions of people staying at home during
the public health crisis. As you may know, Wikipedia and other Wikimedia
projects have seen record-breaking pageviews in the last few weeks,
reflecting that people around the world are turning to us for trustworthy
information.[1]
With that in mind, this is a critical time to bring librarians and
Wikimedia together: more people are reading and learning from the web, and
we need to strengthen trust in our content through citations. Join us as we
do that, by helping us organize to encourage library communities to add one
more citation to Wikipedia.
What can you do?
We are advising everyone to follow WHO health guidelines
<https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019> and not
conduct in-person events. Instead, we will organize virtually, and we have
created recommendations for online meetings! Please share your digital
events so #1Lib1Ref contributors can join you
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Virtual_Coff…>
!
You can visit our resource page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Resources>
for guides on how to virtually participate in the campaign. Ensure your
contribution is recorded by using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag in your edit summary.
This is very important for us to monitor the reach and success of the
initiative.
Let us know if you need new kinds of support
We know that with the COVID-19 pandemic, it's not as easy to participate in
volunteer activities or organizing online activities. Many of us are
focusing on our families, figuring our homeschooling and working remotely,
and responding to the demands of the crisis in other ways. We also know
that certain parts of the library sector are facing difficult challenges,
such as layoffs, increased work, or extreme changes in work.
We want to know how the pandemic may affect your ability to participate in
#1Lib1Ref, as well as how we can support you better in this unprecedented
situation. Please fill out this short survey
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Virtual…>
to help us better understand how to support you during this round!
Join our communications!
You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (
libraries(a)lists.wikimedia.org), and 1Lib1Ref (1lib1ref(a)lists.wikimedia.org)
mailing lists, or by joining the Wikimedia + Libraries User Group:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_and_Libraries_User_Group
As we get closer to the launch of the campaign next month, we will update
our social media toolkit, which you can use to spread the word about
#1Lib1Ref. Stay tuned for updates on this page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Share>.
Looking forward to #1Lib1Ref!
You can learn about last year's campaign and what we learned in our
recently-released blog post at Medium

Chère communauté Wikimedia africaine,
Nous vous invitons à participer à Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP), un
nouveau concours mondial qui se déroulera de juillet à août 2020:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Pages_Wanting_Photos
Les participants choisiront parmi les pages Wikipedia sans images photo,
puis ajouteront un fichier approprié parmi les milliers de photos dans
Wikimedia Commons, en particulier celles téléchargées à partir de concours
thématiques (Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore,
l'adresse:

Hi everyone,
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic where several in-person Wiki Loves
Africa events have been cancelled, Wiki Loves Africa is holding an online
event/webinar at 13:00 hours UTC on 28 March 2020.
This is an opportunity for the WLA community to meet online and also to get
more people involved in this year's contest which was extended to 15th
April.
The online event will cover
- Why you should contribute your images to the Wiki Loves Africa
photographic contest
- How to contribute
- Copyright considerations
- What will happen to your photographs on Wikimedia projects
Please register and share this with your community as well as any
photographers or photographers networks or groups you know using the link
below
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wiki-loves-africa-2020-africa-on-the-move-tick…
And feel free to enter your images <http://bit.ly/EnterWLA2020> at any time
before 15th April
Kind regards,
Geoffrey
The Wiki Loves Africa photographic contest is currently running, for the
6th year, under the theme "Africa on the Move"
It should be made clear that the goal of the contest is not limited to
collecting freely licenced images to illustrate wikipedia articles
(though of course, there is also that...). It is also the opportunity to
recruit and train new contributors. It is also the opportunity to
promote the wikimedia projects in countries where the awareness can
still benefit from improvements. It is also the opportunity for tiny new
groups to join the larger community and increase their knowledge of our
mouvement.
Naturally... this implies that a large part of the photo contest
operations usually take place in offline (face-to-face) events
(edit-a-thons, photo walks, upload sessions etc.). Which obviously is
currently a problem...
So... we have just announced some modifications to the contest rules and
operations.
This is due to the global health crisis with all Wikimedia related
events being cancelled.
And this is due to a context... with rather few cases in most African
countries, the population in Africa is currently not following the
recent recommandations to practice social distanciation or even to stay
at home.
First note that all offline activities are being cancelled as expected.
Second, winners ceremonies will be either cancelled (and gifts sent by
postal mail to winners) or will be delayed till... later (we recommand
to maintain the ceremonies and host them after the crisis is over)
The entry deadline for Wiki Loves Africa has been extended to *15th
APRIL 2020* to accomodate the following changes :
We suggest people to upload already existing, archived, images that are
sitting on their hard drives at home.
We will also be hosting some ONLINE events and activities to ensure that
participants and teams are all supported and can still enter. Bear with
us... this will be an experiment ;)
We also decided to urge people to stay at home using the hashtags
#StayAtHome <https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/stayathome?epa=HASHTAG>
and #RestezChezVous and hope that this will help local teams further
spread this message locally for the sake of all.
We have created a bunch of visuals to improve communication in those
directions, which will be used in the next few days.
