This is a volunteer role and the appointment is for two years. Please note that, while you are a member of the Committee, you will not be able to run for any election overseen by the Committee – this includes the upcoming 2017 Board and FDC elections and any other election where the committee had already begun formal preparation before your departure. You will also be restricted in your ability to publicly advocate for community members running in those elections. In practice, a member's duties involve communicating with the global committee who help to steward Board and FDC Elections. During an election period – one of which is over the next three to four months – this will be especially important as you help to run the upcoming elections for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees and the Funds Dissemination Committee. During this period, members of the Elections Committee meet for semi-regular meetings to discuss the current election. However, this appointment is not just for election periods. Wiki Indaba 2017 & Beyond...

Hi All, I hope all is well and greetings from the just ended Wiki Indaba in Accra, Ghana. Just to quickly update the community, Indaba was fun and highly informative. There were 50 people in attendance spanning three continents, including Africa, Europe and North America. In order to share with the community what ensued, each delegate is required to organize a follow up event in their various countries and so we urge you to require of them their role to share in what they have learnt. Wiki Loves Africa 2016 closed :)

Hello everyone Wiki Loves Africa 2016 is now closed ! Congratulations everyone ! I think a couple of people went to bed with blurry eyes from final uploads and I hope Georges recovered a decent internet connexion to finish his uploads today. Christine and I finished fixing the tagging issue I discussed with some of you yesterday by email (we'll talk more of this later to see how to better deal with tagging next year). So... in short... current grand total is 7817 pictures. * Ivory Coast 1147 * Cameroun 852 * Nigeria 765 * Tunisia 731 * Ghana 638 * Ouganda 526 * Egypt 615 * Kenya 385 * Morroco 317 * South Africa 315 * Algeria 281 * Tanzania 190 It is to note that Morroco and South Africa were not specifically supported within the WLA framework, and it is lovely to see those figures for them. Beyond figures... I am pleased to say that the quality of the pictures is clearly on the rise. - Increase of skills within the local teams ? - Better photographic material ? - More deals with professional photographers ? - Better visibility of the contest bringing in more diverse participants ? - More partnerships bringing in pictures ? There are clearly several reasons to explain that. But in any cases... great job. I enjoyed seeing pictures from partners who emerged from the WLW project, such as https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Gogeafrica Or a winner of last year contest still around : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Mustapha_BRAHIM_DJELLOUL So really... awesome job everyone ! -------- What's next ? 1. Voting... jury... will be managed this year by Isla. If you want to help in setting up the jury tool, the wiki pages for the community vote etc. get in touch with her ! 2. Reuse and categorization of images Some teams have planned events to categorize and integrate images in Wikipedia articles (great). If it is not the case of your local team... please consider doing some of it all by yourself. It is NOT hard. To get the ball rolling... I made Asaf dream come true... the Dance article did not really have any dance video featured. He was using that example when talking to audience to illustrate the fact there was still a LOT to do on Wikipedia. Well... he will not be able to use that argument anymore... the Dance article now has a dance video. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dance&diff=prev&oldid=763008886 And the Kuduro article is illustrated : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuduro So what about you ? What about going through a category of images uploaded during WLAf and making sure to illustrate... 5 articles ? 10 articles ? More ? Asaf probably still think there is a lot to do... (but he probably needs to explain more about how to use Glamify... uh) 3. Quality Please consider doing as Tunisian and Algerian teams do and work toward having your best pictures recognised as quality pictures. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Quality_images_from_Wiki_Loves_… In particular those teams who complained during WikiIndaba that Africa UserGroups did not enjoy international recognition. Hello guys Wiki Loves Africa is closing tonight :) I see some teams still have events and uploads sessions today and this is great. Overall slighly less pictures this year than last year; and generally more off-topic than previous years (no idea why...) but of much higher quality generally ! So this is really cool ! All focus countries enjoy pretty high participation rates (*), which is a pleasure. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Africa_2… ------- If you are still in mass upload sessions and _do not go through the upload page_, I would like to ask, please, to make sure that you pictures are taggued with {{Wiki Loves Africa 2016}} [[Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016 without categories]] (if you do not put categories beside the maintenance ones) But generally, I would advise you to start an upload session by clicking on that GREEN button here : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2016/Participa… It automatically tag pictures and reduce the manual workload afterwards.
