Dear All
The Wiki Loves Africa team are pleased to announce the forth and final winner of the Wiki Loves Africa 2016 prize. The Organizers Prize goes to the Nubian Flute Player by Ahmed Emad H (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nubian_flute_player.jpg <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nubian_flute_player.jpg>).
The Community Prize was cancelled for the 2016 competition as there was not enough participation from within the community. Of those that did vote, a few seemed to be concerned with tampering with the vote. After a long and hard decision and time spent going through the contributions of each voter, the organisers decided to not award the Community Prize at all this year. This was tough decision made as the bid to influence the vote is not within the spirit of the Wikimedia movement. We felt that, as the stewards of the WMF’s grant, we could not justify awarding the prize under this dark cloud.
As the organisers of the competition we have awarded the Organisers Prize to Nubian Flute Player by Ahmed Emad H as it displays excellent framing and use of colour and light, as well as beautifully depicting on a rarely seen corner, in this case Nubia in Egypt, of this vast continent. Further, the collection of work that Ahmed Emad H contributed to Commons during this time has provided a wonderful spotlight on singers and musicians in Egypt: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles/Ahmed_Emad_H
You can view all the winners here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2016/Winners <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2016/Winners>
Congratulations to Ahmed!! Thanks again to the Jury for their initial hard work in determining the first 3 winners.

AfroCROWD joins Icahn School of Medicine for a Race and Gender Wikipedia Editathon
Learn to Edit Wikipedia and Unearth Hidden Figures in Medicine
When:Sunday, April 28, 2017, 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Where: Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai New York
Annenberg 12-01, 1468 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10029
You are invited to this month's AfroCROWD Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York City. Help discover and bring light to hidden figures of African descent in medicine like [5] [6] [7] Dr. Charles Drew, creater of the blood bank, or Harlem's own, [8] [9] Dr. Patricia Bath, medical pioneer and inventor of the cataract laser treatment and [10] [11] [12] Henrietta Lacks,a black woman with a tremendous story, who, in death, saved millions. Plus many more.
Also, did you know that Wikipedia is a growing source of medical information? Healthcare providers, trainees, and consumers alike use Wikipedia to access health information, but the WikiMed editing community remains small, predominantly male and with few people of color. Taking an active role with Wikipedia is achievable for clinicians, students and others who see and will fix errors, making it a stronger, better, open resource to communities.
Attendees of all skill levels are welcome. The event is Inspired by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Race and Bias Initiativeand Wikipedia intersectional advocates, the Levy Libraryand partners,ISMMS WikiMed student groupand AfroCROWD(Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia).
As always, all of our events are free and open to the public.Wikipedia coaches will be on hand to help.

AfroCROWDers make history during Black History and Women's History Months, 2017
Black History Month:AfroCROWD actively participated in [25] Black WikiHistory Monthnational outreach campaign for the third year in a row this February, helping bring together members of the community and general public to contribute content related to black history on Wikipedia.
We began the month with an edit-a-thon at noted management firm Accenture, partnering with their African American Employee Resource Group (AAERG) for a fun event that focused on the contributions of the African American community in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Then we headed to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culturein Harlem for our a Black History Month Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in honor of the Center's Black Power! exhibit. For the first time via video and satellite link, we heard from Wikipedia editors who were also editing on the topic of Black History Month in Ghana, Ivory Coast and other parts of the continent of Africa. An international effort.
The following day we book-ended our Black History Month celebrations with a meetup at theAce Hotel, New York City focused on Wikimedia's new WikiData technology. Wikidata is an exciting new way to input and update data, including information pertinent to the black community, using games and other query methods via Wikipedia.
Women's History Month:The coming of March meant the commencement of Women's History Month during which we joined the Fashion Institute of Technology and our friends at [26] Art+Feminismfor a Wikipedia edit-a-thon on Black women fashion designers.
Photos:Left:Fashion Institiute of Technology Wikipedia edit-a-thon on Black women designers. Right:New Wikipedia editors at the Accenture Black History Month Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Blacks in Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM)
We also teamed up with with black artist initiative, the Black Lunch Table, for a breakout seminar on women artists at the annual Art+FeminismWikipedia edit-a-thon conference at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Learn more about the Black Lunch Table in the "Other World of WIkimedia Happenings" section above.
The event attracted participants from all over North America, including yellow capped students from local Democracy Prep High Schoolwho visited our MoMA session.
It's been a busy and fantastic season. We can't wait to see you at a coming event!

Dear members of the African Community,
The Wikipedia Library (TWL) is starting a usergroup and we ask that members
of the African community who are interested in knowing more or contributing
to the usergroup, signup on the meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Library_User_Group>.[1] We
encourage you to share this with people you know may be interested and
librarians around you.
In view of this we are documenting all existing partnerships with Libraries
globally. Tell us what partnerships you have currently built and how you
are exploring such partnerships. We are willing to help you explore other
ways of using such partnerships and even build activities around your work
with them. You can privately email me the details of your current
partnership(s) with any library in your country by providing the following
details *(name of institution, country, affiliate/group, presence of a
Wikipedian in Residence (WIR), contact of library, email of library)*
I am happy to assist current TWL coordinators who need assistance with
their duties and ready to support existing TWL branches on the continent.
It will be great to help any country who wishes to start a TWL branch in
their country and please don't hesitate to contact me on any issues
concerning TWL.

To: wmcon17(a)listen.wikimedia.de
Hi fellow attendees,
I recently started a project as Wikimedian-in-Residence at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New York City:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/Metropolitan_Museum_of_Art
As the Met is a major "encyclopedic" museum with an international
collection, we'd like to start collaborations soon with Wikimedia chapters
and related groups around the world.
Please join the WikiProject if you are interested:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/Metropolitan_
Museum_of_Art/Members
Besides uploading ~375k images eventually, we also want to help facilitate
articles on these artworks on multiple language Wikipedias, and are
developing some special tools to create drafts from Wikidata,
You can search the Met collection to see examples of artworks from your own
country/region:
http://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/
I'd also be very glad to get in touch with folks in-person at the
conference, or by personal email. If folks are interested, we could do an
informal meetup as well.
Thanks,
Richard

On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Board Elections Committee, I am pleased to announce that self-nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Elections.[1]
The Board of Trustees (Board) is the decision-making body that is ultimately responsible for the long-term sustainability of the Wikimedia Foundation,[2] so we value wide input into its selection. More information about this role can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>. Please read the letter from the Board of Trustees calling for candidates here: <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>.
The candidacy submission phase will last from April 7 (00:00 UTC) to April 20 (23:59 UTC) and occurring on Meta-Wiki at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>
We will also be accepting questions to ask the candidates from April 7 to April 20. You can submit your questions on Meta-Wiki at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>
Once the questions submission period has ended on April 20, the Elections Committee will then collate the questions for the candidates to respond to beginning on April 21.
The goal of this process is to fill the three community-selected seats on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. The election results will be used by the Board itself to select its new members.
The full schedule for the Board elections is as follows. All dates are inclusive, that is, from the beginning of the first day (UTC) to the end of the last.
* April 7 (00:00 UTC) - April 20 (23:59 UTC): Board nominations
* April 7 - April 20: Board candidates questions submission period
* April 21 - April 30: Board candidates answer questions
* May 1 - May 14: Board voting period
* May 15-19: Board vote checking
* May 20: Board result announcement goal
In addition to the Board elections, we will also soon be holding elections for the following roles:
* Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC)
** There are five positions being filled. More information about this election can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Funds_D…>.
* Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson (Ombuds)
** One position is being filled. More information about this election can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Funds_D…>.
Please note that this year the Board of Trustees elections will be held before the FDC and Ombuds elections. Candidates who are not elected to the Board are explicitly permitted and encouraged to submit themselves as candidates to the FDC or Ombuds positions after the results of the Board elections are announced.
More information on this year's elections can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017>.
Please feel free to post a note about the election on your project's village pump. Any questions related to the election can be posted on the talk page on Meta, or sent to the election committee's mailing list, <board-elections AT wikimedia.org>.
On behalf of the Election Committee,
Katie Chan, Chair, Board Election Committee

Hi all,
I have created an African Meetup under the thematic/regional meetups on the
upcoming WMCON meta page. [1]
Come lets discuss the next steps for Indaba, share updates from the
continent, upcoming user groups, next office hours with the Global reach
team, etc.
Sign your name under the participants section if you will be attending and
see you in Berlin...
Cheers,
