(English) Dear Wikimedians,
The Wikimedia Foundation’s Community Resources team and the Middle East and
Africa (MEA) Regional Funding Committee invite you to apply to become a
committee member in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region. The MEA
Committee supports the Wikimedia Foundation Funds [1] programs'
participatory grantmaking practice. The deadline for applying is *February

The MEA Committee reviews grant proposals from affiliates and other
community members in the Middle East and Africa who seek grant funding from
the Wikimedia Foundation. Committee responsibilities include: providing
thought partnership to help support applicants and strengthen their

Dear all,
Kindly note:
1) this mailing list has hundreds subscribers;
2) the mailing list is not a chat/messenger, it is should consist only the
important information, so no one will miss it;
3) overcrowding the mailing list with non-mandatory personal short
replies/requests is not polite, as you should remember that hundreds of
people will read it.
If you have any requests/questions, please address them privately to the
single recipient of your request/question, not hundreds of people that have
to read it.
If you would like to thank someone from the mailing list, please do so
privately, avoiding hundreds of people reading it.
Finally, I would like to apologize for sending this essential email that
everyone has to read, but I hope at least this one will stop the continuing
requests/questions/replies on private matters.
Thank you for understanding, and have a nice day.
Best regards,
Levon

Hello friends
A couple of months ago, Wiki in Africa published a call to hire for a
position of facilitator at Wiki in Africa, in particular to help on the
Wiki Loves Africa initiative
I am very happy to announce our new WLA facilitator, Wilson Oluoha.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Wilson is a multi-lingual Information and Media
Scientist with a passion for open access to knowledge and building
sustainable knowledge communities.
He is a wise amateur photographer, public speaker and budding pro
cyclist who joined the Wikimedia movement in 2018 through the Igbo
language affiliate in Nigeria. In 2022, he founded IG WikiCommons Hub -
a community of Nigerians committed to contributing content to the open
knowledge movement via Wikimedia Commons.
This is the link to his UserPage on meta :
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:OtuNwachinemere
Please give him a warm welcome :)
I would like to also extend my thanks to all the people we received
applications from. This has been a tough call but we really appreciated
the interest from so many of you.
Way forward : Wilson will progressively take over Ceslause
responsibilities on the Wiki Loves Africa project, BUT Ceslause will
stay involved.

Dear All,
The registration for the above course is now open.
Do recall that last year, AfLIA received a grant for the training of
information professionals in the African library and information science
sector including archives and museums to effectively open up and link
knowledge by making their library, archive and museum collections more
visible through Wikidata.
The project has facilitated the development of an online course –* Promoting
open knowledge practices in African libraries through Wikidata, *also known
as the *AfLIA Wikidata Online Course**. *Among other things, this course is
expected to equip information professionals working in glam with the
requisite skills to understand how to use of Wikidata;
- as a database and visualization tool for mapping knowledge,
- for increasing the reach and access of the unique collections of
numerous African libraries, museums and archives
- for connecting their collections through linking local metadata with a
network of global metadata
- as a platform for description of information resources and
- for changing bibliographic details into structured data
*This course will be administered in English and French* and will provide
African information professionals an opportunity to further their discovery
journey about Wikimedia projects and communities, and to continue
spearheading the campaign for free knowledge.
We also envisage that this will enrich African knowledge on Wikidata as
well as funnel more glam professionals into Wikimedia communities in the
continent.
The registration link is here -
https://web.aflia.net/aflia-wikidata-online-course-registration-now-open/
Also, read more about the African Wikimedians who built the scaffolding for
the course and who will lead in the course delivery -
https://web.aflia.net/aflia-takes-on-four-wikimedians-for-the-wikidata-proj…
Kindly bring this to the attention of your communities.
Thank you.
