Dear Community,
(apologies for cross-posting!)
Prizes or awards are key to volunteer organisations such as Wikimedia. It's
one way of providing motivation or encouraging continuous participation.
Even so, it's often very hard to decide on what could be an ideal prize for
a campaign. We have been hearing lots of questions from organizers about
appropriate criteria, types and amounts as prizes for a campaign. The
Wikimedia Foundation Campaigns Team invites you to our next virtual office
hour on 25th March at 3:00pm UTC via zoom[1] to discuss this topic with
organizers experienced at using prizes as part of competitions.[2]
The Campaigns Office hour is an opportunity to learn about how others have
organized content campaigns, new or emerging tools and tactics, and ask
questions about how campaigns have been implemented by other organizers.
The goal of this office hour will be to evaluate organizer concerns and
challenges, with a particular focus on helping photography campaigns and
content writing campaigns in creating consistent prize philosophies within
the Wikimedia Movement. Our recent office hour explained the 2021
WikiForHumanRights Campaign dubbed “Right to a Healthy Environment” (watch
video).[3] We talked about decentralized activities around the theme and
how to access mentoring and rapid grants.
Join us for the next office hour:

Hallo. I'm cross-posting this to a few lists. Please send any questions to
the project's talkpage.
We would like to find two or three language communities who would be good
matches to help to guide some long-term improvements to the lexicographic
data part of Wikidata, and the closely related work in the Wikifunctions
wiki and the Abstract Wikipedia project, over the next few years. We are
looking for communities that are open to trying out new things, and have an
interest in linguistics and coding.
Participating communities will hopefully find that this project will lead
to long-term growth in content in Wikipedia and Wiktionary in and about
their language. See
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikidata:Lexicographical_d…
for more detailed information (including some suggested criteria). Please
help us identify potential good matches.
Thank you!
p.s. A translated/translatable version of this message is on meta-wiki, if
you'd like to share it elsewhere:

Hello - I wanted to submit a notice to the African-Wikimedians Digest.
Would you be so kind as to submit it on my behalf? Thanks very much.
Michelle
Dear Wikimedians,
I want to bring to your attention a Wikiproject grant
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/The_African_Narrative> that
is currently under review submitted by The Africa Narrative, a non-profit
that develops and supports high impact projects focused on African
storytelling, African creatives, and the African cultural and creative
industries.
The AfroCreatives Wikiproject aims to support and mobilize
people/professionals from the African creative sector, as well as
enthusiasts more broadly, to contribute and enhance knowledge on Wikipedia
about Africa’s creative economy. Its inaugural effort will target the film
sectors of Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal with a campaign that will
include trainings and virtual editathons aimed at the general public and
professionals within the creative space.
I hope to have the good fortune of having the Afro-Creatives WikiProject be
part of the African Wikimedian community and with many opportunities to
collaborate with you.
Sincerely,
Michelle van Gilder

Hello all,
We are excited for #WikiForHumanRights -- at the office hours and
afterwards community groups throughout the movement have already connected
with us about organizing. This year we are going to focus on the "right to
a healthy environment" and we need your help!
What can you do?
If you like to organize an event, we have created a list of ideas at:
https://w.wiki/33kh. You can also learn more about kinds of activities from
our last office hour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_QEE60hcFk Keep in
mind that we are support rapid grants to help you go further by means of
financial support rapid grants will be available through April 15 -- please
apply any time during that window through the application process.
If you are organizing an event, please add it to the table at:
https://w.wiki/35gK
We will also have a content-writing challenge with prizes from April 15 -
May 15 you can learn more about the challenge and sign up for the challenge
at: https://w.wiki/35gE
We also have developed a draft list of articles to be created or enriched
with UN Human Rights: https://w.wiki/33ki . We hope these inspire you to
think about what your community could do to fill the gaps on your wikis
about the right to healthy environment: this could include topics related
to human rights, climate or environmental justice, communities impacted by
environmental health issues, or similar.
We encourage working on Wikipedia and on sister projects: Commons,
Wikidata, Wiktionary ... etc.
If you have a question, you can send us an email (Alex Stinson:
astinson(a)wikimedia.org, Michel Bakni: mbakni-ctr(a)wikimedia.org), or you can
attend the support and mentoring meeting we are organizing on Zoom on at 14:00
(GMT) 18 March 2021. [1]

WMSusDev meeting
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Community,
As we announced during December,[1] this year’s WikiForHumanRights campaign
will be arriving for Earth Day this year: April 15-May 15. The theme is
“Right to a Healthy Environment” -- connecting the 20th Birthday “Human”
theme with the global conversations about COVID-19, environmental crisis,
like climate change, and human rights. You can learn more about the theme at
our under-development home page. [2]
The campaign will have two parts: a challenge, like the WikiGap Challenge,
and decentralized digital and in-person events (where COVID-19 risk
assessments allow).
We need your help organizing the decentralized events -- and will be
supporting development of activities through mentoring and rapid grants.
Do you want to be part of organizing? The Campaigns Team at the Wikimedia
Foundation invites you to:
-
the upcoming Wikimedians for Sustainable Development meeting on 21
February at 11:00am UTC [3]
-
Our next virtual office hour on 25 February 2021 at 3:00pm UTC via
zoom.[4]
If you are interested, but can’t attend the meeting: you can also join the
Wikimedians for Sustainable Development communication channels for general
updates [5] or the WikiForHumanRights telegram channel, where we will share
more updates for organizers [6].
Please forward this information to movement organizers who you think will
be interested.
Looking forward to talking with you soon!

Hi everyone,
As a quick follow-up for my previous e-mail, we do have office hours
through Google Meet starting in about 10 minutes for individuals who would
like to meet with the Community Resources team to offer feedback or ask
questions about the new proposal for grants programs managed by the
Community Resources team. Please review this page on Meta for links to join

Dear friends and Wikimedians,
(apologies for cross-posting!)
The Community Resources team announced in January the intention and process
to review its current grants programs (Annual Plan Grants, Simple Annual
Plan Grants, Project Grants and Rapid Grants) to ensure we are aligning
with the strategic direction of the Wikimedia movement, with a focus on
knowledge equity and building a thriving movement[1][2].
Now that we have finished our needs review, key stakeholders discussions,
community brainstorms, and grantee surveys, we are excited to share with
you the draft proposal[3] that has resulted from this work:
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Resources/Grants_Strategy_Relaunc…
>
We are requesting your feedback on how the proposed grant programs would
impact you and how well they align with our movement strategy, which can be
provided in the following ways [4]:
* Complete a feedback form
* Participate in office hours
* Discuss on-wiki
* E-mail the Community Resources team (<communityresources(a)wikimedia.org>)
More information about these options can be found on our feedback page.[4]
After one month when the planned feedback period is over, the Community
Resources team will review all community input and make final adjustments
to complete the redesign. In April 2021, the Community Resources team will
review and incorporate suggested changes and send a final proposal for
endorsement and approval by the leadership of the Wikimedia Foundation.
Working with all our communities to update our grants programs is essential
to ensuring that they are useful and address real needs for our
communities. Thank you for all of the participation that has brought us to
this point. We look forward to the continued engagement in this next step
and listening to your ideas.
On behalf of the Community Resources team,
Chris

Hi Everyone,
I trust you are all doing well. I am announcing a rapid grant proposal we
have submitted about organizing a month-long writing contest to add/improve
articles about days of the week, month and day names on Twi Wikipedia and
English Wikipedia.
We would be very grateful to have your feedback and endorsements about this
project.
