Hello all, and apologies for crossposting!
I hope you are doing well!
As you may have noticed when we announced the partnership in August [1]:
the Wikimedia Foundation is working with the UN Human Rights to help expand
the availability of knowledge about human rights online.
As one of our first collaborations, we are going to be running a campaign
from November 15 - January 30 to add and improve knowledge about human
rights on Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. The initial focus of the
campaign will be on improving articles about topics related to the UN
Declaration of Human Rights and youth standing up for human rights. More
information about the campaign is also available here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights
We would like to invite you to get involved in the campaign in one of
several ways:
Help us build the list!
-
We need your help identifying more topics related to youth involved in
human rights that don’t have articles on Wikipedia or could use further
improvement. We would like to represent many different languages and
geographies in the campaign. To propose topics for the list, see
instructions at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/List#Adding_a_topic_to_t…
Organize an online or offline event!
We need your help finding community leaders from throughout the Wikimedia
to:
-
Host an online campaign on your language Wikipedia! To learn more about
hosting a local topical campaign see the kit here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Organize#Campaign
-
Hold an in person editathon with local human rights organizations or
partners! To learn more, check out the kit here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Organize#Editathon
Promote the campaign starting Dec. 10 for International Human Rights Day!
Help us amplify your efforts around the campaign and publicize it to wide
audiences. We’ll be sharing a communications toolkit (including graphics)
soon with suggestions on reaching out to folks about the campaign.
-
Reach out to local media and supporters: Journalists and the public
can help add momentum to the campaign through storytelling and spreading
the word.
-
Promote the campaign on social media: We’ll be using
#WikiForHumanRights to promote the campaign on social media, when we
increase the communication to the public on 10 December
If you want to help in other ways, let us know on the discuss space
#human-rights tag
<https://discuss-space.wmflabs.org/t/do-you-have-questions-about-organizing-…>
or by emailing Alex Stinson <astinson(a)wikimedia.org and Luisina Ferrante <
educacion(a)wikimedia.org.ar>
If you are interested, let us know by indicating your interest to organize
in the Organize sections linked above!
Note: We are still updating the communications assets for the campaign! To
watch for those materials, add
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Share to your meta
watchlist.
Have questions?
If you have questions, we are going to be hosting an office hour next
Tuesday
<https://discuss-space.wmflabs.org/t/community-office-hour-wikiforhumanright…>,
or you can ask questions on the discuss space #human-rights tag
<https://discuss-space.wmflabs.org/t/do-you-have-questions-about-organizing-…>
.
Looking forward to your engagement with the campaign!

Hello Nkem and Co
Greetings,
I was able to glance through your proposed grants.
As someone who has dedicated time to train over 100 librarians in Nigeria
tertiary institutions on how to use Wikipedia and Wikidata for Library,
Sincerely, I see the project as a very laudable approach that can sync the
embedded knowledge gap among African librarians with respect to Wikimedia
projects ( Wikipedia, Wikidata ,WikiCite and Wikisource) but , in
my opinion, it is not yet time for a grant application.
These are my thoughts
Except I am missing something...
1. The grant doesn't show a project methodology ( means of achieving your
goal)
2. According to the grant, the sums of $60k being the grand total will be
used for the salary of the proposed WIR. I am afraid, you will need to show
us the breakdown of the component of the budget that will finance the
Salary of the WIR and other budgetary items such as cost of organizing a
workshop and training, etc. And if that is not applicable here you will
need to show us how you want to finance these items.
Lastly, I will also like to see your project time line.
Let me stop here until I have an ample time to review the entirety of the
grant.
Once more, you have done a great job.
Thanks

Hi,
I am Nkem Osuigwe. I work with AfLIA (African Library and Information
Associations and Institutions). We recently signed a Memorandum of
Understanding with The Wikimedia Library for training and to get more
Librarians understand the value and importance of Wikipedia as a resource
for information dissemination and research in Africa. One of the terms of
agreement in the MoU is having a progressive course on Wikipedia standards
and processes for Librarians. We have been advised to write a grant
proposal for a Wikipedian in Residence who will help adapt the already
existing curriculum and materials to suit the African information
environment and library ecosystem. The curriculum and materials were
developed by OCLC for an American audience.
Felix Nartey introduced me to this group
I look forward to collaborations between African libraries and Wikipedians
all across the continent.
Also, I strongly believe that we will need support from this Community to
help AfLIA run the proposed training course as one of the success
indicators of the course will be the number of collaborations formed
between libraries and Wikipedians all over the continent.
You may read up about AfLIA -web.aflia.net
We have members(Institutional) in 33 countries in Africa and we hope to
leverage on it to increase the reach and use of Wikipedia.
I look forward to hearing from anyone here.
Thank you.

Hello everyone!
Hope you are all well.
I am so happy to introduce Rudolph Ampofo, who has joined the Wikimedia
Foundation Partnership's team as our new Sub-Saharan Africa
Partnerships Manager.
For the past four years, I have been managing our partnerships across the
two regions of the Middle East and Africa, and I am excited to work
alongside Rudolph to ensure a smooth transition as he takes over our
Sub-Saharan Africa partnerships. I will now be focusing more on building
and maintaining partnerships across the MENA (Middle East North Africa)
region.
Here is some information about Rudolph:
*Rudolph is passionate about impacting lives in rural and marginalized
communities in Africa. He has degrees in Human Resources and Law. After
working with a local HR and management consulting firm, he set up his first
business, a center-based program for children with Autism and other related
disorders (ASD). They have impacted over 100 children with ASD in Kumasi,
Ghana. *
*He later set up Craft Education, which supported Eneza expansion into West
Africa (Ghana & Ivory Coast) and has impacted over 40,000 learners in rural
and marginalized communities via text messaging e-learning platform.
Rudolph also contributed at the strategic level helping Eneza win awards
from GSMA and MIT Solve. Currently, Craft Education is exploring how to use
technology to change access to healthcare, service providers and education
for individuals with ASD in Africa (this is his passion project!). Rudolph
is also excited about work that challenges the equilibrium and changes
lives for the better. He turns into a geek and his eyes light up! He loves
manga and martial arts (former practitioner of TKD and Karate…he is
planning on picking it up again). Husband, learning to cook, likes nice
things, a tech enthusiast (self-taught front-end development and loves
product management). FYI, he really cares about the borders on the excel
sheet! (you would think it’s the world cup).*
Rudolph is based in Accra, Ghana and is working on implementing a
partnerships strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa, with a special focus on
increasing usage, access, and awareness of Wikimedia projects, as well as
the availability of locally relevant content.
Feel free to reach out and welcome Rudolph!
Many thanks,
Jack

Hello folks,
We would like to invite you to apply to the Outreachy and Google Summer of
Code program with the Wikimedia Foundation (a non-profit organization
behind Wikipedia)!
*About the Outreachy program*
Wikimedia will be mentoring ~7 projects in the Outreachy program in the May
to August 2020 round. The initial applications are due February 25th at 4
pm UTC.
Apply today: https://www.outreachy.org/apply/
Outreachy offers three-month internships to work remotely in Free and Open
Source Software (FOSS) projects with experienced mentors. The internships
may include programming, user experience, documentation, illustration and
graphic design, or data science.
Outreachy internships run twice a year – from May to August and December to
March. Interns are paid a stipend of $5,500 USD for the three months of
work. They also have a $500 USD stipend to travel to conferences and
events. Interns often find employment after their internship with Outreachy
sponsors or in jobs that use the skills they learned during their
internship.
Outreachy is open to both students and non-students. Outreachy expressly
invites the following people to apply:
* Women (both cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people.
* Anyone who faces under-representation, systematic bias, or discrimination
in the technology industry in their country or residence is invited to
apply.
* Residents and nationals of the United States of any gender who are
Black/African American, Hispanic/Latin@, Native American/American Indian,
Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander.
*About the Google Summer of Code program*
Wikimedia is planning to mentor 8-10 projects in 2020’s Google Summer of
Code (GSoC) program. Beginning February 20th, pending Wikimedia’s
acceptance as a mentoring organization, applicants can begin discussing
ideas with the mentors!
The student application will be due on March 31st 18:00 UTC:
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/
Google Summer of Code now in its 16th year, is Google's summer program for
university students who want to get involved in open source software. Over
15,960 students from 109 countries have already participated. Google Summer
of Code is a unique program that pairs students with mentors who introduce
them to the open-source community and provide guidance while they work on
real-world open-source projects during their summer break from university.
Projects cover a wide range of fields including: Cloud, Operating Systems,
Graphics, Medicine, Programming Languages, Robotics, Science, Security and
many more. It's a highly competitive program (and this year is expected to
be even bigger than last year), so don't wait until the last minute to
prepare!
*About the Wikimedia Foundation*
The Wikimedia Foundation <https://wikimediafoundation.org/> is the
nonprofit organization that hosts and operates Wikipedia and the other
Wikimedia
free knowledge projects
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/our-work/wikimedia-projects/>. Our vision
is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all
knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute
something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to
access that knowledge, free of interference. We host the Wikimedia
projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing
Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make
Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and
free knowledge to thrive.
