A big warm hello to my fellow African Wiki Community Members!
It's been almost a year since some of us met up at Wiki Indaba 2014. We all
left with a sense of purpose on how to expand Wikimedia in our community,
and had great ideas on how to increase the number of editors on Wikipedia.
Some personal pledges were made, and there have been several initiatives
from African countries over the last couple of months.
We are excited about the future of the Wikimedia movement in Africa, and
will be working hard in the coming months to expand on the foundations laid
at Wiki Indaba. We will of course need your input and feedback and will be
reaching out to you soon.
For those attending the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin this year, please
feel free to join us at the African meetup
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2015/Social_events#Them
atic.2Fregional.2Flanguage-specific_meetups> where we will touch on what
has transpired this year, and discuss initiatives for going forward. We
will share notes of this meeting via meta for those who cannot attend.
There have been several discussions lately regarding the frequency of Wiki
Indaba gatherings. Considering that the African community is relatively
small, the suggestion at the 2014 conference was that such a gathering would
take place every 3 years, with Tunisia being selected as the next host.
Wikimedia ZA has not applied for funding to host an Indaba within the
upcoming financial year, but we will be happy to assist in applying for
funding from the Wikimedia Foundation to host future events.
We will reach out again at the beginning of June to map the way forward.

Hello
For the set up of Wiki Loves Africa, we need your help for translation.
What we need is
* Arabic
* Any relevant African language
I summarized what is missing here
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2015#Tran…
It would be great if at least some of the portal pages were translated
(at a minimum the landing page) in arabic. It takes a bit of time, but
not so much...
As for the site notice... the texts to translate are ONLY a couple of
sentences. That is EASY and quick to do (just drop the translation on
the discussion page).
Thanks for your help
Florence
Hi friends
I have put all the designs we have received in a dropbox :
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b82dcujzmoctcdd/AABISNY0HIKk9BVwa_e-tRGGa?dl=0
You may find there
* a flyer
* a poster
* emailer
More documents have been put there:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2015_marketin…,
in particular
* logo
* stickers
There are issues with the translated French versions. Please read more
in French
Note that the flyer is displaying similar logos on both sides. This is
actually not really a bug, but rather a feature. You can easily replace
the duplicate with the user group logo and/or local partners logos when
appropriate. Same of the green url (which may be replaced by the user
group facebook group for example).
Personal suggestion :
the second page of the leaflet is quite talkative when it comes to
explaining "how to join the contest" (middle left). In my opinion, it
can be shortened. In case you want to distribute a leaflet giving
information about local events, you probably can stick that information
there.

Bonjour
J'ai mis tous les designs que nous avons reçu dans une boîte dropbox :
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b82dcujzmoctcdd/AABISNY0HIKk9BVwa_e-tRGGa?dl=0
On y trouve en particulier
* le dépliant
* un poster
* bas d'email
D'autres documents ont été mis ici:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2015_marketin…,
en particulier
* logo
* auto-collants
Florence
Well done Nigeria!! Other African countries will follow suit, hopefully.

This is to notify the African Wikimedians mailing list of a draft proposal we are working on at
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Ghana_Editor_Study>
As part of the interventions to address the decreasing levels of participation in our community, this proposal intends to study a cross-section of Ghanaian Wikipedia editors to assess factors that influence their editing patterns and seek out possible ways to increase their activity.
All of your opinions and input are most welcome.

Hi friends
I will be travelling for the next three days so wanted to give you a
quick heads-up on the matter of communication.
*1) Portal page on Commons. *
It is here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa
There is still work on it to do but a good part of the content is now
there.
Please pay attention to this page in particular:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2015/Local_eve…
Amongst the questions we got last year was a recurrent one from "non
wikipedians" (or newbies). What is going on in my country ?
I suggest that you add there any event you organize, with appropriate
links (to Facebook, your site, an email...)
Note that there is no reason this be limited to the financially
supported countries. If an individual (or a couple of individuals) want
to simply propose a "get together in a bar", that would be great as well
Heck... I think I will propose a "get together and have a drink" in a
bar in Marseille-France. I just need to ask my neighbour (from Cameroon)
to indicate me an appropriate place to do so ;)
Also, please consider adding here the names of those who would be
willing to be press contact for their country:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2015/Media#Pre…
*2) Website*
We are in the process of archiving last year website. It will still be
available, but at a new url.
The new website will then be set up. I will send an email later to
invite those who do not yet have access and want to send me their info
so that I can create an account for them.
*3) Leaflets, banners and such*
A designer has received the brief and has already worked on them. We
gave our feedback on the first iteration. I hope we will have the second
iteration soon.
We already agreed on the "color" set. Here is the basic mock-up for the
sticker (it will give an idea of the colors :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sticker02.pdf)
I'll post the second iteration as soon as we get it and hopefully this
will be the last one.
I posted here the text proposed on the poster and on the leaflet:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Africa#Text_on_p…
If you have suggestions, that is the right time to do it. If anyone want
to translate, that will be great
Of course, we will post the templates so that you can do your own
versions if desired (adding a user-group logo for example)
*4) Prizes*
We brainstormed and here is the result !
1st prize: a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 + An Africa-published book +
Mystery gifts from the Wikimedia Store + print of the participant
winning picture
2nd prize: US$300 Amazon gift + An Africa-published book + Mystery gifts
from the Wikimedia Store + print of the 2nd prize picture
3rd prize: US$200 Amazon gift + An Africa-published book + Mystery gifts
from the Wikimedia Store + print of the 3rd prize picture
Community Prize: US$200 Amazon gift voucher + An Africa-published book
+Mystery gifts from the Wikimedia Store + print of the Community Prize
and yes, you can communicate on those.
*5) Social media*
No change http://www.facebook.com/wikilovesafrica and
http://www.twitter.com/wikilovesafrica
Follow us... post... retweet... tell us about your own SM pages so that
we can share what you post as well.
Cheers
Flo
Dear Intrepid African Wikipedians
I NEED YOUR HELP!
I have pledged to start the #100wikidays [1] challenge. My challenge is aimed at ensuring the remarkable African women that the text books, news and history books have failed to celebrate are covered on Wikipedia.
Please tell me your nominations ... Which female and African (ancient, historical and modern) innovator, leader, academic, scientist, activist, artist inspire you? Who do you think should be celebrated … (please send me more than 1)
I get started on the 1st September. Looking forward to it!!
Oh, and feel free to be part of the challenge!!
warmest
Isla

Commons licenses".
/
Elles sont toutes deux disponibles ici:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_Belgium_publications
Anne-Laure
