A big warm hello to my fellow African Wiki Community Members!
It's been almost a year since some of us met up at Wiki Indaba 2014. We all
left with a sense of purpose on how to expand Wikimedia in our community,
and had great ideas on how to increase the number of editors on Wikipedia.
Some personal pledges were made, and there have been several initiatives
from African countries over the last couple of months.
We are excited about the future of the Wikimedia movement in Africa, and
will be working hard in the coming months to expand on the foundations laid
at Wiki Indaba. We will of course need your input and feedback and will be
reaching out to you soon.
For those attending the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin this year, please
feel free to join us at the African meetup
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2015/Social_events#Them
atic.2Fregional.2Flanguage-specific_meetups> where we will touch on what
has transpired this year, and discuss initiatives for going forward. We
will share notes of this meeting via meta for those who cannot attend.
There have been several discussions lately regarding the frequency of Wiki
Indaba gatherings. Considering that the African community is relatively
small, the suggestion at the 2014 conference was that such a gathering would
take place every 3 years, with Tunisia being selected as the next host.
Wikimedia ZA has not applied for funding to host an Indaba within the
upcoming financial year, but we will be happy to assist in applying for
funding from the Wikimedia Foundation to host future events.
We will reach out again at the beginning of June to map the way forward.

RE: African-Wikimedians Digest, Vol 7, Issue 60, Participation in WIkiindaba
I found it interesting to read the discussion linked in Asafs short post. As the Indaba was my first WMF-event ever I wondered about the several people I met who obviously never or only very rarely had ever done edits or written articles (one of my small-talk questions was: What do you write about?). Of course it is extremely impolite on such occasions to question the value of the presence of others with whom you share a desk or a meal so I just kept my thoughts to myself... But yeah, questions came..
>From the reply I do not yet quite understand how everybody came about (a "country representative" whose en:account showed not 1 edit, as far as I remember...). Was there a certain number of edits to show, or edits over a certain period of time?
OK, interesting discussion
Cheers - Kipala

Hello all,
I took few images at the glamwiki event here in the hague, and all can be
found here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:GLAMWIKI_2015_NL_nkansahrexford
It was lovely 'wizardman' didn't apply his magic banning/blocking wand at
my account on Commons.
Uploaded the images quickly so before he comes from his wiki-break, ooh
dear, they're already on commons before he bans me from Wikimedia World
once and for all

Dear superb Wikipedians …
As most of you know, the GLAM WIKI conference is taking place at the end of this week in the Netherlands, organised by Wikimedia NL. The programme committee came up with the excellent idea of challenging all delegates that are attending - and anyone who wants to get involved remotely - to create or improve the articles about important cultural institutions in the “global south”.
To do this, it would be good to have a list of the institutions / cultural practices that should be featured in Wikipedia - and we need your help!! Please could you add the name of 2-4 institutions or practices in your country that you think are very important culturally and whose articles need either creating or expanding. Please put down your ideas for GLAMs that need writing about on this page ...https://nl.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM-WIKI_2015/Challenge <https://nl.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM-WIKI_2015/Challenge>
Thanks so much, and I hope to see some of you very soon!
warmest
