Dear Members,
We received an email from Nicole Ebber from the Movement Strategy Core Team to inform us that they have chosen Tunis to hold on September 20-22 a "harmonization sprint" where working group members come together to harmonize their groups' recommendations to one coherent set of recommendations for structural changes in our movement.
Nicole suggested in her email to schedule a social activity on the 20th of September to connect with our group during an evening of local food and culture.
The event will be organised by us and funded via a grant that we will submit to the foundation once we assessed the budget related to this social event.
In order to be able to plan this event I would like to invite you to fill this forms as soon as you can if you are interested to attend the event.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeqYSN2CWVHV6lHqnnQjJOeAEE2cufQof2…
We expect to have 50 people from Strategy Groups to attend this social event with us.
Also if you have suggestions where to have this social event and enjoy a good local food and culture with our fellow wikimedians please don't hesitate to share your ideas.
The members of the strategy groups will be hosted in the Gammarth El Mouradi Hotel and they don't have a bus to move far from there so if we are going to choose a place not in the hotel area we need to think to hire a bus for them or ask the strategy group to do that by their own.
I think that maybe it will be easy if we can plan something near to the hotel e.g. Bab Bahr, Yuka, Jobi .... we can contact these places to privatise an area. Nevertheless if you have other ideas please share them.
Also if someone from the group would like to take the lead to organise this event, please raise your hand !
For the members that are not in Tunis, they are of course welcomed and we will make sure to take into account the expenses related to their transportation to come to Tunis from their Tunisian cities.
Final comment: since the event is in the evening (~ 20:00) maybe we (Tunisian members) can gather before that to discuss the bylaws shared recently.
About the "harmonization sprint"
Several wikimedians from different countries and organisations will be present at this event where they will try to harmonize their groups' recommendations to one coherent set of recommendations.
We expect around ~40 people from the working group, the core team, the WMF and external support to participate in that event so a total of around 60 people.
The event is invitation only thus the purpose to have a separate social event with our group.
The Strategy Core Team considered several cities and they decide to hold this event in Tunis as they kept very good souvenirs from WikiIndaba last year and this is an honor for our country and our group.
Since some attendees need a visa, the organisers of the event asked CLibre to provide some invitation letters which CLibre did promptly (Thanks CLibre!).
ThanksYamen
Hi all,
I know it is too early to discuss WikiConvention, but I just got an idea:
How about we organize an online editing contest, WikiLovesTunis or
WikiLoveTunisia, similar to WikiLovesYerevan
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Yerevan_International_edit-a-thon>
that happened last year, during which participants wrote articles about
Yereva related topics, and in our case Tunis maybe, and then the top 10
contributors got a free flight and accommodation for a weekend in Yerevan.
In our case, we can give the top 3 for example scholarships to participate
in WikiConvention.
The project will cost nothing apart of the scholarships that will be part
of the the funds for the convention.
What do you think of the idea? I remember the output of the contest for
Yerevan, and it was amazing: I think around 5000 articles in maybe 50
languages in a month!! When it comes to free trips, people get very excited
to edit and write.
I can work on it in January if the idea is accepted.
Have a nice day,
Houssem

Hi all,
I crossed today accidently a post through which I discovered our UG is
organizing WLM this year.
I am a bit surprised why this was not discussed before or shared. We are
still doing the same mistakes even after aknowledging them :(
I personally think we could pick a better place for the photographt walk.
The medina of Tunis has a lot of photos on commons, and it could be more
useful to cover a new less known site..
Good luck for the tour this week-end.
Houssem

Bravo Houcem

Merci

Chers amis,

Greetings!
Apologies for cross-posting. After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000. About 9 in-person events were also organised for the edit-a-thon in different parts of the world.
The contest is organized by a Wikimedia project called "The AfroCine Project",[1] which is dedicated to improving the coverage of the history, works, people, places, and events, that are associated with the cinema, theatre and arts of Africa, African countries, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.
If you would love to join this exciting event, please list your username as a participant on the English Wikipedia contest page.[2] If you would love to lead this contest for your country or community, please list your name in the coordinators page here.[3] The rapid grants team would be accepting proposals throughout October and November, in case you'd need funds to run local edit-a-thons or some other activities related to this event. Upon listing your name on the coordinators' page, you'd be contacted to talk about the resources you'd need to run the event in your community. You can also contact me directly for any clarifications.
Finally, We also need volunteers to handle some aspects of the AfroCine project. These aspects include:
1. Community Liaison: This role essentially involves closely engaging with local communities to support their activities within the scope of Afrocine.
2. Communications: This involves the communications aspects of the project. Sharing relevant information on mailing lists and social media would be the responsibility of this person.
3. MAC Jury: This role involves joining the jury of Months of African Cinema contest. We need as many people as we can get :).
4. Tools: Going forward, we would need relevant tools to better track the metrics and also analyse the general impact of these events. We are calling for Wikimedia volunteers who can navigate wikimedia tools that can be useful for the project.
If you would love to help with any of these roles, or some other roles that have not been mentioned, please contact me directly.
If you have further questions, complaints, suggestions, etc., please reach out to me personally or right here on the mailing list or the project talkpages.
Thank you!
Sam Oyeyele.

Dear All,
I have been contacted by a friend Ahmed Medien (who is also member with us in this mailing list and very motivated to contribute to wikimedia projects in Tunisia) to inform me about a new project that he is running and asking whether our community are keen to help and take part of it.
The project aims to fight fake news by collecting several information/news from different sources, analyse them by a group of journalists and then publish the checked and correct ones. The process will be done via an open source platform that is going to ease the process (please see the below link for more information).
Since in Wikimedia, fake news is something that we are very keen to fight and the result of the process can be very helpful in our projects, I encourage you to contact Ahmed (ahmed.medien(a)gmail.com ) if you would like to contribute to this project.
