Hello all,
Although I will not be attending Wikimania this year, I have put my name down to be part of the Online Team.
I have a few questions as I will be monitoring IRC, maintaining the wiki pages and watching streams from my laptop at home during the event.
1) Is there anything else I can do to help without being at Wikimania? 2) Will I need to know any further information than what I already know to be a part of the Online Team?
I am on IRC most of the time as TheLetterE or TheLetterE-WiFi if you need to speak with me.
Kind regards,
E English Wikipedia e.wikipedia@gmail.com
You are welcomed as a member of the online team.
1) Yes. If you know any foreign language, you can help translate the wiki. 2) I don't know exactly how much do you know about Wikimania, however if you have any particular question, you can ask any member of the local Wikimania team.

Thank you for your warm welcome Meno. I will try to do some translations on the wiki over the next few weeks and see how that goes.
In relation to that, is there anything I can do regarding operation of the IRC channels or the wiki?
Thanks in advance,

hopefully the online team will be involved in streaming and IRC channels, basically stuff for people who are not attending and can be done online.
during the event the IRC channels will be absolute mayhem and people who are familiar with IRC will need to be there to answer questions to new people and kick people who are just there to cause trouble. also the wiki will be constantly updated by people at the event who post and then go off to do something, so the online team will be there to fiddle around make it look good and fix it all up during the event.
before the event we will be discussing features needed and how we can improve on stuff from last year such as the streams and getting videos online to view in the quickest time possible to good standards, and hopefully these discussion will start soon.
thanks for joining the team, and look forward to seeing you round in the future,

Hi, normally the translators for Wikimania are busy during the early spring (for website setup) and the summer (catching several updates: call for participants, splendid speakers list and details about accommodation, sometimes local sightseeing info). So for now I'd recommend you to visit the last year website http://wikimania2007.wikimedia.org, what kind of information and tasks are required.
And you said you're willing to help translations - which language are you working on? Out of curiosity.
Translation team needs of course translators but also coordinators. A look to the pervious workspace http://wikimania2007.wikimedia.org/WM:T may give you a grasp of our dirty laundry :D It may include to check the progress of localization by language, to contact language specific Wikimedia community for asking for help or to call for help on global Wikimedia communication channel like this list or other Wikimedia mailing list. For this area, linguistic skills are not necessary (still preferable though), but general understanding about translation and moreover the knowledge about the conference are expected. Recent work of Casey for Wikimedia Foundation website is imo an excellent example how English (only) speaking people can help translation/localization team.
Cheers,
