Dear Wikimaniacs,
Hello again from the 2013 local team for a break from the Wikimania 2014 bid discussions!
Every candidate applying for Wikimania 2013 scholarships should have received an email in the past two weeks saying either their application was unsuccessful, or their application is still being considered. Commiserations to all unsuccessful candidates - we hope we can still see you at Wikimania and around the Wikimedia projects.
This year we received over 1200 applications for scholarships; about 700 made it past the first round. It is expected that a total of about 125 WMF scholarships and 75 chapter scholarships will be allocated to the best applicants among applicants who advanced past the first round. Candidates should hear about the decisions regarding their applications by the end of April.
Don't hesitate to contact the Wikimania 2013 local team at *wikimania-p [at] wikimedia.hk* or the scholarship team at *wikimania-scholarships [at] wikimedia.org* .
With best wishes, Deryck Chan Global engagement coordinator, Wikimania 2013 / Wikimedia Hong Kong On behalf of the Wikimania 2013 local team and scholarship committee
Derick, thanks for the update, and for considering me to the scholarship second round.
Regards.

Goodness, that is a lot indeed! We should find something to do with the other applications -- they are likely great people whose energies could be brought together in other ways. The limitations of a physical conference are sometimes fun but not always necessary. SJ

Hello from WMVE,
Congratulations for the excellent work you are doing local team Wikimedia Hong Kong.
Right now I have not received any mail, I understand that they have been in high demand.
Many applications to stay outside, and many others simply can not attend physical hardship (physical disability) or monetary disability. It would be interesting, remote participation mechanisms that technology can afford.
A hug.

Hey Deryck,
thanks for the update. I see that several sponsors have been added to the website, and "early bird" registration started. Keep up the good work.
I would like to stress the importance of concluding the scholarschip application as soon as possible. Ticket prices are going up already, and by the end of April early bird registration will have finished. An early response also helps planning other things.

Dear Maarten and everyone else with similar concerns,
We'll of course hurry up! The scholarship committee has rated all applications and are now arranging for WMF and relevant chapters to pick their scholars based on our recommendations.
*If you will attend Wikimania 2013 regardless of whether you receive a scholarship* (I presume this will be a significant proportion of partial scholarship applicants), *we'd advise that you register and book your flights before the scholarship decisions.*
Scholarship recipients will always be entitled to register with the early bird discount, even if they register after the early bird discount deadline.
For full scholarship recipients, the full cost of their return flight will be covered by the scholarship-granting organisation.
This leaves partial scholarship applicants whose attendance depends on whether they get the scholarship - apologies, we'll hurry up as I said before!
