Hi all,
As I was not able to figure out who is responsible for what at Wikimania 2007 planning and my last request did not achieve to get to the last Wikimania Taipai Team meeting I would like to repeat my question:
1. What will accomodation cost at Wikimania 2007 location (CTOYAC)?
2. How many days you can stay? Can you come earlier and stay longer if you want?
Please add the answer at http://wikimania2007.wikimedia.org/wiki/Venue
And update the misleading list http://wikimania2007.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Team_and_Volunteers
Greetings, Jakob
Hi, Jakob,
Sorry for late reply.
We are still doing our budget. As when we bid for hosting Wikimania 2007, we have found some sponsorship to cover the meals and accommodation, the accommodation cost is just for avoiding waste.
Generally in Taipei, the room rate in an ordinary hotel is between NTD 2500 to NTD 4000 (USD75-120) per night, and Wikimania accommodation cost will be under $20 per night. We will announce the rate in detail when the registration is open.
We have ordered the CTOYAC rooms from Aug.1 to Aug. 5, which means everybody has to check out on Aug. 6. After the Wikimania, there will be other activities held in CTOYAC, so it is nearly impossible to order more days. We will try to get more other hotel information for those who want to stay longer.
And I have to say sorry again, the original registration manager left the preparation team. That's why we responded lately. We are trying to find an appropriate person to take charge of this super important matter, and of course as soon as possible. The registration system and website are still ongoing, so don't worry for us. Littlebtc and Alex are still here. :D
Sincerely yours,
THD

Hi THD,
I really hope you can find either before either after the wikimania at least a few days chep accomodation, as usually ticktets are cheaper when you stay at leas a week. And of course it would be the easiest to be able to stay in the same room that time, as moving is always asking time yu'd like to spend on other things, such as looking around on taiwan :)

Regarding accomodations....
I think it would be a good idea that the board organise a board meeting either immediately before or immediately after Wikimania. This may be a meeting with some invited non-board members.
I would like to know who is exactly in charge of accomodation, so that we can see what are the accomodation possibilities in the days before or after Wikimania.
Thanks

Also some committees, chapters ... In Boston due to heavy schedule Comcom gave up to hold its own meeting, though almost more than half were there. It was a pity indeed.
Btw I heard there was a plan of organisational workshop along HackingDays. How does it go along? It vanished?

There was certainly a lot of discussion about this in the informal gatherings after Wikimania Boston. Some people did remark that a large proportion of those attending Wikimania were not Wikipedians themselves, and that they would enjoy at least one day of brainstorming/problem-solving open only to active Wikipedians. Unlike Hacking Days this would focus on non-technical issues. I don't know if it could happen at the same time; that depends on how many people would want to attend both.
An expanded Board meeting would probably fit in best after Wikimania when attendees could wrap together the ideas that they have picked up at Wikimania itself as well as whatever other meetings are organized.
The effect of this on accomodations is that some will be needed both before and after Wikimania. Some people may want to arrive a day earlier to adjust to jetlag, or could have their travel affected by the timing of airline connections. Since Taiwan is an island the latter may be more of a factor than it was in the last two years. I don't expect that we would have the same bargain accomodations for these extensions as there are for the main part of Wikimania, but if enough people want to stay longer perhaps block rates are available.
Ec
I'm working in the catering industry, so let me give you a "professionnal" point of view, if you want a more precise one I'll need more informations (as how much tourists are heading to Taipei in August :) )
First of all, in order to have block rates you will need to have a good idea on how many nights, for how many personn you will need. The more accurate the estimations are, the easier it is to talk about price.
You will have to set before few things as: single or two bedded rooms, including/excluding breakfasts.
An other thing is giving a guarantee. Let me explain, on individual reservations it is asked to have CreditCard number/society fax/ Pre paiement to make the booking, sometimes they accept booking without guarantee but with a 6pm deadline (wich would be a problem in our case). For groups bookings they ask for a guarantee, without any gurantee they will, normally, not make the booking. Moreover if you want to talk about having special rates Otherwise having special rates will be harder.
But you can propose them something else, than a guarantee, something they could like.
Ask for a "block booking". It's slightly different from a group booking. As soon as you have a good estimation about how many night/room you would need, call hotels to talk about the rates and tell them each participant will make his own booking on the block booking. So they will ask individual guarantees to each participant. The only thing with block booking is they will put a deadline, something like 1month or 15days before check-in they won't accept any new reservations on the block booking.
I don't speak chinese, but if you want I can call/mail some hotels, and talk rates with them.
Hi, Anthere,
Daucter just agreed to be responsible for the registration (including accommodation), and he will answer the question about the accommodation of board meeting. Originally he is only responsible for the venue things, and we lost communication with the original registration coordinator. Thanks for your patience.
