Hello all We want to use some of videos of Wikimania 2013 sessions in an upcoming event but still and after four months [1] it hasn't been uploaded yet (I searched in youtube and wikimania2013 wiki).
Can someone give me an date for uploading? or Am I wrong and it has been published somewhere I didn't notice?

Hi Amir,
I just asked. The videos are all 1080p and as big as 800 gb so it's stuck there. Perhaps you can tell me what do you need and will try to give the related clips first.
you can find footage in the main hall here. http://new.livestream.com/socreclive/wikimania

Stuck there where? Why can't you just upload them on archive.org and let their system do the necessary conversions/other users download and edit them as needed?

Kris - thanks for the update!
How can other video-fans help? There are people with editing skills & people who have uploaded to Internet Archive before who could contribute time.
Warmly, SJ

It should be a bid criteria in the future for the host team to have a contractor capture video and make it available in a widely accessible manner. Time after time volunteers take on this burden but fail to follow through once the conference is over, and of course there is no accountability or after the fact alternative.
I agree with Nathan. Just like how some important aspects of the whole WM can be outsourced, the video shooting and post-processing/production can be outsourced.

And don't forget to specify what 'accessible' means in the contract. We have also had at least two wikimanias with contractors who failed to make it widely accessible afterwards.

For the case of Wikimania 2013, we did outsource video-recording and streaming to SocRec, a local video journalism group. The streamed videos are still available on the SocRec website, and they left a HDD with all the footage at the end of Wikimania.
A 3-9 month delay between the end of Wikimania and the uploading of videos has been the case for many past Wikimanias. One of the main concerns is cost: it would be considerably more expensive to contract the filming company to do all the post-production.
If enough Wikimaniacs think it is important to have the videos available promptly, then it may be an idea for WMF to set aside funding for someone to work in the WMF datacenter after Wikimania to process and upload the videos... (I say in the datacenter rather than as part of the recording contract, because as many WM13 attendees have found, average upload speed from HK to WMF servers is less than 10kB/s)

I think it's just wikimania 2013 that publishing videoes is an issue. I gave you an example in wikimania 2012 that video of the session has been published in youtube less than one month after the wikimania. (see my first e-mail) am I wrong and that video published more than one month after wikimania 2012? I looked for "history" tab in that link but it's youtube :D On Dec 14, 2013 1:29 AM, "Deryck Chan" deryckchan@wikimedia.hk wrote:

No, there were issues with 2012 as well. While videos uploading were began late August, it wasn't until 22 December before (all except three) of the videos were available on YouTube. The closing ceremony were uploaded end of Jan / 1st Feb this year.

Even if - and I stress if - all else fails at WM2014, we will torrent them from the WMUK office for people to grab.

You can buy a 1.5TB drive for about $60 and shipping it from HK to the US should not cost more than $20. That should be in the budget of WMHK, shouldn't it? From there the raw footage could be uploaded to commons. *Temporal media fragments* links to the videos could probably replace most of the editing and those could be created by community members. At least that would give us access to the footage. Daniel

I have trouble believing this given that HK is one of the main network exhange points in the world, but is is not relevant: you don't need to use an average connection. If your ISP is crap and uses an overloaded transpacific link or whatever, ask someone else who has a better traceroute results. Given [1] + [2] + [3], upload from any university in HK should be rather fast at least to archive.org, I hope.

I think this video issue was resolved some time ago.
Since its a volunteer work, persons who wanna watch the videos are forced to compromise even if it'll be ready the following year.
Someone has volunteered, so until his or her time permits, ALL the videos won't be ready to watch at least for the end user.
@lodewijk, that's how I understood your last reply to my previous message in some thread past. Kindly correct me if I'm wrong.
I think Derrick can clarify things more as well.
