Dear all,
We are looking for members of the 2018 Wikimania program committee.
The committee will help put together the program and schedule for
Wikimania 2018, to be held on July 18-22 in Cape Town, South Africa.
https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania
Committee member responsibilities include helping promote the call for
presentations, recruiting speakers, and reviewing program
submissions. Review dates this year will be in the March-April timeframe
.
P
rogram committee members
will need to c
ommit to having availability
for reviewing submissions and weekly meetings during this time.
Themes of the conference include the advancement of Free Knowledge,
the role of academic and cultural institutions within the movement, privacy
and rights, and the role of technology to further those objectives.
Wikimania 2018
will specifically focus on the gaps - gender, cultural, demographic and
knowledge -
and strategies for reducing them.
If you are a Wikimedian interested in building a great Wikimania
based around the above theme
, you
are welcome to apply! We are especially looking for committee members
with experience with (one or more of) sister projects, non-English
speaking communities, technical projects, or GLAM and education
projects.
Please let us know if you are interested by contacting
wikimania-program@lists. wikimedia.org with your name, interest, and
availability. We will be forming the committee quickly.
Thank you,
Liam Wyatt, Emna Mizouni, and Felix Nartey
Program Committee Co-Chairs, Wikimania ‘18
Dear all
The organisation of Wikimania 2018 in Cape Town is moving along. The co-chairs of the program committee and scholarship committee have been established. They will be putting together their committee in the coming month. We have invited them to use also this mailing list to introduce themselves and let the community know if they need volunteers. Thanks to the team for the good work!
Meanwhile we have received a number of proposal for Wikimania 2019. We are currently collecting information about the different locations to take a decision by January.
All the best
Iolanda/iopensa, on behalf of the Wikimania Committee

Big part of recipients still have not submitted anything.

Hi all,
while telling my WMDE colleagues what great highlights and wonderful
sessions happened at Wikimania, I was trying to find *any* recording of
"The Big Open", the conversation/panel between Katherine, Ryan Merkley
(Creative Commons), and Mark Surman (Mozilla).
As I didn't find anything: Did someone take notes? Recorded anything? It's
not even listed on
https://wikimania2017.wikimedia.org/wiki/All_Session_Notes
Thank you
Cornelius

Hi all,
I'm pleased to share Wikipedia Connection's annual report for the 2016-2017
school year.
<
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Connection/Annual_Reports…
>
Wikipedia Connection (<
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Connection>) is a student
organization at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, USA. The
group, run entirely by students with faculty support, hosts edit-a-thons,
workshops, presentations, photo hunts, and more on campus. The 2016-2017
report summarizes all the year's events, which brought in > 130 campus
participants through the year.
In addition to Wikipedia Connection, there have been Wikipedia student
organizations at Michigan University, Cambridge, National Taiwan
University, Pune, and a few more places. Wikipedia student organizations
are relatively lowkey on the global scale. Hopefully this report showcases
some of the things that can be done with universities - I think there's a
lot of potential for Wikipedia student groups around the world, and
documenting the process of setting up and running Wikipedia student
organizations is a project I'm planning for the near future.
Thanks,
