Hello all,
For those who have not heard, Thursday, July 12th is GLAM Night Out at the
beautiful Newseum in Washington DC.
Consumer Reports, thanks to their recent partnership with Wikimedia and
their Wikipedian in Residence Lane Rasberry, has partnered with the
GLAM-Wiki US community to throw a fabulous party at the Newseum during
Wikimania.
This will be the launch of the GLAM-Wiki US Consortium, a forthcoming
network of GLAM professionals, organizations, and Wikipedians. The event
includes a reception and networking event for Wikipedians, GLAM
professionals, and other nonprofit and media professionals, followed by a
media panel discussion on conflicts of interest in science and medicine.
We encourage all Wikipedians involved in or interested in GLAM to attend.
This will be a fun time to connect with the GLAM-Wiki community and network
with GLAM professionals and beyond.
Please see the Wikimania page for information:
http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_Night_Out
The event is free but registration is required: http://bit.ly/RSVPnewseum
Also, don't forget that the Wikipedia Loves Libraries workshop will be held
on Wednesday:
http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Loves_Libraries
Please distribute as you'd like and we hope to see you there!

Hi,
I'm putting together all the details for my trip before I leave in a
couple of days, and one detail I'd like to have is the conference
emergency phone number. This page says it is still "TBD":
http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Address_book/Emergency
Can it be determined soon, please?
Thanks!
Join OSM mappers, Wikimedians and other locals for a mapping party next
Sunday, July 15th at Congressional Cemetery.
The cemetery is just an empty green blob in OpenStreetMap, but it's rich in
history, monuments, and numerous politicians and notable people are buried
there. You will also see QR codes there! The QR codes link to Wikipedia
articles about these people. We need a nice map to go with the QR codes.
We will meet at 10 a.m. outside the cemetery at Potomac Avenue & E St SE.
Optionally you can meet us at 9 am at the GWU Marvin Center lobby and we
can ride over together.
In the afternoon, we will return to the GWU Marvin Center where we can
enter the data we collected into OpenStreetMap.
No GPS is required but bring one if you have one (or more to share). We
will have some extras and walking papers.
RSVP here: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/3840264334 (or you are welcome
to just show up)
Cheers,
Katie

Hello Wikimania 2012 attendees,
Capital Bikeshare, a bikesharing service in Washington, DC, has kindly provided us with 10 one-day passes. We have set up a little contest where Wikimania attendees can win between 1 and 4 one-day passes, which would provide the 1st place winner with free bicycle rides through all of Wikimania + the Unconference. We are accepting entries through July 11 at 5pm. Please visit here for more details and to enter: http://blog.wikimediadc.org/2012/07/leave-a-comment-get-a-free-ride/

Hi,
Although there is a link to the general Directions on the library website,
I'll be great if someone can write the directions from the majors locations
(the venue, State Plaza Hotel, the hostel..) to the library...
Thanks,
Itzik

Reply-To:
Security at AMS asked me if I had proof of invitation or etc to
Wikimania on me. They let me through anyway, but in case of eventuality,
it might be useful to take along a hardcopy of your wikimania
confirmation.

All countries have visa issues, and visa is a major consideration when choosing a location for wikimania (or at least was a major consideration this year when Hong Kong was chosen). It was also a major consideration, and was taken into account when DC was chosen. There is only so much a local team can do about this, and usually the best solution is for the local team to have close contacts with the relevant consular officer, and for the attendees to apply for visa as early as possible. The only true solution is diversifying location for holding the conference and this was indeed done the past years.
I do not think a permanent WF Wikimania team is a feasible or a successful option. An advise may be given, and is welcome, but it is for the local bidding team to do the work.
I plan to lead a discussion during the Unconference about bidding for Wikimania, and preparing for one, and invite you all to attend.
