Hoi, Sorry but its name is a pun as well as named after a bacterium. I do think we can be overly concerned with feelings, it is not necessarily a good thing. Thanks, GerardM

On the other side it's not necessarily a good thing not to be enough ... I must admit I'm disturbed by this name when I read it. But I like the tool. We had arguments on whether or not using it on frwiki, I'm surprised this has not been raised as a bad faith argument against its usage, actually. I wonder if this could have been an uncountious influencer for community ... Le 14 sept. 2015 05:48, "Gerard Meijssen" gerard.meijssen@gmail.com a écrit :

Hi John,
given that the premise of your email is factually incorrect (as listeria is a pun referring to lists, sharing the name with a family of bacteria named after Joseph Lister (according to Wikipedia)), is there now consensus that the is no issue with this bot name and that the recommendation only applies to picking names in general without any assertion that this wasn't duly taken into consideration this time?

+1. It's odd to say Magnus doesn't put enough consideration into names: he created hundreds of tools yet he always manages to come up with a name which is both descriptive and/or a pun; I have no idea how!
As for bacteria, I hope they don't become a prohibited reference: it's their nature to be both necessary to life and sometimes very negative. As for the specific term, lister* is even the name of some widely distributed commercial products so I doubt it's offensive to many.

If a new name is needed, I suggest Listerine (also named after Joseph Lister, btw).
Let's hope that doesn't attract the trade mark lawyers, though.

sounds like a good title for a provenance tool to use on artworks from the WWII collection of the Führermuseum, since most of those seem to have ended up in the states anyway

There is no consensus at nowiki on use of this bot, it has not been raised, and the name as such has neither been discussed either. My comment on the name is solely my opinion. I'm not interested in whether it is a pun or not, it has a clear and direct connection to a disease that has killed people and I don't like it.
The bot has other issues, but that is another discussion.

I hate the term "non functional requirement" but most people would pigeonhole this extract problem. It does reach extremes and if a system is at bat enough it will strike out badly some times. Having a sense of what could be offensive is a part of social skills and it is an essential skill for intelligent systems.
Why not "Lister" or "Listerine™?" these are based on the same root and don't trigger quite the same "A=A" reaction that Listeria does.

So you are "not interested", and you "don't like it". And the world has
thus to change to accommodate your likes.
Are we actually discussing to change the name of my tool here? Because that's not going to happen. You can go name your own tool. Claiming to be offended does not mean it's offensive; it just means you're whiny.
Is this kind of answer really needed?

I think that we don't have to invoke PC every time we're talking of a not so happy choice of name.
