Hello all,
As you may know, in the past months, the Wikidata development team has been working on the first version of the *Wikidata Bridge https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikidata_Bridge*, the feature that will allow Wikipedia editors to edit Wikidata content directly from their infoboxes on the Wikipedia interface.
The first version is about to be deployed on Catalan Wikipedia, the first Wikipedia community to try it, who’s been providing great enthusiasm and support towards the project. The deployment will take place on August 18th and we’ll carefully monitor the possible issues during the upcoming weeks.
The first version of the Bridge includes minimal features https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:Vlrzy9sw6ownhafs, such as editing string datatype values, displaying the existing Wikidata references, adapting the rank depending on the reason for the edit (fix or update), and redirecting to Wikidata for actions that are not yet possible with the Bridge. It is not the final version, many improvements will be made in the future, but we wanted to have a first version out as soon as possible, to see if it works for the editors and collect feedback.
On Wikidata, edits coming from the Bridge will be flagged with the tag Data Bridge. We also made sure to check the different levels of protections, so items that are protected on Wikidata cannot be edited from Wikipedia, and users who are blocked on Wikidata cannot edit from Wikipedia.
It’s an exciting step in the direction of more collaboration between Wikidata and Wikipedia editors, and we’re looking forward to welcoming more Wikipedia editors on Wikidata!
You can follow the progress of the feature on this documentation page https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikidata_Bridge and on the related talk page https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Wikidata_Bridge. If you have any questions or suggestions, let us know. Cheers,
Hello Léa,
Thanks for the update. I am thinking about starting a discussion to have the Wikidata bridge feature for Wikidata driven infoboxes on Bengali Wikisource. Let's see.
I have just one concern. The feature will bring more and more vandals, who are active in those Wikipedia or other Wikimedia projects, directly to Wikidata through this feature. How will the Wikidata community deal with them effectively as the number of vandalism might increase manifold?
Regards, Bodhisattwa

Exactly, this is a serious problem for which we do not currently have a good solution. Perhaps we can limit the option to autoconfirmed users?

Hi,
Thanks for sharing your concerns. Here's the list of actions that we thought about, we're of course open to suggestions.
- the extension is checking if the user is blocked globally, on the local Wikipedia or on Wikidata. For these users, the Bridge is not shown. - the feature adds a tag on Wikidata, which will allow the community to monitor edits coming from the Bridge in particular - the Bridge feature will be rolled-out slowly and carefully, one Wikipedia after the other, so we can monitor its effect, learn and adapt if necessary (restricting to autoconfirmed users on Wikidata could be an option) - the first version includes the ability to edit only one datatype (string), more datatypes will come one after the other, which limits the possibility to mass-vandalism - in case of emergency, the Bridge feature can be turned off one or several Wikipedias easily and quickly, without causing incidents on the existing infoboxes
I hope that helps! Cheers, Léa

Thanks Léa for the reply.
I totally agree with Yaroslav to limit the option to use the feature at least at the autoconfirmed user level. Some community might even think best to limit them at the level of reviewer or administrator or any other trusted user rights. Will there be option to implement these limitations?

I forgot to mention one thing - the Bridge is also checking the level of protection of the item and the permissions of the user on Wikidata before allowing editing.
Limiting editing to administrators or other high level user rights is not really aligned with the goal of the Wikidata Bridge. Enabling editing Wikidata from Wikipedia would be meaningless if only a very small part of the editors can actually use it.
Seeing editing from Wikipedia as an open door for vandalism on Wikidata is only one side of the coin. When Wikidata can be edited from Wikipedia, we hope that more people will have an eye on the data, be involved in maintaining it and feel responsible for its quality. We foresee that more Wikipedia editors will improve the data, watch for possible errors, and join efforts with Wikidata editors to prevent vandalism.
Now, we take the risk of vandalism seriously, and we will be happy to discuss with you all about how we could help you improve existing patrolling processes and tools, or create new ones.
Cheers, Léa
