How can I help push this along ? https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T141813
After playing with the service more, I realized that we could allow some cool integration directly in OpenRefine and with reconciling ... if only the SPARQL Query service had FTS.
I want and need to be able to do this:
SELECT ?item ?itemLabel ?_image WHERE { ?item wdt:P178 wd:*"infocom".* SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "en". } OPTIONAL { ?item wdt:P18 ?_image. } }

Hi!
How can I help push this along ? https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T141813
We're working on it. The prerequisite for this is to make search work well in Wikidata itself (now rather far from ideal), and then we can interface it from WDQS. That means WDQS part will take a bit longer, since we are starting with Wikidata part, but it avoids duplicating work and at the end we'd get good search in both places.
Thanks Stas, So with budgets, dev, etc.... will Wikidata Search get much improved this year 2017 ? or more likely next year 2018 ?

Hopefully this year, yes. I don't have any hard time estimates but we're working on it right now and it doesn't look like it should take more than a year (famous last words, I know :) so 2017 looks like a sane estimate.
Great. Thank Stas. Then I'll wait on the Wikidata Search improvements before I commit any more changes against OpenRefine for Wikidata Query and Reconciling integrations.

Quick question on this Stas:
* Why do the suggestions that come up when typing in the search box seem so much more on-point (ie better at presenting the most likely option first) than the ones that come up in the results list?
-- eg when the search results for "cat" bring up everything *except* Q146 "domesticated species of feline" -- even though this was the top prompt in the search box?
James.

The reason is that the "search box" on wikidata.org is fake: it is not the search box you see on wikipedia, it does not use the search infrastructure that Special:Search uses (Cirrus). It uses a custom API module (wbsearchentities) which relies on a custom database table (wb_terms). We need this because Cirrus did not have suppor for structured data or multilingual fields. That is changing now, and we want to use Cirrus for everything. But until then, wikidata is using two completely different search mechanisms, both of which work well for some things, and really badly for others.
Daniel & Stas,
Btw, it was be AWESOME if wbsearchentites had a parameter option (&allDetails) to also list statements about an entity. Right now it only seems to mention a few bits of metadata and not much else.
We had that similar parameter available in the Freebase API

Hoi, Thad, there has been for a long long time functionality by Magnus that does exactly that. I use it for instance on my en.wp profile and will find Valerie Sutton.. Thanks, GerardM

Hi Gerard,
Can you point me to a URL that describes that functionality by Magnus ?

I suppose Gerard means this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Wdsearch.js
Last time I checked, it was enabled by default for everyone on it.wp.
