Hi all
I thought this might interest some of you. The Welsh Government's new mapping platform Data Map Wales (used for publishing and sharing public geo data) now has an optional base layer entirely in Welsh. This is largely based on OSM data (with some additional names from Wikidata.
Data Orchard CIC supplies the data to the platform though our Mapio Cymru project. Welsh Government creates its own tiles. We originally looked at serving tiles from https://openstreetmap.cymru but, of course, Welsh Government use a different projection so this caused some distortion.
They take data via Mapio Cymru rather than from OSM directly because we apply some additional rules and bring in names from Wikidata where appropriate. This also means that as we improve Welsh name identification they'll get the benefit of that.
We'll be publishing a blog post about it today at https://mapio.cymru and there's an online article about it at https://nation.cymru/news/users-of-digital-mapping-platform-can-now-visualis...
Any questions, suggestions or comments welcomed. _______________________________________________ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

Thank you, this is excellent!

Does this mean that the name on Wikidata takes precedence over any name on OSM and that there's no additional data source beyond OSM and Wikidata? In other words are they contributing any changes directly to OSM and Wikidata?

I do not know the details; we will have to wait for the promised blog post (it has not been published, at the time of writing).

I know some of the people behind Mapio Cymru; they are significant contributors to both OSM and Wikidata.
Hi all,
I led the project last year to include Wikidata on the Welsh OSM so perhaps I can answer your question.
The map prioritises Welsh place names from OSM where available. We filled some of the gaps (around 5-6k I think) by pulling Welsh labels from Wikidata where OSM entries have Qid's but no Welsh name.
Alongside this we did some work to add more Qid's to Welsh places on OSM but this was done manually. I've also done a lot of work to clean up Welsh settlement data on Wikidata. Andy knows the OSM community better than me but my understanding is that there is more reluctance to go for big batch edits than on Wikidata, but long term, adding more qid's to OSM (aligning the data) would be super valuable for getting the most out of the open data that is already out there, especially for mapping in smaller languages.
Hope that helps,
Jason
