Enwiki uses a fairly extensive system of marking up redirects:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Redirects_from_alternative_names https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Redirects_from_alternative_spellings
(etc)
Not all redirects by any means are there, but it would be a good way of identifying "pre-cleared" ones for import.

And I've seen countless simple searches failing due to lack of obvious redirects/aliases. Are there reasons to believe that redirects are in majority bad aliases? (Surely there can be some obvious filtering.) Are there other good sources for aliases? (Perhaps we can mass-import alternate names from VIAF etc.)
