The technical questions should be directed to the mobile apps team - Monte,
Brion, Dan et al.
My impression is that it simply pulls the description for the item from
Wikidata, if a description is available and there's not fallback, but I
might be wrong.

The latest beta version of the Wikipedia app for iOS (iPhone, iPad,
iPod) shows descriptions from Wikidata as summaries in the search results.
Interesting; screenshots appreciated. How does it cooperate with
TextExtracts? Does it also do crosswiki searches, like wdsearch? Users and
wikis interested in such functionality should install it:
