This should be very easy to change. The dialog could then contain a link to the Wikidata item for the case when one wants to edit or remove links, until such a feature is added to the dialog itself.
As far as I recall, there is some very silly technical reason that this is not easy to change at all. We tried to do this right when we introduced the other widget, of course.
I don't recall what exactly the problem was though, and it might have been fixed since. Worth another look...
