If aliases are not unique, you cannot use them to refer to properties.
You can, if they are unique. For the few that would conflict, the user would see an error, prompting him to chose a different alias. People adapt quickly to this.
If you
cannot refer to properties by alias, then you cannot change the labels of properties without breaking all usages.
