Hi, Indeed, nice set of logos!
I agree with Markus with the fact that the final logo (what ever it is) should be prominent/recognizable at smaller scales.
I wonder how important it is that the logo shares similarities with other Wikimedia logos (similar colors/fonts/shapes), so the project can be easily recognized as a Wikimedia project?
Personally, I am in favor of a simple abstract logo. They usually stands better the test of time.

Hi all,
I've just finished the new logo from the Markus idea:
Now, I stop and wait for comments and others critics.
This is very nice. I do like the overall appearance of this assembled logo. Also, the whole work clearly says "I am a logo".
This is a type of logo where one can spend arbitrary amounts of time to optimize the appearance (e.g., some icons could be more abstract). But we should view this as a draft for now and not discuss every detail yet. The icons have a slight cultural bias (with the wine being the most controversial), but again this could be refined.
In my view, it would be worth elaborating this further. I hope more people agree. The main issue is to make the logo more prominent/recognizable on smaller scales (compared to the other logos at [1]), which could require some abstraction/coarsening of the icons.

Hi Markus, thank you for helping us (designers) to find the way :) To help us a bit more, can you (and the other members) give us elements to be integrated to the logo in reference to the WikiData philosophy?
Well, just making suggestions ... in the end (like with all Wikimedia projects), the community will decide about the logo. The Wikidata developer team might only decide about the logo for the software (just like MediaWiki has an own logo that is different from Wikipedia's logo). So in fact we will need two logos :-)
So what should go into a Wikidata logo? I think: everything that people collect data about: people, animals, cars, chemistry, music, math, flowers, computers, ... Like the puzzle globe emphasizes the textual nature of Wikipedia (in many languages), a Wikidata logo should emphasize that the project is about the "things" themselves. I don't know how to make this visually appealing and clearly recognizable at the scale of a normal wiki logo, but I think it could be done.
Good luck :-)

Thanks for all the input!
One thing I would like to keep in mind is that Wikidata is meant to be easy and welcoming for a wide audience. As a computer scientist, I understand and appreciate imagery like a steel database cylinder, but I think it could look a bit technocratic to "normal" people. I don't have concrete proposals, but I would find it amazing if the logo could have a human touch to it.
One idea maybe: many people will know the Unilever logo [1] (a U made of a variety of objects). There are various logos in similar style (see also the "earth" category at logotrends 2011 [2]). Maybe something like this would be suitable for us, to show that Wikidata is about a wide range of topics and people. But making such a logo is a bit of work.
Cheers,
Markus
