Hello all,
I'm happy to announce that we started preparing our next Wikidata community
online event: the *Data Reuse Days 2025
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Event:Data_Reuse_Days_2025>*.
The event will be focusing on *how people and organizations use Wikidata's
data to build interesting applications and tools*. It aims to bring
together data reusers and editors to learn from each other and discover
cool Wikidata-powered applications. We will also cover technical aspects of
Wikidata and share research and ideas for the future of reusing Wikidata’s
data.
The event is taking place *online*, we will have sessions taking place
during *periods of 2 hours through 8 days: from February 18 to 27, 2025*.
You will be able to join sessions live, or to watch the replay later on.
You will find the schedule below on this page. The sessions take place in
English, and are open to everyone interested in the topic of data reuse.
We are welcoming proposals from Wikidata editors and reusers who want to
showcase their applications or facilitate discussions! You can *propose
sessions on the talk page until January 12th
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Event_talk:Data_Reuse_Days_2025>*. We will
then select some of them and add them to the schedule. We are especially
welcoming demos of tools or applications using Wikidata's data, discussions
between editors and reusers, and technical presentations.
While waiting for the event to take place, you can also rewatch some
sessions from our last edition in 2022
<https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLduaHBu_3ejNaZk15ybdHNWY8z-FyunRm>.
If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to write on the talk
page or to reach out to me directly.
Best,

Hello,
This is a breaking change announcement for the options parameter of the
wbformatvalue API. Based on recent usage data, we don’t expect most API
users to be affected by this change.
The wbformatvalue API has an options parameter, where various formatting
options can be specified in a JSON object. Historically, Wikibase has
allowed any option to be set to any (JSON) value here, and because the
formatter implementations often did not validate the options, it was
possible to produce various (mostly harmless) crashes in Wikibase by
setting e.g. a string-valued option to an integer. Also, even when the
options were being used correctly, most of them were of questionable
usefulness, and tracking shows
<https://grafana.wikimedia.org/d/h-hXQTtIz/wikibase-api-wbformatvalue?orgId=…>
that only very few options were actually used in practice.
To simplify the API, we are changing it so that only four options are
allowed in the JSON: lang, applyRounding, applyUnit, and showcalendar. These
allowed options and their possible values are documented in the API
documentation. Currently, invalid values for these options are already
rejected; as of 2024-11-27, any option name other than these four will also
be rejected, regardless of value. According to the tracking mentioned
above, no API request has mentioned any of the other options in the past
six months, so we do not expect that anyone will actually have to update
their code to stop sending other options.
If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment on T323778
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T323778>.

Hi everyone,
We're excited to announce that the Wikibase REST API will officially move
to a stable v1 version, going live today, November 11, 2024. This new
version will adhere to the stable interface policy
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Stable_Interface_Policy>, ensuring
reliability.
It's important to note that the older v0, which has been live on Wikidata
since early 2023, will remain available for a *four-week *transition period
until mid-December 2024 in order to avoid unnecessary maintenance costs.
We encourage all users to migrate to the new v1 API during this time to
ensure that their applications can continue to work seamlessly. In almost
all cases, this should just require replacing v0 in the routes with v1.
Please refer to the Open API swagger documentation
<https://doc.wikimedia.org/Wikibase/master/js/rest-api/> for detailed
information about the v1 API, including all endpoints, parameters, errors,
request and response formats. Additionally, you can find all the background
information and relevant links curated on our project page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:REST_API>.
If you encounter problems or want to request a new feature, please create a
ticket on our Phabricator board
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/wikibase_rest_api_wpp/>. If you have
questions or want to leave feedback, please do so on the project talk page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:REST_API#Wikibase_REST_API_is_n…!>
or reach out to Ifrah Khanyaree
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ifrahkhanyaree_WMDE>, the product
manager for the REST API.
Cheers,

Hello all, *(with apologies for cross-posting)*
We’re happy to announce that the next annual Wikimedia Hackathon will be
taking place May 2nd - 4th, 2025 in Istanbul, Turkey
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2025>! This event is
being organized by the Wikimedia Foundation in collaboration with local
Wikimedia affiliate, Wikimedia Community User Group Turkey (WMTR)
The Wikimedia Hackathon is an annual event to bring the global technical
community together to connect, hack, and explore new ideas. Technical
contributors from all around the world come together to improve the
technological infrastructure and software that powers and benefits the
Wikimedia projects.
During the Hackathon, we will focus on bringing together people who have
already contributed to the many technical aspects of Mediawiki and our
Wikimedia projects, those who know how to find their way around on our
technical ecosystem, and who are able to work or collaborate on projects
rather autonomously.
The 2025 Hackathon will happen in-person, onsite at the Renaissance Polat
Istanbul Hotel
<https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/istrn-renaissance-polat-istanbul-hote…>
, and we’ll have discounted room codes for those that want to stay at the
hotel venue, to be announced in the coming weeks.
For those unable to attend in person, we'll be live-streaming the Hackathon
opening ceremony and closing showcase. Local and global communities are
also welcome and encouraged to organize pre-hackathon events or related
meetups.
Next steps:
-
Event registration will open on November 12, 2024 and will close mid
April 2025, or earlier based on event capacity.
-
There are a limited number of scholarships that can be requested during
early registration and all scholarships provided will adhere to the WMF
travel policy
<https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Policy:Scholarship_travel_policy>
guidelines.
-
Scholarship requests will only be accepted for consideration
until December
10, 2024.
-
Mark your calendars and register early!
All participants will adhere to the Code of Conduct
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Code_of_Conduct> for Wikimedia technical
spaces and the Friendly Space Policy
<https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Policy:Friendly_space_policy>.
If you have any questions or would like to reach out to the organizing
team, feel free to email hackathon(a)wikimedia.org or comment on the talk page
