Hi there!
We have a small update on the state of WCQS beta:
1) We added a way of using SDoC based prefixes. You can both use prefixes
like sdc: in queries and they will be used in results display. Note that at
this moment it is impossible to pin them to the query directly from GUI.
For more details see [1]. Also note that autocomplete for non-wikdata items
is still not working.
2) Data reload has been automated and will happen around 9AM UTC every
Tuesday - actual time of the update depends on previous, data munging
steps, which do not block the service. It takes now about 3-4h, during
which service is being taken down. There is a maintenance page up when that
happens. Like we mentioned before - this kind of data reload is temporary
and will be replaced when we go into production.
3) We want to focus next on tasks that will help us decide how to move the
service into production.
A reminder - if you find any bugs or issues, don't hesitate to drop as a
ticket on Phabricator with the tag wikidata-query-service.
Have fun!

Hey all,
We created a connection between Wikibase, the software that runs Wikidata,
and Semantic MediaWiki.
Semantic MediaWiki adds structured data support to your wiki, similar to
Wikibase. Though the focus is different. This connection allows you to
combine the best of both worlds. As an example, you can run queries and
embed inline visualizations directly in wiki pages without needing to set
up blazegraph or the query service.
We hope to extend this connection to allow using Wikidata directly in your
semantic wiki. Potentially by building on the Wikibase federation
functionality that Wikimedia Deutschland is developing.

Hello folks,
We would like to invite you to apply to the Outreachy program with the
Wikimedia Foundation (a non-profit organization behind Wikipedia)!
*About the Outreachy program*
Wikimedia will be mentoring ~6 projects in the Outreachy’s December 2020 to
February 2021 Round, around data science and engineering. The initial
applications are due *September 20th at 4 pm UTC*.
Apply today: <https://www.outreachy.org/apply/> [1]
Outreachy offers three-month internships to work remotely in Free and Open
Source Software (FOSS) projects, coding, and non-coding related (e.g.,
design, documentation, translation, outreach, and research), with
experienced mentors. Outreachy internships run twice a year – from May to
August and December to March. Interns are paid a stipend of USD 5,500 for
the three months of work. They also have a USD 500 stipend to travel to
conferences and events. Interns often find employment after their
internship with Outreachy sponsors or in jobs that use the skills they
learned during their internship.
Outreachy is open to both students and non-students. Outreachy expressly
invites the following people to apply:
* Women (both cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people.
* Anyone who faces under-representation, systematic bias, or discrimination
in the technology industry in their country of residence is invited to
apply.
* Residents and nationals of the United States of any gender who are
Black/African American, Hispanic/Latin@, Native American/American Indian,
Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander.

application process steps <

*About the Wikimedia Foundation*
The Wikimedia Foundation <https://wikimediafoundation.org/> [3] is the
nonprofit organization that hosts and operates Wikipedia and the other
Wikimedia free knowledge projects <
https://wikimediafoundation.org/our-work/wikimedia-projects/> [4]. Our
vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum
of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute
something to our shared knowledge and that everyone should be able to
access that knowledge, free of interference. We host the Wikimedia
projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing
Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make
Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and
free knowledge to thrive.
We hope you will help us spread the word about Wikimedia’s participation in
these programs: <

*Announcement: September 10 Zoom Webinar*
Wiki Credibility Tech Demo Hour
The WikiCred <http://wikicred.org> grants initiative was launched earlier
this year with a focus on information credibility/reliability and new tools
on open-knowledge platforms like Wikipedia and Wikidata.
The Demo Hour will be held on September 10th at 12 pm EDT where 6 of our
grantees will demo their Wikipedia projects. You can register for the
online event here
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeEpva_wwZA9xIjtTni7-y0tZ_VgXW8nzV…>
. 👈👈
WikiCred is a grants programme managed by the Credibility Coalition, Hacks
Hackers, members of Wikimedia DC, and other groups. We support research,
software projects, and Wikimedia events that explore information
reliability and credibility in the Wikimedia space and the overall online
information ecosystem.
So far, we have funded 12 projects over 3 rounds of funding. You can find a
full list of the projects here <http://wikicred.org/#projects> or our own
blog <https://misinfocon.com/search?q=wikicred>. Projects range from
strengthening credible vaccine content on Wikipedia to automating the
additions of references to Wikidata.
6 grantees will join us to present their work for 5 mins each followed by a
Q&A from the attendees.
Let me know if you have any questions about the project or the event.

Hi all,
Join the Research Team at the Wikimedia Foundation [1] for their monthly
Office hours on 2020-09-01 at 16.00-17.00 (UTC).
Through these office hours, we aim to make ourselves more available to
answer some of the research related questions that you as Wikimedia
volunteer editors, organizers, affiliates, staff, and researchers face in
your projects and initiatives (*).
To participate, join the video-call via this Wikimedia-meet link [2]. There
is no set agenda - feel free to add your item to the list of topics in the
etherpad [3] (You can do this after you join the meeting, too.), otherwise
you are welcome to also just hang out. More detailed information (e.g.
about how to attend) can be found here [4].
Started in the beginning of 2020 as an experiment [5], after the first 6
editions we have evaluated the scope and format of the Research office
hours. In order to decrease barriers of accessibility and to facilitate
more direct interaction, we have switched the format from IRC to video
call. We will re-evaluate the current format at the end of the year. We
would also be glad to hear your feedback and/or comments.
(*) Some example cases we hope to be able to support you in:
-
You have a specific research related question that you suspect you
should be able to answer with the publicly available data and you don’t
know how to find an answer for it, or you just need some more help with it.
For example, how can I compute the ratio of anonymous to registered editors
in my wiki?
-
You run into repetitive or very manual work as part of your Wikimedia
contributions and you wish to find out if there are ways to use machines to
improve your workflows. These types of conversations can sometimes be
harder to find an answer for during an office hour, however, discussing
them can help us understand your challenges better and we may find ways to
work with each other to support you in addressing it in the future.
-
You want to learn what the Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation
does and how we can potentially support you. Specifically for affiliates:
if you are interested in building relationships with the academic
institutions in your country, we would love to talk with you and learn
more. We have a series of programs that aim to expand the network of
Wikimedia researchers globally and we would love to collaborate with those
of you interested more closely in this space.
-
You want to talk with us about one of our existing programs [6].
Hope to see many of you,
Martin (WMF Research Team)
