Hi,
I'm looking into ways to use tabular data like
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data:Zika-institutions-test.tab
in SPARQL queries but could not find anything on that.
My motivation here is in part coming from the time out limits, and the
basic idea here would be to split queries that typically time out into
sets of queries that do not time out and - if their results were
aggregated - would yield the results that would be expected for the
original query would it not time out.
The second line of motivation here is that of keeping track of how
things develop over time, which would be interesting for both content
and maintenance queries as well as usage of things like classes,
references, lexemes or properties.
I would appreciate any pointers or thoughts on the matter.
Thanks,
Daniel

Dear Wikimedians,
The call for proposals for grants to organise WikiCite satellite events
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite> to be held first half of 2020 is now
open.
WikiCite is an initiative to develop open citations and linked
bibliographic data to serve free knowledge. Since 2016, there has been an
annual conference in support of that goal. In 2020, this will become a
series of independently organised Satellite events around the world.
The steering committee, with the financial support of the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation and the Wikimedia Foundation, are offering grants to support
WikiCite Satellite events in three categories for events happening in the first
half of 2020:
1.
*International events in association with professional conferences *[Maximum
$10k each, Application deadline 1 February] (details
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite#1:_International_events_in_associa…>
)
2.
Local workshops and meetups [Maximum $2k each, Open until funds are
allocated] (details
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite#2:_Local_workshops_and_meetups>
)
3.
Events seeking non-financial support (details
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite#3:_Events_seeking_non-financial_su…>
)
Submissions are especially encouraged if they are related to marginalised
knowledge and/or hosted at a location in the global South.
To read the detailed criteria for each of these categories, and to apply
for a WikiCite Satellite event grant, visit:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite
Sincerely and on behalf of the steering committee
<http://wikicite/administration#Coordination>,
Liam Wyatt / Wittylama
WikiCite program manager [WMF Contractor]
Note: If you wish to host an event in support of WikiCite’s aims, but do
not require any support, you do not need to apply for ‘permission’. Please
add your event to the ongoing calendar of events

LD4 Conference on Linked Data in Libraries: May 13-14, 2020
Preconference workshops: May 12, 2020
Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA
Registration starts: Wednesday, March 4
Stipend application deadline: Sunday, March 15
Registration deadline: Friday, April 17
We're excited to announce that registration for the 2020 LD4 Conference will open on Wednesday, March 4th. Join us May 13-14 at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, USA to learn concrete ways that linked data benefits GLAM institutions, and discover pathways to participation in linked data. Please visit the conference web site (ld4.io)<http://ld4.io> for more details. Wikimedians are most warmly welcome to attend and participate in this conference!
Whether you have already implemented linked data in your work or are just getting started, you will leave with a better understanding of what linked data is, how it can be used, and what you can do to get started or continue to incorporate linked data in your institutions or projects. By bringing together a broad range of perspectives, and centering diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethics in our discussions, we will create a community of practice for linked data in libraries.
We are delighted to have Karen Hwang as our conference kick-off speaker. Karen's practice as a metadata professional and archivist is rooted in concerns of discoverability and representation. She works to promote underrepresented histories through digital collections, and has explored ways to implement linked open data to enhance and boost the discovery of cultural heritage resources. Other program highlights include, "Workshopping Queeries: Linked Data Vocabularies and Ethical Cataloging," "Where Linked Data Can Impact User Experience: Findings from a Study on Discovery Workflows," "'I don't think I'll ever understand linked data': How to Teach Linked Data to Our Colleagues," and "Linking bilingual bibliographic data: a Wikidata-based project of Chinese writers' archival collections."
A $100 registration fee will help to cover conference expenses and will include food and beverages during morning and afternoon breaks as well as a lunch buffet for both conference days, May 13th and 14th. There will not be an additional registration fee for pre-conference workshops on March 12th. Thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a limited number of stipends<https://sites.google.com/stanford.edu/ld42020/stipends> will be available to make participation possible for those who would not otherwise be able to attend.
We hope that you'll join us! Please visit conference web site (ld4.io)<http://ld4.io> for more information. We'll send out another message on Wednesday when registration opens.

Hello all,
A new dashboard got released for Wikidata’s birthday, and I realized that
it was not properly announced here - sorry for that, let’s catch up :)
The *Wikidata Languages Landscape dashboard
<https://wmdeanalytics.wmflabs.org/WD_LanguagesLandscape/>* provides
insights into the ways languages are organized and used in Wikidata and
across the Wikimedia projects that reuse Wikidata. It relies on different
data sources: the Wikidata dumps, various datasets obtained directly from
the Query Service, and datasets on Wikidata entity reuse statistics
obtained from the Wikidata Concepts Monitor
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Wikidata_Concepts_Monitor>.
The dashboard provides different features:
- The *ontology* tab, visualizing the graph of Wikidata ontology
regarding languages
- The *language/class* tab, generating graphs of items connected to a
language, class or category
- The *label sharing* graph, showing how similar the languages are
judging from the extent of their overlap in what Wikidata items they have
labels for
- The *language status* tab, focussing on the UNESCO language
endangerment categories and the Ethnologue language status
- The *language use* tab, representing various indicators of language
usage in Wikidata and across the Wikimedia projects
If you have any questions related to this dashboard, feel free to ask.

Hello all,
The fourth edition of the Celtic Knot Conference, focusing on minority
languages on the Wikimedia projects, will take place on July 9th and 10th,
2020 in Limerick, Ireland.
The Celtic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference aims to bring people together
to share their experiences of working on sharing information in minority
languages. We hope to help people learn how to encourage the flow of
information across language barriers and support associated communities. As
in previous years we will have a strong focus on *Wikidata and its
potential to support languages*.
Wikimedia UK has been the organiser with local partners for the 2017 Celtic
Knot Wikimedia Language Conference in Edinburgh (focusing on Scottish
Gaelic), in 2018 in Aberystwyth (focusing on Welsh) and in 2019 in Falmouth
(focusing on Cornish). In 2020, the conference will focus on Irish and
developing its Wikimedia community - whilst making sure that we can share
and support other languages in the Celtic Knot and beyond.
The programme will include presentations and workshops linked to the
conference themes of:
-
How Wikidata and language technology can support minority languages
-
Wikimedia projects in education with language applications
-
Experiences with empowering wiki communities to create content in their
language
-
How cultural institutions and wiki communities work together to provide
more accessible knowledge in minority languages
We especially expect a lot of representatives from Irish cultural
institutions as well as contributors of Wikimedia projects in various
languages.
Are you interested in participating? Save the date in your calendar! The
call for submissions to the program will start on February 27th until March
30th. A scholarship program will be set up and more information will be
shared in March.
More details about the conference:

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave a comment on
the talk page.
Feel free to share this email to any people or groups you think would be
interested!

Hello everyone,
With great pleasure, we would like to invite you to the WikiCite Satellite
Event hosted by the Open Heritage Foundation in New Delhi on April 18,19
2020.
Wikicite is a Wikimedia event to develop open citations and linked
bibliographic data to serve free knowledge. The Wikimedia community and the
GLAM institutions need to understand the dynamics of open bibliographic
data better and how it can be scaled proactively with Wikimedia projects
and other open-source platforms that are involved in open data.
This event will be aimed at addressing the prevalent gap between Wikidata
and Wikisource integration for works and their consecutive items.
The format and structure of the event would have open calls for
collaborators/presenters/participants. The event will be of 2 days and the
attendance would be around 15-25 people, including, the stakeholders
working with GLAM institutions, Wikisourcers, and Wikidatans interested in
bibliographical data.
The scholarships and registrations are open from February 26, 2020 and
close on March 15, 2020. We also invite the community members to submit
proposals for sessions. The date for submissions starts from February 26,
2020 and close on March 11, 2020. The submissions will be taken into
account for prioritizing the candidates for scholarships.
We look forward to welcoming you to New Delhi in April with the
collaborative spirit of this year’s Wikimania theme ‘Sharing knowledge
brings people together’ and ‘Power of Diverse Collaboration’.
