Hi Everyone,
My name is Bernardo and I work as a Business Intelligence Consultant in
Toronto, Canada. I've been reading pretty much everything about WikiData
over the past few days, and I'm really excited about this project! I would
love to participate and collaborate in developing tools to bring data from
external sources, particularly the vast open data sets that are so common
right now.
I have some questions about the project and how can I participate, that you
might be able to help me with:
1) I know the data import is planned for a future phase 2. Do you think it
would be useful to start working on some of that now?
2) I also learned that you guys had a round
table<http://wikidataroundtable.eventbrite.com/>on June 21 about this
topic (wish I could have known about Wikidata and
been there!) but I couldn't find what the outcome of that discussion was.
Is there anywhere where I can find what was discussed there?
3) Is there anyone else on the list working on the subject of how to bring
data in? I have some ideas on the subject, but again, don't know if this is
too early in the project.
Thanks,
Bernardo Najlis
CRM & Business Intelligence Consultant
Based on the feedback so far I have frozen the datatype for time [1] and
updated the datatype for coordinates. There are now two distinct members:
* precision: which actually means the precision in the representation, i.e.
by the degree or arcsecond, etc., and which is used to calculate different
representations
* dimension: which represents the "size" of the object / target area in
meter, and which can be used to choose the scale for a map or to represent
uncertainty about the coordinate [2]
The dimension parameter is based on the work of Max Semenik in the GeoData
extension and recognized as a solution to the discussion that happened here
on the list.
If you have any further comments on the datatype for coordinates, say so
here. Otherwise I will move to quantities next :)
Cheers,
Denny

I’ll just mention a data quality problem that’s annoyed me with DBpedia so far.
People often get confused if longitude is east or west, so they get the sign wrong. If you plot coordinates from Wikipedia you find a shadow image of Europe, for instance, reflected across the prime meridian. It turns out, however, there are a bunch of shipwrecks and seamounts out there too.
It would be nice to see these cleaned up.

Subject: Re: [Wikidata-l] Coordinate datatype -- update
Nine decimals is what is used for WAAS reference stations, which appear in Wikipedia.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide_Area_Augmentation_System#List_of_referenc…>
I actually also think it is a bit excessive, but it is there and looks legit. I'd rather support it than not (and save 20 MB of disk space).
Some of the validations sound useful (no values greater than 360), others a bit restrictive (same number of decimal places). I'd prefer the software to be rather lax than draconic (it *is* a wiki, after all).
I agree about trailing zeros. They are covered by the precision parameter.
Thanks for the input!
Cheers,
Denny

Nine decimal places seems excessive.
We can apply some rudimentary validation: no latitude or longitude
values greater than 360, for instance (perhaps other criteria
dependent on the coordinate system); latitude and longitude should
have the same number of decimal places; trailing zeroes are
significant and must not be discarded.

For convertion between units, why not using the already built-in system of
"Languages Translation" ?
Hence, if people gives the value in Meter someone else could give it in
Foot with the right precision and there will just be a link of
"Translation" between those two
Same apply for Units being given in SI ("kg⋅m2⋅s−3⋅A−2") and a Translation
to "Ohm"
My two cents

Dear all,
Long time ago this bug[1] was opened to be able to permit IPA or SAMPA
parsing and allow on the fly generation of sound file for a word
It might be something interesting to put in the scope of Wikidata (since we
have for each thing the way we name it in many languages, we might also be
interested in the way to pronunce it in those languages)
Best regards,
Mohamed

Heya folks :)
Today is the day. We've deployed Wikidata on the Hungarian Wikipedia
\o/ I wrote a blog post with all the details at
http://blog.wikimedia.de/2013/01/14/first-steps-of-wikidata-in-the-hungaria…
Thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen and especially
the Hungarian Wikipedia community for agreeing to be the first.
Cheers
Lydia
PS: The first important edit was already made as well:

Maybe yes, but wikidata allows different opinions. How do you decide, if
the chunk of text replaced in VE should replace the data or if it should
be just adding it by another chunk of data.
Just a few examples:
1. Replacement:
a) data gets clearer
We did not knew the exact number of killed/injured people of a big
accident/catastrophes relevant for all Wikipedias (also the German one
;-) ) recently after it happend. Fucushima would be an example or a big
Earth quake like in Haiti.
With the time you will get an exact number, because it needed some time
to figure this out and the number changes as some more people die
afterwards initially caused by the accident.
Articles are created very soon after anything like that. In the
beginning they use the data populated also by the media. With the time
this will get clearer and the data will turn more precise. So also those
values need to be changed.
b) Wrong entered data:
Sometimes it happens, however, that somebody enter wrong data. This can
happen intentionally and just by accident. If you change this data in
the VE, you definitely have to replace this on Wikidata.
2. Additional Information:
There is an election in a country. The former president was not
reelected. If this is changed on Wikidata, the information should not be
replaced on Wikidata, it should be added with the qualifier "since:date"
and the previous value should be altered by "until:date"
In the end all edits in by authors in the current editor and in the
visual one will are just tracked as changes, but how do you decide
weather to replace the information or add it?

Hi all,
We did yet another version of the inclusion syntax (admittedly, the last
one is a few months old).
We decided to very much simplify the syntax and also the ability of the
inclusion syntax, and depend on anything more complex than what will be
possible with that syntax on Lua.
I am expecting that a lot of people will not like this idea.
Therefore I will start two threads: first this one, where we discuss if the
inclusion syntax is actually sufficient or if it lacks absolutely essential
features that should not depend on Lua.
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Notes/Inclusion_syntax_v0.3>
And a second thread where we discuss the details and merits of the proposal
as it is, and if there are issues with it as it is.
Cheers,
Denny
P.S.: yes, I learned that we should not have too many topics per thread
starter. Let's see if this gets any feedback at all :)
