-- Apologies for cross-posting --
Last week the national library of the Netherlands (KB) donatedhttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Koninklijke_Bibliotheek over 3100 images from 3 historic atlases (period 1690-1750) to Commons.
Each atlas has its own category
* Category:Atlas Schoemakerhttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Atlas_Schoemaker (2579 images)
* Category:Atlas_van_der_Hagenhttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Atlas_van_der_Hagen (446 images)
* Category:Atlas_Beudekerhttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Atlas_Beudeker (133 images)
This was the first time the KB used the GLAMwiki-upload toolhttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:GLAMwiki_Toolset, which can upload large numbers of images batchwise. This tools has been used by many GLAMs, including the Institute for Sound & Visionhttp://www.beeldengeluid.nl/en/blogs/research-amp-development-en/201407/first-batch-upload-wikimedia-commons-using-gwtoolset ant the Peace Palacehttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_the_Peace_Palace_Library. So far over 430.000https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:GWToolset_Batch_Upload images have been donated worldwide using this tool.
The three atlases were digitized in the late '90s and put online on the Memory of the Netherlandshttp://www.geheugenvannederland.nl/?/en/instellingen/koninklijke_bibliotheek website. This has been the source of the current donations.
* Atlas Schoemakerhttp://www.geheugenvannederland.nl/?/en/collecties/schoemaker displays 2579 images of topographical drawings, descriptions and prints of Dutch towns, villages and hamlets in the early 18th century. It was named after Andries Schoemakerhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/de:Andries_Schoemaker (1660-1735), an Amsterdam textile merchant whose passion was collecting historical and topographic information on towns and villages, and churches and castles in the Netherlands.
* Atlas Van der Hagenhttp://www.geheugenvannederland.nl/?/en/collecties/atlassen/over_de_atlassen from around 1690 contains topographical drawings and prints from across the globe in various formats, beautifully colored and decorated with gold. This relatively unknown atlas from the KB consists of four volumes bound in parchment, each holding approx. 100 pages. They were collected by the Amsterdam merchant and map collector Dirk van der Hagenhttp://www.kb.nl/en/themes/maps/more-atlases/dirk-van-der-hagens-atlas
* The Beudeker collectionhttp://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelprestype/maps/beudcoll/beudekercols.html from The British Library consists of 24 volumes and is named after the rich Amsterdam merchant Christoffel Beudekerhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christoffel_Beudeker. Volume 21 (from around 1750) contains 133 images devoted to the northern and southern Netherlandshttp://www.geheugenvannederland.nl/?/en/collecties/atlassen/over_de_atlassen. This is the volume donated to Commons.
Uploading the images is just the start, in the next couple of weeks the KB will work on
* Expanding WP-articles about the atlases themselves, the creators/collectors (Andries and Gerrit Schoemaker, Cornelis Pronk, Abraham de Haen, Dirk van der Hagen etc) in multiple language versions
* Creating / expanding related Wikidata-items
* Promotional activities outside the community
The KB would like to invited all Wikip/m/edians to reuse the images as widely as possible, which could include
* Using them in WP-articles (no-brainer)
* Further (sub)categorization of the images. A subdivision into country/city/place names would make sense, see for instance this list of place nameshttp://www.geheugenvannederland.nl/?/en/collectieindex/schoemaker/SCHOE01.index.locaties for Schoemaker. Unfortunately it was not possible to do automatic subcategorization via the GLAMwiki-upload tool.
Including these 3 atlases the KB has now released 7 historic atlases, see this overviewhttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Koninklijke_Bibliotheek.
With kind regards

Nice work.
Scans of maps/atlantes are some of the highest resolution images that most Wikimedia Commons users might have reason to browse. They are a good test of systems, especially the in-built zoom viewer!
I have sub-categorized collections by careful pre-processing of the XML files that feed into the GLAMwiki toolset. In practice there is little harm in getting on with a batch upload without categorization being fully worked out, so long as some thought (and resources) are put into "housekeeping" tasks in the days after upload. You may want to add some of the top categories to the GLAM dashboard[1] so that you can easily track and report on usage and volunteer engagement. The simplest recommendation I make for volunteer categorizers, is to read up on cat-a-lot and work out how to use the "insource:" option for searches. Adding hundreds of images to a category, or moving them between categories then becomes a quick and simple.[2][3]
Perhaps one other thing I would like to suggest as an improvement is approaching the community on the Map workshop[4] and seeing if some volunteers would like to suggest a best practice for adding geocoordinates to the images, possibly creating a volunteer backlog to check these by hand.

Thank you Olaf, this kind of donations are wonderful examples for other countries too. I've just reported it to Italian libraries major list, after a discussion some weeks ago about a regional digital library [1] and its choice of CC BY-NC-SA licenses insted of PD. It's a long road for us...
