dear all with WikiAfrica we are trying to get contents and data on African cities, villages and territories on Wikipedia.
1. Marcok is working on putting together the available data http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progetto:Amministrazioni/Africa/Fonti#Collegame... 2. with the support of the University of Cape Town/African Center for Cities (Edgar Pieterse and Ismail Farouk) we are got in contact with Paul Sinclair, director of studies at the Uppsala University/Department of Archaeology and Ancient History. Paul Sinclair has been working on African cities for many years. I also contacted UN-Habitat. 3. m.casanova is collaborating in editing the data to produce the necessary CVS files. 4. we will make a test on Wikipedia in Italian (there are around 10 volunteers currently involved)
the idea is to create articles on African cities, villages and territories on wikipedia in all African languages (which include of course also English, French...). we plan to also provide the data for the German data project when possible and useful.
We would be really pleased if you can contact us if you have ideas, suggestions or links to existing databases (or to GLAMs we can contact to have access to data). please do not hesitate to forward the message to people who might be interested in the initiative. thanks iolanda/iopensa

Not GLAMs, but you could ask the OpenStreetMap community for assistance - a dump of their data on placenames and boundaries for instance - and they may have someone who has a specialist interest or access to further sources..
thanks andy and dominic for the important hints. we actually already have access to the contents available on open street map also from other sources; but it is a very good idea to link our work with OSM.
we are still looking for data related to housing, access to water and energy, population, density, administration, history, monuments, museums, religion, sport. The Liberia's national archives is a very good idea. please let me know if you have any other idea. please note that contents and data are not only in Africa. all the best iolanda

Hello nice people,
Mid last year, I attended the launch of OpenData by the Kenyan government. This initiative was driven by the ICT board of Kenya. At the launch the President said that this data collection was funded by public funds and so it should be available for free and openly under the public domain. It has been a gradual but successful process as some of the data has to be digitized first.
Under this Kenya Opendata, data includes: various dimensions of population data; local and national government authority expenditure; public health indicator data and statistics including hospital locations; education data such as enrollment rates and school locations; parliamentary proceedings (digital Hansard); weather information and detailed census statistics on topics such as access to electricity, water and sanitation, education, religion etc.
Hope that helps;)

Last fall, when the US National Archives presented on Wikipedia for the International Council on Archives conference, we were approached by someone from Liberia's National Archives who was interested in Wikipedia for improving access to their land deed records, especially because a lot of their potential users are refugees abroad. At the time, I wasn't able to find any local or interested contacts to work with them on the project, but maybe it would fit in with this project? I still have the contact information, if you would be interested in getting in talking with them.
Dominic
