Do you organize wiki events? Would you like to have a convenient tool that provides metrics about the impact of your events? Then you are a potential user of Event Metrics [1], a new tool under development. I’m writing now to find event organizes who can help us test the usability of this new metrics program, to make sure people such as yourself can understand and easily use its functions.
The test will involve a videoconference session with a design researcher, who will lead you through a series of tasks on the program and talk to you about how well the tool's user interface works for you and how it could be improved. Sessions will take place the second and third weeks of January.
If you’d like to help out, please email Daisy Chen, dchen(a)wikimedia.org <mailto:dchen@wikimedia.org>, and let her know:
* The email address where you prefer to be reached.
* Your time zone
* General times when you prefer to meet (evenings, mornings, etc.)
Daisy will follow up to schedule a time. Thanks for helping to make Event Metrics a tool that event organizers will find easy and empowering!

Thank you all for your kind words and excitement!
@Gnangarra, Ben:
Indeed one of the exciting possibilities working with audio is oral
histories. That our team now will be able to think, discuss and prepare for how
audio files best can be included on the Wikimedia projects should give us
relevant insights for future work.
I am also very much looking forward to see how the *Wikipeech Speech Data
Collector* (WSDC) tools might contribute to the collection of oral
histories.[1]
If funded we aim for WSDC to have a set of tools to crowdsource CC0
licensed speech data for the Wikimedia platforms and to become a service to
the entire FOSS community and to many others working with accessibility
online. Over time WSDC should allow us to add more languages to Wikispeech
and improve diversity on all platforms using MediaWiki. The same WSDC tools
could potentially also be useful for collecting, annotating and
disseminating e.g. oral histories or historical recordings.
To develop WSDC in 2019-2021 Wikimedia Sverige, together with a large
number of GLAM and university partners (with wonderful support from our
friends at Wikimedia Deutschland[2]), have recently sent in a major grant
application of 440,000 USD. We should get an answer about the funding in
February next year. (We are now among the last teams competing for the
funds and it looks very promising.) Please send positive thoughts!
[1] For the 75 page application detailing the project, see here (in
Swedish): https://se.wikimedia.org/wiki/Projekt:Wikispeech_2019/Ansökan
[2] WMDE's and WMSE's tech teams will share knowledge and insights
ongoingly as part of the project - I am very excited about more
inter-affiliate cooperation.
Kind regards and happy holidays,
John
PS. If funded we will be looking to hire at least one new developer with
expertise in speech data or other relevant skills. Drop me an email if you
are interested or if you know some great person.

Wikimedia Sverige is proud to be the recipient of $55,000 in support from
the grant-giving organization Kulturbryggan (Culture Bridge) for a project
investigating how to best include audio files on Wikimedia Commons.
Our work will focus on batch uploading audio files onto Wikimedia Commons
(with a focus on music recordings). In preparations for this, we will
investigate how the metadata can be included in a way that is best suited
for Structured Data once it gets deployed. This is a pilot project where we
aim to discuss with the community what to include and what to exclude. The
discussions and the requests from the community will form our planning
around future work with uploading audio files onto Wikimedia Commons. We
look forward working with the community and with the Structured Data team
at Wikimedia Foundation on how metadata about audio files can be included
in a well-structured and useful way.
This project will connect very closely to the FindingGLAMs project[1] and
will form one of the case studies included in it. In the case study we will
provide guidance for other GLAMs and Wikimedia affiliates who want to
upload audio files in the future.
The project also connects closely to Wikimedia Sverige’s planned project
aimed at building tools to collect speech recordings. The recordings,
illustrating how words are pronounced etc., will then be used to improve
the quality of Wikispeech[2], a text-to-speech (TTS) system that converts
written text into speech. We want to see what type of speech recordings can
and should be stored on Wikimedia Commons and what kind of metadata should
be included there; this project will help us clarify the needs.
Please contact John Andersson (john.andersson(a)wikimedia.se) if you have any
questions.
As always, you can find the full application available on our wiki (in
Swedish).[3]

Hello everyone,
Exciting times: the first feature of Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons -
multilingual captions - can now be beta tested. See below for further
explanation.
After the deployment of captions, the other functionalities of Structured
Commons (depicts + other statements from Wikidata) will be added in the
next months.
Looking forward to your tests and feedback! Sandra

Subject: [Commons-l] Structured data on Commons: Multilingual captions beta
testing
To: Wikimedia Commons Discussion List <commons-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, <
wikidata(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
The Structured Data on Commons team has begun beta testing of the first
feature, multilingual file captions, and all community members are invited
to test it out. Captions is based on designs discussed with the community
[1][2] and the team is looking forward to hearing about testing.
***If all goes well during testing, captions will be turned on for Commons
around the second week of January, 2019.***
Multilingual captions are plain text fields that provide brief, easily
translatable details of a file in a way that is easy to create, edit, and
curate. Captions are added during the upload process using the
UploadWizard, or they can be added directly on any file page on Commons.
Adding captions in multiple languages is a simple process that requires
only a few steps.
The details:
-
There is [[mw:Help:File_captions|a help page available on how to use
multilingual file captions]]
-
Testing will take place on Beta Commons. If you don’t yet have an
account set up there, you’ll need one. (direct link:
https://commons.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Main_Page )
-
Beta Commons is a testbed, and not configured exactly like the real
Commons site, so expect to see some discrepancies with UI elements like
search
-
Structured Data introduces the potential for many important page changes
to happen at once, which could flood the recent changes list. Because of
this, Enhanced Recent Changes
<https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Help:Enhanced_recent_changes> is enabled
as it currently is at Commons, but with some user interface changes.
-
Feedback and commentary on the file caption functionality are welcome
and encouraged on the discussion page for this post:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Structured_data/Beta_captio…
-
Some testing has already taken place and the team are aware of some
issues. A list of known issues can be seen below
-
If you discover a bug/issue that is not covered in the known issues,
please file a ticket on Phabricator and tag it with the “Multimedia” tag.
Use [
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/edit/form/1/?projects=mult…
this link to file a new task] already tagged with "Multimedia."
Known issues:
-
Search is not currently working on Beta Commons. Search is not needed
for testing captions, but service should be restored soon.
-
Language name display inconsistencies in multilingual file captions -
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T209380
-
Language names for multilingual File captions can run into the caption
value in the mobile view - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T209333
-
Deleting a caption field that has text that exceeds the limit does not
re-enable the "publish" button -
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T209329
-
"Edit" tab for past revisions should be "restore" -
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T209187
-
When using the back button, recently added captions sometimes don't
display in Chrome - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T208894
-
File Captions can't be edited on mobile browsers -
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T208993
-
Wrong font weight for some language labels on SDC captions box -

Dear GLAMWiki enthusiasts,
I have a huge favor to ask of everyone in this mailing list --
TLDR: *please fill out* *this questionnaire
<https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/%E2%80%8Bhttps://goo.gl/forms/WMFb6j2mpG2H…!!>!*
And now in more details:
As some of you may know, I'm a PhD candidate at the School of Education,
Tel Aviv University, and my research focuses on Wikidata as a learning
platform.
To succeed in my research, I need data about how users (especially GLAM
institutions & GLAMers) interact with Wikidata, so it would be of great
help if you could take the time to fill out the questionnaire linked above.
It's estimated that it should take between 15-30 minutes, depending on how
detailed your answers would be.
I'm striving for at least 100 replies, but this is one of those cases of
"the more, the merrier", so every person filling it out is of huge help.
Please feel free to ping me privately or send me an email if you have any
questions, or if you are willing to participate in a follow up
interview (there's
also an option to mark that in the questionnaire itself).
Thanks in advance for considering filling it out. I will be forever grateful
to anyone who can help and promise to update you on my progress. :)
Cheers,
Shani.
