As we have stated in our annual plan [1], “currently, community members
must search many pages and places to stay informed about Foundation
activities and resources.” We have worked in the past two quarters to
create a single point of entry. We call it the Wikimedia Resource Center,
and its alpha version is now live on Meta Wikimedia:

As the movement expands to include more affiliates and more programmatic
activities every year, newer Wikimedians are faced with lack of experience
in the movement and its various channels for requesting support. In order
to expand Wikimedia communities’ efforts, we want to provide easy access to
resources that support their very important work. The [[m:Wikimedia
Resource Center]] is a hub designed in response to this issue: it is
intended to evolve into a single point of entry for Wikimedians all over
the world to the variety of resources and types of staff support they may
need to develop new initiatives or also expand existing ones.
This version of the Resource Center is only the beginning. For phase two of
the project, we will enable volunteer Wikimedians to add resources
developed by other individuals or organizations to the Wikimedia Resource
Center, and in phase three, the Wikimedia Resource Center will include
features to better connect Wikimedians to other Wikimedians that can
support them.
We want to hear what you think about this prototype and our plans for it!
If you have comments about the Wikimedia Resource Center, you can submit
your feedback publicly, on the Talk Page, or privately, via a survey hosted
by a third party, that shouldn’t take you more than 4 minutes to complete.
A feedback button is on the top right corner on every page of the hub.

Hi everyone,
I am pleased to announce the launch of the fourth Inspire Campaign for
IdeaLab, focused on outreach to outside knowledge networks:

There is tremendous potential in cooperative work between Wikimedia
contributors and entities such as libraries (and other GLAM
institutions[1]), cultural centers, content experts, and other sources of
information. Such outreach can lead to rewarding collaborative efforts
that, among many benefits, helps us create and offer better quality content
to readers.
All types of proposals are welcome - research projects, software
development, and naturally for this campaign, community organizing and
outreach. Wikimedia Foundation staff are also invited to advise on ideas
they can offer support and guidance on. Project Grants[2] and Rapid
Grants[3] are available for projects developed during this campaign that
need financial support. For ideas that do not require funding, I am happy
to provide general guidance on projects on how to bring your idea to
action. The campaign runs until 28 February.
If you're interested in doing some outreach work to an institution,
organization, or group in your area, or want to help with an existing
outreach project, I encourage you to check out the submissions of this
campaign!

in a nutshell: Europeana <http://www.europeana.eu/portal/de#> is the
European answer to the Google art project. It might not contain so awesome
images but a lot more diverse material. I am very happy that I was elected
to become a member of its council last fall. For the first time a Wikimedia
representative has become a member and here you find my introduction

Hey #1lib1ref organizers, WikiLibrarians and GLAM-Wiki enthusiasts,
We wanted to send a brief update on how the campaign is going:
As of writing the email, the campaign has tracked over 1930 contributions
by 392 contributos in 1332 articles in 15 different languages (remember we
expect we are missing 1/4-1/2 of contributions that don't use the hashtag).
This well surpasses our [https://meta.wikimedia.org/
wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Lessons contributions from last year],
and we still have another week and a half to go! We published a brief
update blog at https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/01/24/1lib1ref-first-
week-highlights/ to highlight these accomplishments.
We have seen a slightly smaller amount of blogging and newsletters as part
of the Campaign this year. We think this may be in part, because the
campaign is less novel and in part because of the broad number of
distractions in the press at the moment (we actually think this means we
have been more grassroots this year which is a good signal for the network
for Wikipedia and libraries). If you find pieces of press or blogs, make

We are testing a Central Notice Banner, to encourage Wikimedians to go talk
to their librarians about #1lib1ref. So far we have seen pageview activity
from Wikipedians, but it is not clear how much that will transfer into
activity. We have yet to see a social media boost or huge boost in
participation using the hashtag. If you want to try the banner in your
language, instructions are below [1]
We could still use your help reminding librarians in your context to
participate! Something as simple as visiting your library and showing the
librarians how to add a citation to Wikipedia, or sending an email to your
local library organiziations, would be awesome. Sharing in digital
communications attracts some participants to the campaign, but we also know
that many of participants are encouraged by friends, peers, colleagues or
patrons to participate.
We look forward to seeing what other activities events emerge this year. If
you need help, make sure to contact the Wikipedia Library team.

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is happening this March. Join us again or organize

WHY?
Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify
as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the
practical effect of the disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of
female participation. Established in 2014, Art+Feminism Wikipedia
Edit-a-thon is a response to the gender gap in content and participation on
Wikipedia.
As the lead co-organizers of Art+Feminism, we’ve been deeply disturbed by
the sheer amount of fake news on social media, and its influence on the
recent US election. We believe this makes our work even more pressing. Now
more than ever we must gather together to improve Wikipedia and affirm work
of women, people of color, immigrants, the LGBTQIA+ community and other
marginalized peoples.
HOW?
Hold an Edit-a-thon at your local university, artist run center, museum,
community center, etc! Art+Feminism Edit-a-thons address content and
participation gaps by inviting people of all gender identities and
expressions to gather for communal updating of Wikipedia entries related to
art and feminism. The leadership collective supports Edit-a-thon organizers
by: providing an organizer’s kit

promotional and training materials, and more; funding to defray the costs
of refreshments and childcare; and training and support.
WHEN?
The 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at The Museum of Modern Art,

welcome to hold their event on this day or any other date in March, 2017

Hi GLAM-Wiki programs leaders and community,
I am really excited to share with you that the foundation has received the
below grant for Structured Data on Commons. I have been supporting this
development, because as many of you know, GLAM-Wiki collaborations are
deeply connected to how we handle metadata, esp. integrating content
donations into Commons.
A major component of the grant, will be collaborating with our GLAM
partners, especially with institutions that have robust technical expertise
about structured data who can give feedback on the roadmap and features of
the Structured Commons project. If there is someone who should be kept
informed, please let me know: in the short term, I will be helping connect
the development team with some initial outside expertise and with partners
who have done mass-uploads before.
As we get deeper into the project we will want to also work with
organizations willing to interact with the technology. If any of your
partners or volunteer GLAM leaders would like to help us understand their
use of Commons please let me know.
Also, I wanted to give a special thank you to community leaders, like
User:Jarekt, User:Husky, User:Spinster, User:Multichill, User:Jane023,
User:Magnus Manske, User:TheDJ, User:Wittyllama, User:Aubrey,
User:Pigsonthewing, and the many others who for the last few years, have
been experimenting with connecting GLAM collections with our structured
data ecosystem on both Commons and through Wikidata. When both
communicating the need for Structured data on Commons within the Foundation
and supporting the development of the grant, the examples and case studies
you have provided along with all that I have learned about structured data
from you, helped greatly in putting this together.

Hello Wikimedia community,
It’s our delight to inform you that we received a US$3,015,000 grant from
the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_P._Sloan_Foundation> [1] to expedite
development of structured data on Commons. The grant will be given over the
course of three years, and will allow us to develop a team, in
collaboration with the Wikidata team at Wikimedia Deutschland, that can
focus on integrating the structured data features of Wikidata into
describing the media files on Commons.
This work will allow us to expedite features both on the Wikidata
development roadmap, and in other products supported by the Wikimedia
Foundation. The grant also provides funding to ensure that movement
stakeholders, like Wiki Loves Monuments and GLAM-Wiki program leaders, and
external partners who contribute heavily to Commons, such as GLAMs, can be
involved in the development.
We have drafted a high level overview of the grant and its scope, available
