Hello all,
After some months of discussions and meetings we started this month our first GLAM Project in Brasil.
Finally we added Brazil to the GLAM map [1]. Since it's our first pilot project, we are learning the best way to upload content and organize all info regarding the uploaded files.
Our partner, Immigration Museum of the state of São Paulo[2] is receiving support from Creative Commons Brazil and from our team to adopt CC licenses and publish open content.
That first pilot project[3] will cover a new exhibition that will be launched soon by the museum. During the next months we will discuss regarding massive uploads regarding other exhibitions and internal museum's archives and collections.
Since it's our first project, we will need additional guidance and support. During the last days we received some contradictory information from Commons admins/contributors.
The museum sent created an OTRS ticket to provide info regard the ownership and licenses of the uploaded content and contents that will be added by the museum during the near future[4].
Here[5] you can see the pilot project. All guidance and tips and tricks are welcome ;-)
Best regards

Dear list-members,
I would like to draw your attention to 3 digital collections originating
from Dutch institutions that have recently been made available on Wikimedia
Commons:
1. The African Studies Center
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afrika-Studiecentrum,_Leiden>, Leiden
University, donated 756 images made by Roel Coutinho
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Guinea-Bissau_and_Senegal_1973-1…>,
a Dutch MD working in Guinea-Bissau and Senegal between 1973 and 1974. The
images show aspects of daily life such as food preparation, festivities and
school and hospital buildings, among other things. The metadata (including
Portuguese captions) were prepared by Michele Portatadino, the upload was
done by Hans Muller using the GWToolset.
2. The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Netherlands_Institute_of_Southeast_Asia…>
and Leiden University Library
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leiden_University_Library> donated 3114
images <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:KITLV_donation_2016> to
Wikimedia Commons as a follow-up to an earlier donation containing 2400+
images <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:KITLV_donation_2015>.
The new donation contains photos, lithos, drawings, watercolours showing
people, landscapes, plantations, plants and butterflies from countries such
as Suriname, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and Singapore. The upload
was carried out by Hans Muller.
3. The National Museum of World Cultures
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17153751> (a merger of the former
Tropenmuseum, the Museum Volkenkunde and the Afrika Museum) donated a
collection
of 720 images
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Files_from_the_Nationaal_Museum…>
to Wikimedia Commons. This donation consists of photos of objects from the
museum's collection, and of photos taken during Dutch scientific and
military expeditions in Suriname and the Dutch East Indies.

Hi Yaroslav,
Thank you for the interest in the project!
The whole project takes 100 days for 100 masterpieces.
As now the subject is hot around this topic I will start reaching out to
museums in this week and/or next week, first with museums with PD materials.
If it is possible to show the museums that they get more and more articles
written on Wikipedia about them, the more existing they hopefully will be.
As you may have noticed, it is going ad-hoc, which is the result of the
missing collaboration of the core organising organisation.
The first step is now getting the museums in Wikipedia. When the museums
start to provide us images, we also will look to which masterpieces are
notable to add as own article in Wikipedia.
Greetings,
Romaine

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Museums of 100 masterpieces from Brussels
To: Wikimedia <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello all,
In the past week the council of museums in Brussels started the project of
100 masterpieces in Brussels. Based on their list we have checked which
museums have an article in Wikipedia and which not.
On the Dutch Wikipedia we miss only one article at the moment, and someone
started writing it.
On the French Wikipedia we miss only 6 articles of the 40 museums with
masterpieces:
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Le_Bistro/25_mai_2016#100_chef…
On the English Wikipedia we miss 18 articles of the 40 museums with
masterpieces:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Romaine/100_masterpieces_from_Brussels
We now try to get at least in these three languages an article about these
museums with masterpieces from Brussels.
An article in other languages are welcome as well.
The next step will be talking to the museums to show our interest in them
and we hope they want to donate images for usage in these and other
articles.
Thanks!
Romaine

There is so much good content on Wikimedia that it's difficult to choose
what to highlight, and I try to be mindful of my number of posts to email
lists. I feel that this is worth a special mention because it's beautiful
and unusual. Courtesy of User:La Pianista, we have good quality recordings
of classical piano works:
https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiradio/index.php?channel=La_Pianista
I particularly recommend her performance of Chopin's Scherzo No. 3:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chopin_-_Scherzo_No._3_%28re-recorded%…
<javascript:void(0)>. Quote (admittedly opinionated!) from
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scherzo_No._3_%28Chopin%29
<javascript:void(0)>: "The Scherzo No. 3, Op. 39, in C-sharp minor by
Frédéric Chopin, completed in 1839, was written in the abandoned monastery
of Valldemossa on the Balearic island of Majorca, Spain. This is the most
terse, ironic, and tightly constructed of the four scherzos, with an almost
Beethovenian grandeur."

Hope you enjoy,
Pine
Hi all!
The first period of image upload from Wiki Loves Folk contest has ended (the
second period will be between November and December). A total of 25
contributors have uploaded 1150 pictures (
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Folk_201…)
It´s the first occasion being celebrated, and considering it a subject that
arouses a priori less interest than the monuments and natural areas, we
think it is a positive quantity.
About the contest, folk itself involves involves many different
subjects: traditional
costumes, music, dance, crafts, festivals ... In this first edition we
focus on festivals but facing other years and other countries we could
focus on any of these subjects.

Hello all,
Just to say that I'm in the Highlands of Scotland at the moment working with a small museum (who hold a recognised collection of national significance to Scotland) in my capacity as Wikimedian in Residence at Museums Galleries Scotland. Managed a couple of small but significant uploads to Commons yesterday using the tool - couple of bumps along the way but both myself and the curator really excited to have this resource. I'll share the pix once we're finished.. (A wee description of what each field should/could contain would be a big help, I think.)
Huge thanks to all involved with this. I can see massive potential for many of the organisations I've worked with over the last 16 months.

Subject: [GLAM] Pattypan - upload files to Commons the Excel way :-)
Reply-To: "Wikimedia & GLAM collaboration \[Public\]" <glam(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi All!
A new open-source upload tool, intended for all, but especially small-to-medium GLAMs and their volunteers, is now available for use. Here it is: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Pattypan
The program is a desktop Java application that generates an .xls file to be filled in with file descriptions, based on extensive choice of file description fields, and supporting wikicode in any field.
The application was written by Yarl - author of Vicuna uploader. We would like to hear opinions and requests: Yarl is still working on the uploader so modifications and improvements will be added :-)
The download page on Github: https://github.com/yarl/pattypan/releases
Quick instructions: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Pattypan/Simple_manual (will be expanded)
The program is very new but we hope you might find it useful and interesting. Please share!
Thanks :-)
Marta

Hi All!
We've submitted a proposal for the Carpathian Ethnography Project,
organised by Wikimedia Polska and the National Museum of Ethnography in
Warsaw (the project includes several other participating museums):
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:WMPL/Ethnography_of_the_Carpathians
In short: Teams consisting of Wikipedians, scientists and volunteers
identify blank areas on Wikipedia, gather reference material, then conduct
6 Wiki-excursions to key locations in the Carpathian region (Poland,
Southwest Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania), to photograph,
record and film traditional folk dress and folk artwork (sculpture, artisan
objects, cultural artifacts) uniquely representative for traditional
Carpathian culture. A set of several dozen articles in 6 languages will
then be written and illustrated by this material.
We're still looking for a few more participants from 5 Central European
countries - especially from Romania - as well as anyone interested in
collaborating remotely!
We're also looking for all comments, opinion, endorsement and support :-)
Let us know, we'll be happy to answer all questions.
Thanks!
Marta Malina
