Hi all,
I think I lost the thread on this one but picking back up...
I am unable to attend midwinter so not really able to plan for something there. And, as folks who attend midwinter know, this is a more "business" focussed meeting than ALA annual. In any case, my colleagues at the OCLC booth would love to hand out stickers to folks who self identify as having done a citation. We could even do something fun like snap a photo of people with their stickers and post to social media (the OCLC Twitter account has a fair amount of followers).
Is it possible to get a #1Lib1Ref sticker (I know Roy handed out something last year but I don't recall what it was)? Or just a pile of the globe stickers? I can help coordinate this from afar...
Best,
Merrilee

Hi,
ALA Mid-winter in Atlanta happens during this time period: January 20-24. Do we want to organize something at a local library, at the convention, or someplace else.
Would OCLC or one of the interest groups be willing to sponsor an edit-a-thon?
I am going to post this to the FB group too.

Hello Wikimedians!
We are excited to finally start coordinating among #1lib1ref organizers this month.
If you haven’t yet, we invite you to read the lessons that we learned from last year’s great campaign:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Lessons<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__meta.wikimedia.org_wik…>
As with last year, we hope to launch #1lib1ref on Wikipedia’s 16th birthday in January, asking librarians to “Give a birthday present to Wikipedia, by adding a reference”.
What’s new?
Last year we got a lot of feedback from librarians that they would have planned more activities if “they just had a bit more warning and time” so we are extending the campaign from eight days to 19 days, from January 15 through February 3.
We hope this does two things: a) it allows for several waves of communications and people adopting the campaign for local events and b) fits better with the start of the Spring Term at many universities in the Northern Hemisphere, where librarians are in demand for various activities.
We also noticed last year a lot of social media about informal gatherings: librarians wanted to learn about Wikipedia socially at physical events. We think this is a great opportunity, so the Wikipedia Library team is developing a coffee hour kit that provides enough material to help librarians coordinate a small gathering, where they can talk about Wikipedia with their peers and add their one reference.
The kit is going to include: a) recommendations for planning, b) a series of discussion questions, c) easy suggested activities, and d) a flyer template for promoting the event locally. If you would like to help build the kit, or a new 1lib1ref logo, let us know.
How you can help
We hope the campaign offers a platform for engaging librarians in your region and context to learn more about Wikimedia projects. We know librarians use Wikipedia for a variety of purposes, but the campaign’s story--specifically how our references work--becomes a shared foundation for understanding and entering our community. If you would like to coordinate #1lib1ref in your area, here are the main steps:
1.
Join the Wikipedia + Libraries Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/wikilibrary<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.facebook.com_group…>
2.

3.
Review Citation Hunt -- a volunteer-developed tool that allows for randomly being offered a citation. Check if your language is supported in the top right.

4.
Review Hashtag Tracking -- a way to track edits made through the edit summary field.

1.
Translate the campaign page to your local language. We want to have it ready for translation no later than November 10th and will notify you with an email that it’s ready.
2.
Begin reaching out to partners that you think will want to participate during the campaign through a) communications or b) activities.
We look forward to collaborating with you! Thanks so much for your help--it should be a lot of fun.
Best,
Alex Stinson

Dear GLAMwiki community,
This is a quick 'for your information' announcement, on behalf of
Europeana, to say that a 2017 sequel to the 2015 European GLAMwiki
Coordinators meeting[1] is now confirmed.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2017_European_GLAMwiki_Coordinators_meeting
This two-day meeting will be hosted at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on
16 & 17 February (with a third day for practical training workshops hosted
by WM-France). The goal is to share skills and best practices, coordinate
projects, and consolidate connections between parts of our movement
involved in GLAM outreach.
As this a functionaries meeting, not an outreach conference, attendance
numbers are limited to those who have responsibility for coordinating GLAM
activities at a European Wikimedia affiliate organisation - staff, board or
designated volunteer. Nevertheless, as with 2015, both the advance-planning
and post-event documentation will be published on Meta as best as we can
make it.
If your Wikimedia affiliate has a GLAM coordinator and would like to
attend, please get in contact with any of us off list.
Sincerely,
Liam Wyatt (Europeana), John Cummings (WiR - UNESCO), & Rémy Gerbet
(WM-France)

Hi all,
Every year on the first of January it is Public Domain Day
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Domain_Day> on what thousands of
works of authors that died 70 years ago enter the public domain. This
results in the restoration of many works on Wikimedia Commons, but this
slowly moves larger.
Besides the works that are restored on Wikimedia Commons, we actively ask
cultural institutions to look for works of artworks that died 70 years ago
(in most countries) and to upload images of those works (on/after 1
January) on Wikimedia Commons.
This year it concerns the works of authors who died in 1946.
(Of course it is also welcome to have them upload works from authors who
died in earlier years, but that is not the focus.)
As this is an event and/or new activity, this also can be interesting for
GLAMs as they get more attention for those works on Wikipedia, but also in
the press!
It would be great if we as Wikimedia movement could ask museums if they
have works of authors who died 70 years ago, s they can release them in the
public domain.
An incomplete list of authors that died in 1946 can be found at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_in_public_domain
If you are taking this up in your country/area, please let me know so I can
collect all results.
Thanks!
Romaine
Hi everyone,
In November 2016, the Temminck Groll Collection of the Dutch Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Temminck_Groll_Collection>, consisting of 2,641 historical photographs, was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. I did the upload, using Pattypan <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Pattypan>. I can recommend this tool very warmly.
It’s a collection of photos of historical buildings and heritage in the following countries/regions:
- French Antilles
- French Guyana
- Ghana
- Guyana
- India
- Indonesia
- Malaysia
- Dutch Antilles
- Sri Lanka
- Suriname
- South Africa
These are all regions with which the Dutch have historical relations. The Dutch architect and architectural historian Coen Temminck Groll <https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coen_Temminck_Groll> (1925-2015) shot these photos while travelling and studying 'shared cultural heritage' (heritage of the Netherlands located outside the country’s borders). These travels mainly took place in the 1960s and 1970s.
Temminck Groll worked on the subject of the shared cultural heritage of the Netherlands his entire life, and has widely published about it.
The collection is made available to Wikimedia Commons in the context of the project The Netherlands and the world <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Nederland/The_Netherlands_and_the…>.
All help is welcome in adding these images to Wikipedia articles, Wikidata items, monument lists and more!
Many greetings, Sandra
