Hello Wikimedians!
We are excited to finally start coordinating among #1lib1ref organizers
this month.
If you haven’t yet, we invite you to read the lessons that we learned from
last year’s great campaign:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Lessons
As with last year, we hope to launch #1lib1ref on Wikipedia’s 16th birthday
in January, asking librarians to “Give a birthday present to Wikipedia, by
adding a reference”.
What’s new?
Last year we got a lot of feedback from librarians that they would have
planned more activities if “they just had a bit more warning and time” so
we are extending the campaign from eight days to 19 days, from January 15
through February 3.
We hope this does two things: a) it allows for several waves of
communications and people adopting the campaign for local events and b)
fits better with the start of the Spring Term at many universities in the
Northern Hemisphere, where librarians are in demand for various activities.
We also noticed last year a lot of social media about informal gatherings:
librarians wanted to learn about Wikipedia socially at physical events. We
think this is a great opportunity, so the Wikipedia Library team is
developing a coffee hour kit that provides enough material to help
librarians coordinate a small gathering, where they can talk about
Wikipedia with their peers and add their one reference.
The kit is going to include: a) recommendations for planning, b) a series
of discussion questions, c) easy suggested activities, and d) a flyer
template for promoting the event locally. If you would like to help build
the kit, or a new 1lib1ref logo, let us know.
How you can help
We hope the campaign offers a platform for engaging librarians in your
region and context to learn more about Wikimedia projects. We know
librarians use Wikipedia for a variety of purposes, but the campaign’s
story--specifically how our references work--becomes a shared foundation
for understanding and entering our community. If you would like to
coordinate #1lib1ref in your area, here are the main steps:
1.
Join the Wikipedia + Libraries Facebook group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/wikilibrary
2.
Fill out this survey:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSflWCp9QkNbIZWXCWU02bp_FGCAua4Z6Ua…
3.
Review Citation Hunt -- a volunteer-developed tool that allows for
randomly being offered a citation. Check if your language is supported in
the top right.
1.
URL: https://tools.wmflabs.org/citationhunt/
2.
Report Bugs or request features or language support:
https://github.com/eggpi/citationhunt/issues
4.
Review Hashtag Tracking -- a way to track edits made through the edit
summary field.
-
URL: https://tools.wmflabs.org/hashtags
-
Report bugs or request features or language support:
https://github.com/hatnote/hashtags/issues/new
1.
Translate the campaign page to your local language. We want to have it
ready for translation no later than November 10th and will notify you with
an email that it’s ready.
2.
Begin reaching out to partners that you think will want to participate
during the campaign through a) communications or b) activities.
We look forward to collaborating with you! Thanks so much for your
help--it should be a lot of fun.
Best,
Alex Stinson

Subject: [Wikitech-l] Future of magic links / making ISBN linking easier
To: "Wikimedia developers" <wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Cc:
Hi,
In the RfC meeting for the Future of magic links RfC, it was agreed upon
to disable magic links for the MW 1.28 release by default and begin the
deprecation for Wikimedia sites. One of the subpoints was to provide
migration tools and similar functionality. For RFC and PMID links, they
were added to the default core interwiki map, and the Wikimedia one. But
for ISBN, it points to the local wiki, so an interwiki link doesn't make
sense.
The two main proposals are:
Virtual namespace ([[ISBN:0-7475-3269-9]]), which is similar to existing
link syntax (double brackets), but is also a bit magical since there
haven't been any new virtual namespaces since Special and Media in the
initial version of MW.
Parser function ({{#isbn:0-7475-3269-9}}), which is typically how new
syntax/functions are added, but is farther away from traditional link
syntax.
I would appreciate comments on
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T148274> - I've written a patch for
the virtual namespace as a POC, but writing one for the parser function
if people prefer that, should be trivial.

Hi GLAM-Wiki Folks,
With the cooperation of IFLA, we have been working on white papers. We have
prepared the below email to forward to library communities in your context
to solicit feedback on the draft white papers. Please share with your
partners and community coordinators.
Also if you are on social media, we would welcome sharing of the following:

Hello all,
As you probably have noticed, in the last few years more and more library
communities are engaging with Wikipedia as a tool for teaching our patrons
effective internet research, but also as contributors of Wikimedia
projects, through projects like Art and Feminism
<http://art.plusfeminism.org/>and the #1lib1ref campaign
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref>.
But these kinds of collaborations, only scratch the surface -- whole
networks of libraries are integrating Wikipedia into their professional
work of sharing knowledge, and using it as a tool for serving their
patrons. Take for example the public libraries in Catalonia: nearly 200
libraries are actively contributing to Wikimedia projects, as an effort to
preserve Catalan language and culture.
Since early 2016, IFLA Headquarters and the Wikipedia Library Team at the
Wikimedia Foundation, have been supporting a group of Wikipedians and
Library experts in writing two white papers on the opportunities for
library and Wikipedia collaboration. Initial drafts of these papers were
presented at the WLIC 2016, and were well received.
We hope to continue to refine these papers, and we need your help to do it:
though the committees that wrote the papers include leading experts on
these collaboration, we know that their are hundreds of leaders in library
and Wikipedia communities who also have valuable experience with these
important partnerships. We hope to revise the current drafts to fully
reflect the global experience of Wikipedia and Library collaborators.
To this end, we invite you to join our open commenting period on the white
papers, that just opened on September 19 and will remain open through
October 31st. Instructions for commenting, are available in the following

Hi all,
As you may know, since 2014 Creative Commons has published an annual State
of the Commons Report *[1]* that tracks the growth of CC-licensed works on
the Commons.
The report has a double focus:
- Quantitative. Report on growth of CC-licensed content for year-over year
comparisons.
- Qualitative. They want to focus on short, digestible impact stories tied
to real creators around the world, in order to surface vibrance and
usability of the commons and its contributors.
I thought this was a great opportunity for Wikimedians in the GLAM-wiki
realm to share your stories and shine =)
The deadline for this call is October 31. Please find more information in
the link here: https://creativecommons.org/2016/10/04/2016-state-
commons-call-submissions/
... and let me know if you are inspired to contribute!
