Perhaps this shows that some kind of commons bot that links or loads the images to flickr might be of benefit to commons traffic as well. Most people dont know what commons is and it certainly doesnt havevthe same footprint on googlevsearches as wikipedia or flickr.

It will be interesting to see if anyone has some answers on how bots
might bias the numbers, though the same can be asked of Commons
statistics. :-)
I do see a fair few people favouriting and commenting on the images.
Checking the last hour, 22 images have been favourited by 3 different
users, so the proportion of passive viewers vs. active users is not
unreasonable.

In the past week I have been quietly running an experiment by having a
small program 'mirror' the lovely LACMA collection and a collection of
British cartoons (Library of Congress) from Wikimedia Commons to
Flickr.[1] So far I have uploaded 10,000 images on to my
Flickrstream.[2]
Here's the weird part, I am getting very large numbers of views on
Flickr. This could be the "newness" of the images, however the numbers
have surprised me. For example since uploading an 18th C. engraving of
"The harlots nurse" to Flickr 3 days ago, the picture has already had
500 views by the public. In comparison, when I uploaded the image to
Commons, it had 10 views in the first 30 days and it has had 1 view in
the last month.[3]
If the level of public impact can be a magnitude higher by releasing
on Flickr, this seems a worthwhile and relatively easy thing to
consider including in the plan for any batch upload to Commons and in
the long term it may encourage Flickr image reusers to visit Commons
as their source due to our clear public domain licencing. As my Flickr
images use the identical text to their Commons partners, and give
handy links back to Commons, this approach seems a win-win, especially
considering how we have developed user friendly tools to mirror
collections in the opposite direction.
Does anyone have reports that compare the impact of having the same
collection on Flickr and Commons?

I often think we need a reverse FIST, i.e. a tool to produce suggestions
of usage for files in a category. Didn't we have something like that at
some point? https://tools.wmflabs.org/fist/fist.php

Many users and readers might be unaware of the great improvements to
the standard Commons search.
As an example, if you type "Dentistry
incategory:Files_from_Wellcome_Images" in the search bar, this returns
a list of 267 thumbnail images of where "Dentistry" appears in the
file name or as text on the image page.[1] If we use
insource:/dentist/ this includes dentist, dentistry, dentiste, etc.
which then reports back 359 possible images.[2]
There are a number of other possible search options beyond searching
within a category, including searching by similar words or fuzzy
matches or limiting to words in the title.[3] It is definitely worth
spending a couple of minutes reading up on the special CirrusSearch
options and having a good play around with it, if you have not tried
it before.

Indeed CirrusSearch is very useful if you have a keyword in mind. What I
need is a tool which suggests me a keyword, i.e. an article currently
lacking images which matches an image in the category.
We can currently do only the opposite, i.e. start from articles without
images and look for an image in the entire Commons.

http://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/01/20/wellcome-library-donation/
Hi GLAMmers,
The target of uploading 100,000 high resolution historical images from
the Wellcome Library to Wikimedia Commons was hit last month and there
is a Foundation blog post telling the story of out today. See the
above link.
It is a great collection to illustrate not just medical history, but
ancient history, British cartoons, Chinese history, religions and many
others. In terms of quality and range, it is one of the most
prestigious collections of high quality scanned drawings, painting and
photographs on Wikimedia Commons. As a case study for other GLAMs, the
interesting news is that the project costs were almost *zero* as the
upload of 300 GB of images ran from my home laptop from a USB hard
disk that the Wellcome Library kindly posted to me. :-)
I have pinned a suggested tweet at http://twitter.com/Faewik, and
there are share buttons at the bottom of the blog post too if you wish
to help promote the free collection on twitter or Facebook.
Cheers,
Fae

Hello all,
Hereby I like to announce the project Wiki Loves Art in Belgium.
In November we had a meeting with a museum and we noticed that they were
very enthusiastic about Wikipedia/Wikimedia, but they experienced it as
difficult and maybe dangerous to open up their collection. This relatively
closed attitude appears to be not unique, but often occurring among Belgian
cultural institutions, compared with other countries, as we understood from
various organisations in the open knowledge sector.
Therefore we have thought about how to work together with cultural
institutions and we came up with Wiki Loves Art. This project has been
organised earlier in various countries, and in 2009 also in the
Netherlands. A Dutch team is currently working on organising Wiki Loves Art
in 2016 again, and that gave us the inspiration to start with the
organisation in Belgium as well.
Wiki Loves Art is a photo contest in what participants visit the museums,
galleries, archives and libraries which have determined a part of their
collection to be photographed and published under a free license. Wiki
Loves Art gives participating photographers often a unique possibility to
take photos in a cultural institution and/or to visit an organisation
behind the scenes. This has resulted in other Wiki Loves Art projects in
many photos that are widely used on various Wikipedias. For cultural
institutions this project gives the opportunity to collaborate with
Wikipedia/Wikimedia in a save way, without having opening the doors of
their entire collections, and show a part of their collection with
relatively little costs.
In an organisational point of view the project is intended to make the
Belgiumgap less wide and the availability will increase the coverage of
Belgian art on Wikipedia. In comparison with other countries, relatively
less articles have been written about subjects in Belgium in the various
language versions of Wikipedia. This project tries to stimulate to fill
this gap and that Belgian art and more is better visible and described on
Wikipedia.
Wiki Loves Art is a project under the flag of Wikimedia Belgium, but is a
joint project in what we work together with several organisations with a
long-term expertise in working with cultural institutions and/or open
knowledge projects. Together with them we had last week a meeting and
agreed on how we want to organise Wiki Loves Art in Belgium.
We need to start in time as the project is very labour intensive with much
time spend on communication with the various cultural institutions. The
Dutch team has therefore highly recommended to hire someone for one or two
days a week during the project to be able to manage all the communication
and organisational needs. We are also going to set up a website, print
flyers and leaflets, and after the contest we organise a jury to judge the
photos and organise a prize giving ceremony.
Therefore we created a grant request at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/WM_BE/Wiki_Loves_Art_2016
If there are any suggestions or feedback, please let us know.
The project will be brought in at the General Assembly coming Saturday.
If you are interested in volunteering as part of the organisational team,
let us know!
The project page can be found at
https://be.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Art_2016
Kind regards,
Romaine

Dear Wikimedians,
please find here an information about one of the outcomes of the Wikipedian in Residence experience at the Swiss National Library, a Wikimedia CH initiative.

IT:
Oltre 1000 Schweizer Kleinmeister on-line
